The Three Tuns, Reading

Decent pub. Please ignore the latest four reviews, all posted by Jason, the manager of the Back Of Beyond, who seems to have taken it upon himself to try to increase his own very poor pub's takings by denigrating all other local pubs on multiple sites across the web.

I've always found this pub most accommodating. A decent mix of people, friendly bar staff, reasonable prices (for Reading), and a well-looked after place. You won't go too far wrong here.

Must add, I have no connection to current of previous owners, I'm just a punter who's been going to the Three Tuns on and off for the past 10 years. That I still go is a measure of the place.

The Back of Beyond, Reading

Could be a decent pub, were it not the rude, sweaty, balding, fat, ignorant manager and his utter lack of both people skills and staff management. I've seen him berate his staff in front of customers, I've seen him sweat into a beer he was pulling for me, and frankly I'm astonished that he's allowed to continue in a role he's so clearly incapable of mastering even the basic functions. On top of which, he continues to create multiple usernames on this and many other sites both to berate the opposition, and provide fake good reviews of his own pub.

Avoid.

The Jolly Anglers, Reading

Lovely little pub - great selection of ales and ciders, lovely garden, good food.

The Upin Arms, Reading

So disappointed at the change in this pub.

Yes, the Upin Arms could be rowdy, and it wasn't the cleanest place in town, but it was always busy, there was often something going on, it was cheap, had a great jukebox, and two quizzers. I loved it, and used to go there a lot.

Not sure why the change, as there were always plenty of customers, and I would have thought the area far more suited to that style of pub than the current incarnation. If I want to drink overpriced Perroni, and pay a fiver for some olives and foccacia, I'll go into town, thanks.

The Travellers Rest, Caversham

I popped in here over the weekend, as I'm trying to visit all the Reading pubs I haven't yet been to at least once.

Not good I'm afraid. As someone else has said, it's one of those soulless large spaces that somehow fails to feel anything like a pub. Bar staff were chatting at the end of the bar despite three customers waiting, eventually with a sigh sidled over. Tsk - pesky customers. Still, got it ticked off the list.
