The Ackhorne, York

An oasis of calm, especially on Saturday night when the rest of the bars in the area are truly awful. The landlady seems to have a way of dealing with noisy types which means that they never get out of hand. Totally recommended.

The York Arms, York

It has gone from worse to even worse. The new landlady has allowed all the previously barred people back in with the result that there are frequent fights and loud arguments flying back and forth laced with four letter words. Tourists and families with children should not venture in, the atmosphere is so bad, especially on Saturday nights.

Coopers, York

I used to be a regular here but I gave it up when the York Tap opened next door. The Coopers bar staff are normally students are very pleasant and the place has been refurbished so it can no longer be called "dirty" but as another poster said its days are surely numbered, at least as a bar. Since the Tap does not do food, Coopers would be better as a restaurant.Beers are still hideously overpriced and they no longer accept their own "loyalty card"!

The Junction, York

This pub has now closed, possibly for good, and the micro brewery has moved.

The Little John Inn, York

This bar is now reopened as The Blue Boar and has been completely refurbished as an Olde Worlde/contemporary pub - mainly dark wood and pastel colours. They do food and appeared to doing good business on my visit but the drinks are overpriced and I will not be a regular.PS if the management read this TURN THE HEATING ON! I don't expect to have to wear my gloves and button my coat up in a pub.

The York Arms, York

This pub has gone very much downhill over the last year due to the management being replaced with increasing frequency by Sam Smiths. Every time a new landlord moves in, the large number of barred people come back and have to be thrown out again usually after excessive noise, violence etc. I would advise tourists or families with children to avoid it.

The York Arms, York

This pub has recently been taken over by a young new management but retains it's ambience. It IS a "gay friendly" bar - mostly men and middle aged with few queens so you wouldn't necessarily notice it.Like most Sam Smiths pubs the beer is cheap (1.94 a pint for Alpine at the moment) and thankfully there's no TV or jukebox.
Well worth a visit.
