The Howard Arms, Carlisle

Very busy on pub on match day but still didn't have to wait long to be served. Old fashioned type of layout with lots of smallish rooms. Only tried the Guinness which was very good but they also had an extensive range of hand pulled ales. Well worth a visit.

The Lychgate Tavern, Standish

Modern minimalist decor. Very decent pint of Guinness. Well worth a visit.

Barmouth Hotel, Barmouth

Called in The Barmouth Hotel to watch the Premiership footy after walking the Mawddach estuary. Ordered my Guinness and asked what bitters were available. The barman offered me Worthington draught which was pretty ordinary but failed to mention that they had Doombar on had pump. Very disappointing. Not the worst pub I've been in but not the best either.

The Last Inn, Barmouth

A group of us walked the Mawddach Estuary trail and The Last Inn was the first pub we found on our way into Barmouth but what a find!!
The Last Inn has it all. The Guinness was outstanding, the best I have tasted for a very, very long time. My fellow walkers enjoyed the selection of real ales and malt whiskeys. The barman was extremely knowledgeable about his beers and spirits. The restaurant was very busy and the food smelt delicious but I could not be deflected away from my Guinness! Outstanding!!

The Swan Inn, Reading

Cosy olde worlde pub - excellent Guinness and a good selection of ales. Friendly staff. Food was ok but nothing special but in their defence it was a match day and the kitchen was very busy. About 30 minute walk to the stadium. Will definitely call again if we're in the area.

The Axe and Compass, Hemingford Abbots

An oldie worldie pub set in a beautiful English village. 12 of us arrived in a mini bus at 15 minutes notice and all of us enjoyed lovely meals at reasonable prices served in a polite and friendly manner. There was a good choice of ales which seemed to go down well and my Guinness was good but it was the extra cold variety which I'm not overly keen on. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

The Vine Inn, Manchester

My first visit to The Vine and I was very impressed. Very busy with people taking a break from Xmas shopping. Spread over 3 floors with 2 bars, there was a good choice of real ales and my Guinness was particularly good.

The Drayton Arms, Highbury

An away friendly pub but now a victim of it's own success. Absolutely rammed full, plastic glasses and doormen now the norm. On the plus side the service is always very efficient.

The Eaglet, Finsbury Park

Visited on match day and although the pub was rammed full, the service was quick and the Guinness very good. Very much an Arsenal pub but even as an away fan we were made to feel welcome and the Chas n Dave type entertainment was great fun. We'll definitely be back next season!

The Old Wellington Inn, Manchester

Enjoyed a meal and a couple of pints of Guinness en route to the MEN arena. Very busy but despite this, the service was friendly and efficient and the beer was very good if a little expensive.

15 Nov 2013 19:26

The Fountain, Parkend

We stayed here 2 nights whilst visiting the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor. It was great value accommodation and my friends enjoyed all the real ales on offer. I'm a Guinness man and that was very good too. The landlady, Michelle, was a real star, even getting up at 5-30am to give us breakfast before we set off to enjoy the golf. We were entertained in the evenings by a folk band who were staying in the Lodge - low budget accommodation attached to the main pub. A really enjoyable couple of nights.

The Top White Lion Inn, Oswestry

Has changed very little since I bought my first pint here in 1976! When you see what they've done to so many pubs perhaps that's no bad thing. Decent beer and entertainment most weekends.
