The New Cross House, New Cross

The policy of recruiting pretty barmaids with bare midriffs only works to a point, if they are all too self-absorbed to serve customers competently (or at all).

The Queens Head, St Pancras

A new find for me, and a good one at that. Echo all the comments here: interesting beers on tap and in the fridge, good surroundings, full of trendies and guardianistas. Herbs hanging from the ceiling, and scrabble on the tables. Not busy when we visited on the Tuesday evening after work, but limited seating - still worth a perch for a quick few. Probably my new KX meeting venue - lucky gits.

The Old Haberdasher, New Cross

Hmm..some suspicious commenting activity on here. Anyway, far better place than its last incarnation. Very friendly staff, and food was very well priced for huge portions - of reasonable quality. Good choice on tap, and lots of stuff in the fridge too. Some teething troubles which they should sort out to not put off those who popped in on the off-chance, notably: aroma de urinal (except IN the toilets, where it was very bleachey), too dark and slightly under heated, sports on every TV (wheras the decor and gastro feel does not suggest a sports pub - who is the target audience?), no veggie options. I really would like this place to survive - so hopefully they will address these commments. I will always pop in for a pint whenever passing.

O'Neills, Moorgate

A fairly grim and soulless central London pub, painted entirely in mucus yellow. I popped in after a meeting at about 3.30pm for a quick half. Despite the pub being understandably empty, the staff still hadn't bothered to tidy away the glasses, or wipe the tables after lunch. Managed to drag a barmaid away from her social life, where she then poured the flattest lager I'd had in a long while (2.20 for a half of standard lager). I suppose you don't have to try when you've got a captive clientele.

The Telegraph at The Earl of Derby, New Cross

I can't think of a better pub nearby, although admittedly slim pickings. Excellent pint of Seafarers on Sunday, and a relaxed vibe going on from a mixed-age group of drinkers. Busy schedule of events each evening, presumably in an attempt to liven it up as it is quietish (which is fine by me...). A very good little pub, and will be returning - we need to keep this one open!

Royal Albert, New Cross

Yep, it is a student place with it being close to Goldsmiths but does still have some 'edge' if that's your bag (such as being offered weed EVERY time I go in). A great atmosphere in any case. Newspapers on a Sunday and Jazz on a Friday, and a nice indie-ish music collection direct from the barstaff's iPods on other occasions. Some odd ales and ciders I'd not seen before served in dimpled glasses, and veggie friendly. Always a pleasant drinking experience.

The Five Bells, New Cross

Once you've negotiated the small army of smokers and mobility scooters outside, it's a fairly tidy place inside. Mainly the older gents watching racing on the TV, but the barstaff are friendly and the beer is cheap and well kept. Not a place to bring the girly - particularly because the sight of a female on the 'other' side of the bar may be too much for some of the clientele - but fine for a quickie. I've noticed that the doors get locked at odd hours sometimes, but people still drinking inside?

Auberge, Waterloo

This pub is not going to make anyone quiver with excitement, but you will be served promptly in decent-enough surroundings. Tends to attract the suits and office crowd. The bar staff can be variable from chatty/flirty to dour/sullen - but as long as they can pull a pint that's fine. Mainly european lagers, lady-lagers and the stronger stuff, but perhaps only one or two ales served a bit colder than they should be. It is on the expensive side (just), but as long as that keeps out the reprobates from the Wellington around the corner it's well worth it!

The Wellington, Waterloo

Completely agree with Benja. Was threatened with physical violence last night by a baldy midget with scars on face for sitting in a sit that was apparently "his".

Also, as usual, poor bar service - three deep along the entire length of both bars - with only two people serving at 6pm!

I've given this place it's last visit.

The Horniman at Hays, Southwark

I have finally given up on this place.

As usual, terrible service. Very slow, despite bar being only moderately busy - bar staff incapable of multi-tasking or even remembering who was next etc.

Eventually after 15mins of waiting, arrived two of the flattest pints of lager ever to be seen. Could not be arsed to go through the rigamarole of getting them replaced, as I just wanted to leave. However, idiotic bar staff gave me too much change, so didn't feel bad about leaving our beers only half drunk.

What a shame, decor is nice, location is good, and the pies are brilliant, if you can actually manage to put an order in.

