The Hat and Feathers, Cambridge

This pub has now been converted to flats

Moon On The Square, Northampton

Popped in here on Sunday afternoon whilst waiting for a bus. Very large pub as usual for Wetherspoons. Right in the centre of Northampton and close to the Market and the bus station. It was quiet and there was plenty of room. Some very local beers that I had not tried before. Beer was in good condition and staff very friendly.

True, there were some lines being cleaned and true, that the pump clips were turned to the front but the pumps that were not being used were clearly marked as unavailable.

Beer was cheap at 1.99. Food was standard Wetherspoons menu. Only chicken left on the roast front unfortunately. To be expected at 1600 on a Sunday afternoon. So I had steak and kidney pudding.

Wetherspoons generally, for me, is economical and I have never had an undrinkable pint. The food is always very reasonably priced.

Incidentally this pub is in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide.

The Royal Oak, Blisworth

Visited this pub on a Sunday Lunchtime. Olde Worlde very pleasant atmosphere. It was very busy which was a good sign. 6 cask conditioned ales on Including Greene King - Abbott and IPA, and Tribute. I stuck with the Tribute.

Full roast dinner at 5.95 I thought very reasonable. There was a choice of Pork, chicken, or beef.

There was a short wait for a table which I always see as a good sign. The staff were extremely pleasant and accommodating despite the pub being extremely busy

The Boat Inn, Melton Mowbray

This pub is a little Gem in Melton Mowbray. It offers a very friendly welcome and normally four real ales in excellent condition. I understand these change regularly. There were three when I visited Tribute; Bombardier and Deuchars. Amazingly for an English pub there was a choice of forty (40) malt whiskys. Well worth a visit for the friendly staff and locals...and handy for the station, just across the road.

The Lion, Kenilworth

Visited here Saturday afternoon. Three screens all showing rugby. Good pint of london Pride and Broadside. Staff and customers very friendly. Nothing exceptional.

The Chequers Inn, Pampisford

The Chequers is an Olde Worlde pubh with beams in the centre of a small Cambridgeshire village
I visited on Tuesday lunchtime. Not you would think the best time to see a pub at its busiest and best. Real ales on were Woodfordes Wherry, Adnams Broadside, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Greene King IPA. GK is my local pint and I have tried all the others. I settled for a pint of Landlord followed by three pints of Wherry. The beer was all in prime condition. The barmaid was very friendly and extremely efficient. Handling table bookings and the bar service. The Chequers was not extremely busy but there were a group of eight. These were obviously regular customers and knew the pub well. On their lunch break I guess. There were a number of further customers some of whom were seemingly regulars. All ordered meals and the food looked very good.

Th landlord was friendly and chatty. The Chequ7ers is well worth a visit if you are in the area and more than likely a good destination for a reasonable evening meal. Maybe the Fish and chip night with mushy peas, the curry night or the pudding night. The barmaid tried to explain this to me, but it seemed very complicated. Maybe it was the effect of The Wherry.

The Hoops, Barton

Popped in again on a Thursday night. Great pint of Abbott drawn straigyht from the barrel. The locals have just set up a cheese night. Last Thursday in the month. Seemed to be going very well...there were some really tasty cheeses...I went for the Isle of Mull Cheddar.

The Regal, Cambridge

Thought it was time I updated on here as I am a fairly regular imbiber at The Regal. had a good pint of Nethergate Augustinian and then a couple of Ruddles Ordinary on my last visit, all in drinkable condition. Having had hundreds, if not thousands of pints here since it opened I have only once needed to send a pint back. My big complaint would be time to get served.

Regularly eat here too, cheap and reasonable for the price.

The Doblers Inn, Cambridge

Visited here for a cribbage league game. Smallish pub in a side street. 2 large screens and very football oriented. Lots of football memorobilia around the bar. The staff were extremely friendly as were the locals. Good pint of St Austell brewery - Proper Job and Adnams. There was also Charles Wells Eagle and Bombardier.

I'd reccommend it. Especially if you like your football.

The Spittal Brook, Stafford

My annual visit to Stafford for The National Poultry Show saw me once again making a beeline for The Spittal Brook. Not quite as busy as last year. Is this the recession? A lot of custom anyway.

Usual friendly and welcoming reception. This pub has a stack of board games in one corner and bookcases full of books lining the walls. Once a month there is a cheese night where regulars vie with each other to provide unusual and rare cheeses to sample. Beers on tap were.

Tribute....from The St Austell Brewery
Fullers London Pride..... from Chiswick
Fireside... from Morlands, now a subside iary of G.K.

All the beers were in excellent condition. Which I think all recognise as the norm for this superb watering hole.

27 Dec 2009 21:55

The Old Bakery, Kenilworth

Just been back to Kenilworth on my annual trip to The national Poultry Show. Just had to visit The Old Bakery. Surprisingly only two beers on tap Friday night. Tribute 4.2% from the St Austell brewery a favourite of mine, and Wye Valley Bitter at 3.7% from Herefordshire both in excellent condition.

