Nice old-fashioned exterior, but inside it has had all the character destroyed by a predictable modern clone-pub identikit refurbishment.

Considering that the pub is geared much more towards eating than drinking, the food was very disappointing - soggy, tasteless battered cod and chips.

Popped back for a drink but the staff started cleaning before closing time - the smell of cleaning chemicals hardly enhanced the drinking experience.

Not sure why anyone would really enjoy this pub.

Surprised at a 4/10 rating - athough they are from 2007.

The Shjp has had a smart refurb in Feb 09 and a slight refresh on menu in a generic chef and brewer pub style (nothng bad but a known quantity). Pub has a more modern feel and still serves up reasonably priced pub grub.

Tend to always get a seat as it is quite large and there is usually a selection of 3 real ales to pick from - recent ones have been from breweries including brains, adnams and wells.

Would recommend as a nice, reliable and quality place for food and beer.

Don't get the fake pub in a box comment as the building dates from 1597 .....which surely qualifies as "the genuine article" ?

It's great fun to stand at the bar rather than sit at a table ....you get asked at least 100 times/hour if you want a beer !

Beerdrinkers of the UK unite and stand at the bar don't sit !!!

Really not that bad when compared to the local Gastly-Pub -sorry should be Gastro-Pub ....probaly gastro enteritis though...The Mason's Arms about 1/2 a mile away.....although The Ship is attached to a bizzare Lego built Travel Lodge at least you do get served and the food is edible unlike The Masons which can best be described as "pretentious but chav at the same time" !!!

Therefore a good rating !
