The Bucks Head, Godden Green

We arrived on a walk at the pub at 1.45 looking forward to a pub lunch. Nice looking pub, found a table, ordered drinks. Is there a menu? we asked, but then saw the blackboard. We've stopped doing food now, said the po-faced barman, adding "sir" for effect I suppose.. I must've looked really puzzled, cos he managed to tell us that there was a back up of so many people blah blah. Later one of my friends spoke to the landlady and she was apologetic but by then we'd been put right off. You couldn't care less mate - neither could we. Won't be back.

The Volunteer Inn, Chipping Campden

We stayed overnight here and although the pub is a bit basic it was very friendly and well priced. The local ale not impressive though. The accommodation was fine and cheap, and the meal in the Indian restaurant attached was great - nice food, big portions, Cobra at 2.50 a pint, and very friendly. Breakfast was OK. Recommend for a cheap stay and good curry.

The Royal George Hotel, Birdlip

This could be a really nice place, with a bit of effort not to be more organised and not so superior. We stayed overnight here and the accommodation was cheap, and fine. We'd eaten in another Greene King pub (the Rising Sun) the night before (same menu) - and had had a very nice meal in a great setting, so we expected the same. But at the George everything was slow - the bar, the restaurant - even the breakfast coffee was hard to get. There were lots of staff but they seemed confused, slow, and stressed out. The one very friendly waiter told us that the Rising Sun was a nice place but this wasn't! He was right. So after a slow and grumpily served drink we had dinner. They messed up the order a bit, and the waiter said "I'll sort something out". But when we looked at the food bill next morning on checking out, they'd just charged the full price. (The right thing would have been to offer a % reduction, or a free bottle of wine - something). When we commented on this, the staff member checking us out treated us to an explanation of why we had no reason to complain. Gosh, imagine how impressed we were by that! So if you want a nice pub with good food, go to the Rising Sun - it's not far away. Sadly we're always good tippers - but not this time. A shame, as anyone can see it's not really the staff's fault, it's the lack of proper team leadership.

The Feathers, Helmsley

A group of 10 of us ate here two nights running and although the bar staff were very friendly the food was the usual overpriced and not very good pub food (I think we went back the the second night because no-one wanted to say we didn't think it was good and it could fit us in, so we stuck with it).

We had puddings the first night and three of them were pretty awful - which is why we had starters the second night - big mistake as it turned out. My thai fishcakes starter at 5.50 consisted of 3 obvious small packet fishcakes with pretty much no taste. Other starters were poor - 3 cold smallish stuffed mushrooms , and a scarcely dressed walnut and stilton salad - all at 5.50. Battered cod at 10 was far from fresh, a rare sirloin steak at 15+ was overcooked, my Barnsley chop at 13+ was both over cooked and cut too thin, a venison casserole was - well, you get the picture. The usual dish of various veg was almost tasteless, except for the new potatoes, which were sour from sitting in warm water for too long. There were, I agree, a lot of chips.

To cap it all, our waitress seemed to be irritated with us most of the time - both nights.

At these prices I can eat locally in a range of restaurants with great chefs in the kitchen producing very good food. The problem of overpriced mediocre pub food in this country doesn't seems to get any better really.

The Prince Regent, Herne Hill

Some staff here are great, and others, well... We've not been there at the weekend except the odd Sun evening, so no kids. This Sun 4 drinks cost 17.25. No wonder it was half empty.