The service as usual was friendly and efficient. We had a great night and I'm already looking forward to next year.

Bear and Ragged Staff, Kenilworth

Big Screen very sport oriented. Serves Greene King IPA and Speckled Hen nothing exceptional.

1 Nov 2009 12:05

The Six Bells, Fulbourn

excellent olde Worlde thatched pub with open fires situated in the centre of Fulbourn village. Serving Adnams bitter and Broadside, Woodfordes Wherry, Greene King IPA and Westons Old Rosie scrumpy cider. Regular guest beers also feature. When I visited the beers were in excellent condition and the starff were extremely friendly.

There is an A la carte menu. I didn't have a meal but judging by the number of diners on a Wednesday evening I would imagine the extensive menu provides for good eating.

The Six Bells is well worth a visit if you are in the Cambridge area.

12 Oct 2009 13:51

The Hoops, Barton

Was back here for a pint or two recently. The place seems timeless. Beer still in excellent condition. The landlord breeds Wyandotte bantams and they can be seen in the large garden. Nothing better than sitting under the walnut tree with a pint or two of abbott ale watching the birds.

18 Sep 2009 17:55

The Carlton Arms, Cambridge

The Carlton Arms is on a large housing estate. Easily the best one of the four pubs on the estate. Food is passable and reasonably priced. Good selection of real ales in very good condition. The range constantly changes as new guest ales arrive. Staff and landlord very friendly.

18 Sep 2009 17:45

The Regal, Cambridge

I think that some of the comments above are unfair. I must admit I seldo use the pub in the late evening when I understand youngsters are topping up before moving on to nightclubs. I understand that is when it gets extremely busy and queues form. I am however a regular during the day and early evening. I take exception to Boodles "So you get the piss heads and other such sorts who need to get blotto on a limited budget"

I'm a pensiomer on a limited budget and meet up with several other pensioners on limited budgets. I've never had a pint I needed to send back and in my experience the beer is always in good condition. It is not the only place that I frequent but find the service good, the beer palatable, the staff friendly and the food cheap. It's good.

15 Apr 2009 19:34

Clarendon Arms, Cambridge

This pub is a little gem. Set in a quiet back street just round the corner from the bus station. The landlord Barry is very friendly and certainly made a little time to talk to me on what was a very busy Friday night.

The pub serves Greene King Abbott and IPA. I was pleasantly surprised to also find Greene King mild on the pumps. Uniquely in my experience there were 19 different malt whiskys on offer, a definite improvement on the one or two usually available in the average English local.

The pub has a strong following for darts and cribbage plus regular quiz nights. It also boasts a small reference library for crossword and quiz enthusiast so that one can sit quietly in the corner trying to complete The Graudian crossword.

Home made food is served with a regular daily special, there were lots eating which is usually in my opinion a good sign. I didn't actually eat here but it looks good and I shall definitely place it on my places to check out list.

The British Queen, Cambridge

This pub is now an Indian Restaurant.

22 Jan 2009 18:17

The Blackamoors Head, Cambridge

Yep surely has gone.

22 Jan 2009 18:15

The Spittal Brook, Stafford

This is a great pub. Very busy when I was in on a Friday and Saturday night. Excellent pints of Black Sheep, Everards Tiger, Adnams Explorer & Fullers London Pride.

Smokers not forgotten here. There is a purpose brick built smoke room in the garden which was comfortable and had Christmas decorations. We didn't try the food but there were many people eating which is always a good sign.

The Spittal Brook was voted pub of the year 2008 by the local CAMRA branch. Deservedly a very popular pub.

22 Dec 2008 13:44

The Panton Arms, Cambridge

What a difference a year makes.

12 Dec 2008 20:38

The White Horse, Barton

This pub has had a long succession of landlords over the past couple of years. The couple of times I have been in lately the beer has not been good and the food was nothing to write home about. I agree with the previous post. If you want to drink in Barton The Hoops is a better bet.

12 Dec 2008 19:56

The Old Bakery, Kenilworth

Went to this pub a year ago and just called back for two nights. Place was packed on the Friday night and I am not surprised, tried all six beers and everyone was in perfect condition,. In the end settled on the Tribute from the St Austell brewery. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and there was a great atmosphere. If you're at a loose end in Kenilworth this is definitely the place to be.

12 Dec 2008 19:49

The Rupert Brooke, Grantchester

This is definitely a pub aimed at the Grantchester tourist business. More of a restaurant than a real pub. However the food was passable but not the best meal I have eaten and the beer was in reasonable condition. The Blue Ball or Green Man offer a better deal for the pub man.

18 Nov 2008 22:41

The Panton Arms, Cambridge

Visited this pub at lunchtime at 1p.m. today. It is very local to me and seemed the ideal place to take some visitors from Nottingham for lunch. The place was deserted and I am not surprised. Typical pub grub which is not a problem. Te wo of us had fish and chipos and the other ham egg and chips. The chips were cold, and the fish was very dry, and all was served with salad.

