The Golden Fleece, York

Son of TheBeerMonster was getting married the following day in North Yorkshire. So I stayed in York. The "must visit" pub was the Golden Fleece. As featured in "Most Haunted".

The bar is delightfully dark and atmospheric. The sloping floor is slightly disorientating, but added to the air of mystery and uncertainty.

We were lucky to bag a window seat to enjoy a great pint of "Old Peculier" - a beer I'd enjoyed many years ago in "Nellies" in Beverley. Then, we imagined Yvette Fielding and her team hunting down ghosts in the gloomy bar.

A grand pub, not pandering too much to the tourists in terms of slickness, that provides good beer, great atmosphere, but unfortunately no ghosts that I could find.

Well worth a visit.

The Living Room, York

Loud, loud, loud.

Son of TheBeerMonster had his pre-wedding drinks here. I was so surprised that I got past the bouncers at the door at my age!

Inside, however, the staff are very helpful and very friendly. (Well this is Yorkshire, after all!) Importantly, there were plenty of bar staff. Every time I went to the bar I got served very quickly and without fuss.

A couple of crashes as the cocktail barman dropped a bottle or two throwing them up in the air upped the entertainment.

Great views over the river, and a superb city centre location. Not the best for beer, but if you are young, beautiful and proud (which I'm not!) this is a place to go.

The Bay Horse Inn, Terrington

Friendly little pub in a picturesque village. Son of TheBeerMonster was married at the local church a couple of weeks ago.

Stopped in for a couple of "liveners" before the ceremony at All Saints Church. Lunchtime was quiet, but the landlord was very friendly and the beer was good.

We ordered food. The sandwiches were excellent. Well worth waiting for although the service was a little slow for an empty pub, especially as we were up against a deadline!

Not quite Monster, but worth a visit.

The Bunch of Grapes, London Bridge

TheBeerMonster and SonOfTheBeerMonster visited after the Tour de France hit London. The beer was good, and the service was very quick (okay it was a Sunday morning..). Decided not to sit outside, as the bar-b-que looked like a disaster with smoke all over the garden.

It's just by London Bridge station, and it's a convenient watering hole. I've not seen it in the rush hour, but early on a Sunday morning it's a very pleasant boozer ...

Moonbow Jakes, Brockley

Marcus, my friend

You've got a great place here! Laid back and friendly, we're in Brazil, not Brockley! Keep up the great work. This place has come from nowhere to top of the pops!

I love the coff!

The Nook, Holmfirth

The Nook

You want character ... you've got character! In the centre of tourist trap Holmfirth (Last of the Summer Wine), this is a genuine local boozer. Great atmosphere and sound beer. And no tourists!

Palace, Leeds

Good pub, easy parking and great beer. Get's a bit crowded though!

The Duck and Drake, Leeds

A delightful oasis amongst the cafes and wine bars of Central Leeds. A basic atmosphere with great beer. The lunchtime salami sandwiches are a real treat! If you are in Leeds and you want to drink beer, rather than pose, this is the place to go!

The Falcon, Clapham North

Son of TheBeerMonster has just moved to the area. Tried the pub last Sunday. Seems like a good local, friendly enough, with a good atmosphere, but not cheap! As suggested elsewhere, moved on for the footie!

The Brockley Barge, Brockley

Good, cheap beer .... when you can get served, although the staff are hard working and friendly.Ashtrays are not cleaned regularly and empty glasses are left on the tables. Atmosphere is okay, but, as previous posters have said, getting like The Break ten years ago. Don't lets lost this pub again!

Monstrous!

The Adelphi, Leeds

A fantastic little pub, just far enough away from the trendy wine bars of Leeds to deliver great beer at rock bottom prices, and without the yuppies. In "Happy Hour" pay 99p for a superb pint of Tetleys. One of Leeds little treasures. Go there. Monster.

The Sair Inn, Linthwaite

You don't expect to find such a little gem on the road between Huddersfield and Oldham! Hidden up a steep side road, this place is a real treasure. The Sair is a rabbit warren full of atmosphere - and it's not a twee Dales pub for the tourists, it's a Pennine pub for real. Good beer, brewed on the premises, and friendly staff. Monster!
