The Pineapple, Brimpton Common

Interesting old pub with lots of character and friendly atmosphere. Food looks very nice, although I haven't tried it yet, and the beer is well kept.

Saltgrass, Sunderland

Definitely worth going out of your way to find. The Saltgrass is an excellent pub with well-kept real ales, a cosy welcoming atmosphere and very good food.

The Norfolk Arms, Roffey

Not a bad pub I suppose. Reasonably well-kept Hall and Woodhouse ales are a plus point, although it is rather smokey and lacking in atmosphere. Much better than The Star at Roffey Shops, however.

Bar Vin, Horsham

Absolutely awful place. Full of smoke and orange-faced chavs; wait ages for a pint of over-priced rubbish lager (although I did once spy a real ale on offer here a while back); and take in the (lack of) atmosphere. Bar Vin must surely be the reason why the residents of Horsham go to London or Brighton for a night out?

Ye Old Stout House, Horsham

Not a bad pub at all this one. Decent real ales and a bit of peace and quiet in which to enjoy your drink - a rarity in Horsham.

B52's Bar, Horsham

The patio bit out the front is OK in the summer, but this is a rather poor pub on the whole.

Sweeney and Todd, Reading

Superb selection of pies and some well-kept cask ales on offer, too. Lots of cosy corners to sit in and have a chat, and no loud music to spoil the atmosphere.

The Woolpack Inn, Boot

The bar is stripped down and very basic, but none the worse for it. Friendly service and an excellent selction of well-kept cask ales. Lovely beer garden at the front.

The Bower House Inn, Eskdale Green

Friendly, cosy little pub with a good range of cask ales, excellent food and a beautiful beer garden.

The Strands Hotel, Nether Wasdale

The Strands has recently been taken over by a new management team, and an exceptionally friendly bunch they are, too. We called in here a few weeks ago, and were very impressed by the warm welcome, the well-kept cask ales and the food is very very good and well priced.

The Screes Inn, Nether Wasdale

Very good pub. Good selection of well kept real ales and lots of character and charm. The food is also very good, and the B&B accommodation very frendly and pleasant.

The Sun Hotel, Coniston

Some excellent Cumbrian ales on offer here. Cosy, characterful bar; attractrive restaurant; and a lovely beer garden with splendid views.

The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston

Have to disagree with the comments regarding food. We had fish and chips in here a few weeks ago and they were very well presented and beautifully fresh - decent sized portions, too.

There is a full range of the excellent Coniston ales, and sitting outside the front of the pub watching the world go by is a pleasure (does get rather busy though).

Bank Tavern, Keswick

Pleasant pub with a full range of Jennings ales. It also has a small patio area to the rear, and serves good pub grub.

13 Jul 2006 17:42

Dog and Gun, Keswick

Excellent pub this one. Good selection of cask ales, generous portions of food and friendly staff.

13 Jul 2006 17:41

Crown Posada, Newcastle

Excellent pub with a wonderful interior, friendly barman and usually 6 well-kept cask ales from local breweries.

The White Horse, Oxford

Great little pub with much character and charm. Beer is usually pretty good and there are a few choice malts as well.

The Rose and Crown PH, Oxford

Wonderfully eccentric; academics, undergraduates, locals and tourists rub shoulders in this atmospheric little pub. Usually three well-kept cask ales on tap, excellent pub grub (take note of the Sausage Indicator!), pleasant beer garden at the rear, pickled eggs, pint glasses with handles, pistachios by the pint...just how a pub should be. Landlord is a friendly fellow too, as are the staff.

The Gardeners Arms, Oxford

Lovely little pub with a friendly atmosphere and good cask ales. Set in one of Oxford's most picturesque streets, and popular with locals and students alike.

The Wharf House, Oxford

An absolute gem of a pub, and well worth a visit. This pub is designed for drinking beer, with no frivolous extras; I love it. Used to get in here regularly when I lived nearby and still like to pop in when I'm passing. Eccentric locals, enthusiastic landlord who knows his beer, (literally) barking dog...it's definitely an experience!

The Wharf House is the only original 1820s building still standing in this part of Oxford; the rest were demolished to make way for the soulless flats and BT building that now occupy the area. Formerly one of Oxford's slum area; the urban myth (may or may not be true) is that Karl Marx visited St Ebbe's when researching Das Kapital...he would have enjoyed popping in to the Wharf House for a pint certainly.

Jude The Obscure, Oxford

Not a bad pub at all this. I like the Thomas Hardy-inspired name ;-)

Decent beer, friendly and relaxed atmosphere and a pleasant patio to the rear.

28 Apr 2006 19:09

The Rickety Press, Oxford

Cheap pub grub, good selection of cask ales and a good mix of students and locals. Definitely worth a visit.

28 Apr 2006 19:07

Duke Of York, St Ebbes

I used to get in here quite a bit when I lived nearby; clientele mainly locals with a few students here and there; reasonably priced food and decent cask ales. Shame it's so isolated at the back of the Westgate Centre, really.

28 Apr 2006 19:05

The Old School, Oxford

Lovely place to sit and enjoy a quiet afternoon or early evening pint (Greene King - cask ales not too bad); very busy and not terribly appealing at nigh, though

28 Apr 2006 19:03

The Angel and Greyhound, Oxford

Lovely pub, worth a brisk stroll over Magdalen Bridge to get to. Excellent selection of cask and bottled Young's beers. Wood panelling throughout, bar games and a small patio garden to the rear.

28 Apr 2006 19:01

The Bear, Oxford

Superb little pub; many visitors to Oxford seem to miss this one, but it's worth searching for!

Usually three cask ales (usually well kept), impossibly sloping floor, impossibly low ceilings and tremendous charm. Eccentric collection of ties, too.

28 Apr 2006 18:58

Talkhouse, Stanton St John

Very good food and very well kept cask ales; Hook Norton beers are usually served. Friendly staff from Oz and a pleasant ambience.

28 Apr 2006 18:54

The Alehouse, Reading

Probably my favourite pub in Reading; certainly the town's best selection of cask ales, and a friendly atmosphere too.

7 Mar 2006 18:46

The Horse and Groom, Mortimer

Disagree with the comments about the landlord being rude - we get in The Horse and Groom regularly, and find him to be a pleasant fellow who knows his beer and food, and who chats to the customers whether they are regulars or otherwise.

The refurbishment may not be to everyone's taste, but the previous incarnation of this pub was dire so it's a definite improvement. It is now a very pleasant setting for a meal (excellent food) and a pint (constantly changing selection of cask ales). Good pub quiz on Thursday nights.