The only redeeming feature was that the beer was in very good condition Greene King IPA.

18 Nov 2008 22:32

Hogshead, Cambridge

The reason it is called the Avery is because before it was part of The Hogshead pub chain it was Avery Scales factory. Not much weighing done there now. Hardly worth a visit with lots of other stuff going on around. Better to pass by and make it to Wetherspoons.

10 Nov 2008 17:07

Rose and Crown, Histon

Not the best of pubs. Certainly not amongst the best in Histon. Beer is not the best and there are a lot of young lager drinkers. More of a Pool and lager pub than anything. Try the others in Histon they are all superior to here.

10 Nov 2008 16:51

The Blue Lion, Hardwick

Good and friendly pub the beer is good and a good range of very reasonable food wortha visit.

10 Nov 2008 16:47

The Blue Ball Inn, Grantchester

Grantchester is a tourist village a couple of mile from Cambridge. The Blue Ball is the pub that a lot of the locals use. Beer is good and friendly atmosphere.

10 Nov 2008 16:44

The Black Bull, Willingham

Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Friendly and welcoming. On the main Street through Willingham. Plenty of parking.

9 Nov 2008 18:33

All Bar One, Cambridge

This pub is absolutely the pits. It lives next door to The Regal (Wetherspoons) which has better beer better decor. It is a typical all bar one chrome and stainless steel. No atmosphere and no go for any self respecting drinker.

9 Nov 2008 18:22

The Alma Arms, Navestock

Visited this pub on a Saturday lunchtime. It was extremely busy and the car park was full. This is always a good sign that there will be a warm welcome and the food will be passable. Whilst agreeing with the comments about it being more of a restaurant than a pub, I found a very good pint of Bishops Finger and an equally well kept pint of Spitfire. Both of these beers are from Shepherd Neame brewery in Kent.

My companion was the landlord of The Hoops in Barton Cambridgeshire. He was impressed with the service and the condition of the beer despite the pub being busy. We selected from the menu and decided upon lamb shank in a red wine sauce. The meal was well cooked and presented. The practice of issuing numbers and calling these out over a tannoy system was, I feel, a little impersonal. However it was functional and certainly saved on staffing numbers required. Food was reasonably priced.

I would recommend this pub to anyone wanting a reasonable pint of real ale and a passable, not overly priced meal.

9 Nov 2008 17:45

The Panton Arms, Cambridge

This pub is a little off the beaten track for tourists but is a favourite watering hole for post graduates. There is an outside courtyard area that is partially covered. Good, reasonably priced, food and excellent beer. Greene King IPA, Abbot and Reverend James. Well worth a visit.

15 Oct 2007 21:09

The Hoops, Barton

This is a very friendly village pub in the centre of Barton. Greene King Abbot and IPA served in excellent condition. No food served here. The reputation rests on quality of beer and service. Set in a large garden with lots of seating the Hoops is very popular at weekends and summer evenings. There is a mixed clientele who are all very welcoming and very friendly.

The Hoops supports two mens darts teams and a ladies. It also supports two teams in crib leagues. It acts as a social centre for Barton and surrounding villages. Worth a trip out from Cambridge if you are visiting There is a cycle path all the way.

9 Oct 2007 14:00

The Rat and Parrot, Cambridge

Don't bother. The pub has gone now anyway. It may buzz at the weekend but I think most of it's trade came from Wetherspoons overspill. No real ale. Not sure of the new name I will check it out. I think it has become a vodka bar now.

9 Oct 2007 13:49

The Regal, Cambridge

This is one of my regular watering holes. It is a converted cinema and a lot of the cinema decor remains. Tastefully renovated as I believe all Wetherspoons pubs are. Reputed to be the biggest pub in the UK. Large range of beer as you would expect in a wetherspoon now Lloyds No1 bar. Beer always seems to be in good condition. Usual Wetherspoon range of meals.Including full breakfasts from 0900 til Noon 24/7 Cheap and cheerful but good value. Friendly atmosphere at Lunchtimes. Very busy in the evenings. Sometimes queues to get in.

9 Oct 2007 13:41

The Eagle, Cambridge

This pub is right in the centre of Cambridge very close to the oldest colleges. It is therefore very much used by Undergraduates and Tourists. It was a coaching inn. It also has an outdoor area (courtyard) that was used for outdoor plays. the courtyard is overlooked by balconies from where the audience watched.
Much other history as mentioned above. Worth a visit for the atmosphere. Gets very crowded especially during term times and the tourist season.
The food is passable and the beer is good.

9 Oct 2007 13:32

The Cow, Cambridge

This pub is actually called The Red Cow. It is in the centre of Cambridge and is frequented mainly by undergraduates and tourists. It is very close to the oldest colleges.
