127, Herne Hill

Lovely late evening bolt-hole, just opposite the park in Herne Hill. It's run by a really nice local fella called Joseph. He always makes you feel welcome with his rum punch!

The Prince Regent, Herne Hill

I have visited this pub a couple of times as I live in the area. It has a very nice vibe and is well-located and handy, just opposite Brockwell park.
They offer a good selection of drinks however I would agree that the prices are quite high, compared to other pubs in the vicinity.

I ate at the Prince Regent once with my partner and we thought that the pint of prawns was a novel idea, so decided to give it a go. We were however, not prepared for what we got - a pint glass, full of unpeeled prawns and worse, all the egg sacks were still attached to the underbelly of the prawns. Yuk.
We spent more time peeling the damn prawns and getting really messy, rather than actually eating. I've peeled prawns in other restaurants and it's never been much of a problem, but here, it was really unpleasant. Maybe the prawns were cheap and that's why they were so horrid?
I'd suggest to the management to either bin the idea of prawns in a pint glass or get yourselves a better supply.
The rest of the food was good though so don't be put off!

Number 22, Herne Hill

Lovely little place with a good selection of food and wines. The only downside is that it's slightly overpriced, but would definitely recommend to anyone fancying an intimate evening or celebrating a special occasion.

Escape Bar and Art, Herne Hill

The Escape has a good selection of tapas-style snacks and pizzas and is generally a good place to go during the day, especially if you're keen to take advantage of the free wi-fi access.

However, evenings tend to be a completely different affair. In the past year, the place seems to have been hijacked by a load of priviliged Herne Hillian teenagers, who seem to use the place for drunken youth club style outings. It used to be full of nice local people and the vibe was always friendly and inclusive, so it's a shame that the place has gone down hill.
A little hint to to the owners - c'mon guys, get it sorted. Revamp the place, get out and promote the place to Herne Hill residents, but more importantly, get checking for ID and keep the teenage brats out.

It's time to take the Escape back to how good it was about 2 years ago. I, for one, will be the first back!

The Commercial, Herne Hill

My local pub. Great for meeting up with friends in a relaxed and un-poncey atmosphere. Good selection of Euopean beers and the food aint half bad either. Would definitely recommend.

The Rose Revived, Hadlow

We ventured to the Rose Revisited, a well-located countryside pub just off the main road into Hadlow, on a sunny bank holiday in May.
The exterior is very welcoming, with a lovely children's play area located in a beautiful beer garden, the interior is tastefully decorated in true "gastro pub" style and the place has quite a welcoming vibe. We therefore thought it worth a visit, so ventured in and placed our order of two main meals of steak and a steak burger.
As it was a busy day, we were forgiving on having to wait a while to place our order at the bar, however, we did not expect on having to wait nearly an hour for our food to arrive. Worse still, seeing people who were behind us at the bar having their food delivered to their table before us, was not the nicest of experiences.
After 40 minutes patiently waiting at our table, my partner politely enquired as to what was happening with our order. The waitress was very sorry and reassured that our food was coming in two minutes.
A further 15 minutes later, my partner asked the Manager and was reassured once again that our food would be arriving imminently. Again, another 10 minutes passed without any sign of food. By this stage we were hungry and starting to get annoyed.
I spoke to the manager for the second time, and told him that this was unacceptable and not what people expect when dining out in a restaurant. Although he was apologetic, I got the impression that he was making a lot of excuses (i.e it was busy) rather than apologising and sorting it out and assuming responsibility for the mess, as the manager. To be blunt, the manger was very young, completely inexperienced and over his head to be running such a busy pub in such a prime location on a Bank Holiday weekend.
When the food finally arrived, both meals were lukewarm and were returned immediately to the Manager.
Needless to say, we did not stay a moment longer and took our custom elsewhere. I would not recommend this place to anyone expecting decent food and service. Very poor show from what could be a place with amazing potential.
