The Maidens, Reading

Closed down and now a Sainsbury Local.

Great result there!

Seven Red Roses, Lower Earley

Why do you have a picture of the wrong pub?

The Chequers, Woodley

Make sure you cross the road to walk by this total dump and its chavy clientele!

Bull & Chequers, Woodley

This is no longer the Sixth Form Common Room for the local comprehensive school, thank goodness.

Instead it has become the territory of White Van Man whose clans congregate around the bar and refuse to let anyone not in their clique room to buy a drink.

Shame! Could be a nice pub if the management eased out the rabble and encouraged more mature customers in to the place.

Wheelwright Arms, St Nicholas Hurst

Went there for Sunday lunch recently. A lovely pub, shame the management don't make more of it.

Nice ales but very expensive, ditto soft drinks.

The major disappointment was the poor quality of the roasts chosen. Reminded me of industrial catering provided in large company canteens.

Won't be going back.

Jury still out!

The George, Earley

What does it take to satisfy the residents of Woodley, Earley and Lower Earley? I'm with "PitytheFool". An excellent pub; lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, great food, and fine wines and ales. The only much-desired improvement will come this summer when The Great Pollutants (smokers) are banished to the car park. I can't wait!

See you at the weeked!

Ye Olde Leathern Bottle, Wokingham

The usual watering hole for a late Sunday lunch is The George, just down the road in Woodley. Today, though, The George was heaving and there was no sign of a table for a considerable time.

So we wandered off in to Wokingham and decided that after 2+ years since our last critical visit, we should see how the Bottle has developed.

What a revelation!!!!!

The guy who greeted us at the door was warm, friendly and welcoming and went to lots of trouble consulting the chef to identify gluten-free items on the menu.

The service was excellent, and all the staff we came in to contact with were friendly and made us feel welcome.

The food was hot and tasty and arrived with a minimum of delay.

A thoroughly enjoyabe time and I have no doubt we shall be back.

Well done to all concerned.

The Catherine Wheel, Goring

Michael......

I worked through the comments about the Catherine Wheel and thought that maybe this is a place I should visit. Lots of recommendations and only about a 20 minute drive from home.

Then I read TKW's critique and your response.

Michael, you have to learn that the customer is always right, even when, especially when, he or she is wrong.

Clearly this lady was looking for a freebie, but in entering in to a slanging match with her you have sunk to her level.... a seriously bad move!!!!!

A quiet apology in private was all that was required but you have chosen to go public with your grievance and done yourself no good at all.

Instead of "a nice place to visit" I now find myself thinking "do I really want to visit a place run by a self-centred egotist who will brook no criticism"?

I won't be visiting until you learn some humility.

Your loss, Michael

The Crown Inn, Church Enstone

Went there yesterday (9/15) as part of a wedding party.

Lovely setting and decor, drinkable champagne, and a pleasant buffet. Sadly they were unable to cope with my request for gluten-free refreshment for my best squeeze; a serious shortcoming in this age of allergies and food intolerances.

Get it together at the Crown.

Plough, Wokingham

Great atmosphere, friendly staff, good ales and first-rate food.

And a great deck area outside kept cosy by the use of massive butane heaters.

My daughter's local which is child and dog-friendly (on the decking) so ideal for Grandpa to visit.

The Catherine Wheel, Henley-On-Thames

OK in that typical Wetherspoon's kind of way.

The food is plentiful, cheap and pretty ordinary, but then I suppose that could be said about all 600+ pubs in the group.

The beer is well kept, service is prompt and friendly. All in all a big improvement since the re-furb.

The Red Lion, Mortimer West End

This used to be my regular haunt many years ago, possibly even in another incarnation. This is going back to when the two gay boys, Peter and I can't remember the other guy's name ran the show.

It was excellent then way back in the 80's.

More recently, wearing my coach driver's hat I took a bunch of the locals to the races. What a lovely crowd of people.

Even more recently I had lunch there as part of four generations of my family; my little granddaughter, my two daughters and my father-in-law. The hospitality was first-class, the ale varied and excellent, and the food superb.

Last night I went again with my youngest daughter and her husband.

Again, as always, a great ambiance, a wonderful welcome, excellent food and warm, friendly and prompt service.

BUT........

pub management and chefs please note......

A key, nay vital, ingredient of Salade Nioise is anchovies, and "Sorry, sir, we've run out" is just not good enough.

You could have had a 9, but this omission and the excuse results in a lower score.

Ye Olde Leathern Bottle, Wokingham

Went Wednesday lunch - first rate, service food and beer. A clear 91/2 out of 10!

Went the follwoing Saturday evening - very disappointing! Waited 55 minutes for food which was completely indifferent (AND expensive). Clearly the staff do not know how to cope when it's busy.

Cider drinkers - it's fine you if you like draught Strongbow, otherwise forget it! That's all there is.

I felt strongly enough to write letters of complaint to both the licensee and Scottish and Newcastle Retail's Managing Director!