The Montpelier, Peckham

Lacking in atmosphere a bit, but still an ok place. Beer is ok, food menu is good for brunch type foods generally. Seems more of a 'wine place' than for beer. Definitely go in here when in the area, but prefer the Rye.

The Rye Pub, Dining Room and Garden, Peckham Rye

Smart pub with plenty of space to drink: either outside overlooking the common, in the gastropub bar area, in the huge sofas in the comfy conservatory area, or on the picnic tables in the green and family-friendly beer garden out the back. Food is a bit pricey but presented well, and the wine list is a bit thin on choice if you don't like chardonnay, but the beer is good (mainly higher end lager, but some Young's on as well) and it's a welcoming place turned out very well. A welcome relief after risking life and limb down Rye Lane!

Windsor Castle, Marylebone

Brilliant little place this. One to take the parents too I guess when they are visiting...
I went on Easter Sunday and the friendly staff brought us easter eggs and other snacks on the house.

The Black Lion, West Hampstead

If only there were more places like this around here. Not too pricey for the area. Nice surroundings, nice people. If it had proper competitors the food may be a bit cheaper. Good service. Fair-sized beer garden with heat-lamps.

The Czech Bar, West Hampstead

Very friendly and unassuming place. Czech lagers are 3, although they are not pints (European measures I think). Food is cheapish, although it seems to be "pork belly" with everything.

Sharkeys, Hull

Only one of a few pubs in Hull that are actually trying to provide a "trendy" place to drink in. It does get full, so go early and get fancy cocktails down your neck.

23 Jun 2006 17:20

The Minerva Hotel, Hull

Lovely little place. Good beers, friendly bar-staff, lots of little crannies, interesting and full of character. Not too smokey, no loud music...I may sound like my Dad, but trust me, it's a nice place.

23 Jun 2006 17:17

Cheeky Monkeys, Hull

Is this pub a joke? You may get away with calling a place Cheeky Monkeys in Playa, but this is Hull (same clientele though).
Baseball caps, MASSIVE(fake)gold earrings, ugly tattoo's and too much exposed fake-tanned flesh all the way.

Ha Ha, Ealing

Don't know why this pub has such a bad rating. It's fine. Had a few meals there, a slight notch up from regular pub grub. Lagers are a bit more interesting than others places, but pricier too. Ok atmosphere, but overcrowded beer-garden. Bouncers are a bit scary occasionally, but not aggressively. Music can be too loud on weekends, so not a place to chat and catch up. Can't complain about anything specifically - still on my list to visit whenever I am out.

The Lass O'Richmond Hill, Richmond

A terrible place. Dark, stuffy, with an unpleasant smell which I can only guess is coming from the old manager's remains under the floor somewhere. If the staff can speak English, they will probably be rude to you. Usually, the staff outnumber the clientele by two to one and yet it can take upwards of ten minutes for the bar-staff to even acknowledge you. Overpriced beer and 2.50 for 15 or so olives? There are three or four tables in the beer 'garden' which is actually a cracked and battered car-park. Aggressive ginger-haired type who is the current manager, who unless you are over 50 years old and buying a three course meal will not even grace you with a smile. I actually witnessed someone getting thrown out because they ordered a dessert with a pint of beer, but refused to order a main meal first. Please burn this place down and start again. Ye gads.

The Roebuck, Richmond Hill

I love this pub to pieces, and was my regular whilst I worked nearby. It is close to the American University nearby, but only used by the staff and not the students. Beer is very nice and the 'new' food menu is all one can expect from a pub plus a bit more. Interesting bar staff and regulars. The seperate 'rooms' each have their own personality and their own familiar faces. Drinkers are able to take their glasses over the road onto the famous view and watch the sunset over the river if they wish.

The Tabard, Turnham Green

Great little place. Best pint of Pedigree I've had for a while. Nice snack menu, lots of little rooms tucked away, large non-smoking area. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Music was non-instrusive, and the clientele were chatty and polite, but not snobby and suity. Definitely my first stop when at Turnham Green again.

Charterhouse, Smithfield

Nothing wrong with this place. Not too smokey, youngish crowd, good music just the right volume. Beer tasted a bit strange though, maybe it was off?
Would definitely go back if I was in the area.
