The Prestoungrange Gothenburg, Prestonpans

Great pub, right on the seafront at Prestonpans. Don't forget to check out the totem pole in the car park before going in. Inside the decor is arty with some nice touches of humour. Look out for the faces of locals in the ceiling decoration and in the mural on the way to the gents. Two home-brewed beers on, Fowler's Porter and Fowler's 80/-. The food is a cut above the usual pub fare and reasonably priced.

The Yorkshire Hussar, York

Pub closed over a year ago. Now a restaurant.

The Tap and Spile, Lincoln

Very friendly pub, popular with students and real ale drinkers. Beers always well kept and the bar staff know their stuff.

Widow Cullens Well, Lincoln

Attractive, well furnished bar half way down Steep Hill. Excellent mating of old building with new rear drinking area. Certainly the cheapest pint in Lincoln (Sam Smith's OBB).
However, bar staff seriously need to improve their people skills. They've mastered offhand to hostile but haven't read the chapters on 'welcoming' or 'friendly'.

The Town Arms Inn, Selkirk

Surprised to read Pup Tester's description. As a first time visitor I found this a welcoming bar, with good service, friendly staff and customers. Another visitor, on holiday from London, said that he thought this was the best bar in Selkirk.
No real ale but the standard fizz was OK. Worth a visit.

The Sportsman Inn, Carlisle

Cosy bar tucked away behind the shops. Very crowded on the Saturday lunchtime I visited, mostly eaters rather than drinkers. Staff very friendly but the Jennings Cumberland was only so-so. Pop in for a swifty if you don't mind standing.

The Kings Head Inn, Carlisle

Good, straightforward boozer. The outside does promise a little more than the interior delivers but the beer's good, the staff efficient and the landlord friendly. Close to the shops so a good place to escape to while the other half gets her retail therapy.

The Olde Cross, Alnwick

Two bar pub known locally as 'The Dirty Bottles' - nothing to do with hygiene I hasten to add but because of a grim local legend. Pay a visit to learn the full story...

Front bar can be a bit chavvy, but the back bar is calmer, though the telly is often on.
One real ale (Fog On The Tyne this visit) on handpull.

Barmaids did a nude calendar for charity in 2010. It's on display in the back.

The John Bull Inn, Alnwick

Great back street pub, five minutes walk from the theatre and well worth seeking out. No piped muzak, no games machines, just excellent beer in a friendly atmosphere.
Excellent range of whiskies and Belgian beers, the latter also available to take away.

The Tartan Tavern, Oban

A small bar right enough but that's not a bad thing as the staff and locals are both very friendly.

Two real ales on. both in good nick. Worth a visit.

The Victoria Hotel, Durham

An absolute gem! Worth visiting Durham just to have a couple in here.
Beer is always perfect and the atmosphere couldn't be bettered.
But surely claytonwest meant William Morris wallpaper, rather than Blake?

The Pilot Inn, Berwick upon Tweed

Great little pub situated in the Greens, which is almost like a little village within Berwick itself.
Spadge (the landlord) knows how to keep a good drop of real ale and how to run a happy bar. What more do you want?

The Barrels Alehouse, Berwick upon Tweed

Probably the best pub in Berwick. Beers are always top-notch and of a good variety.
Staff are friendly and the music's good. Perfect after a walk on the beach.
Dog friendly too.

The Mishnish Hotel, Tobermory

A pub trading on its past glories.

The landlord STILL stands at one end of the bar ignoring customers while his staff run around charging customers London prices for mediocre drinks.

Leave it to the yachting crowd and try the MacDonald Arms down the road.

The Horn, Duns

An eclectic clientele, perhaps reflecting the fact that it's next door to the local cop shop.

No real ale.

The Whip and Saddle, Duns

A pub that's had its ups and downs and still seems to be struggling for an identity. One of those places that isn't actually bad but at the same time doesn't offer any reason to visit.

Hand pump on the bar but no real ale any time I've stopped in.

The Plough Inn, Duns

Unspoiled, unrestored back street boozer. In the same family for three generations. Very friendly bar staff.
Quiet, no music, TV on for sports some days.
Check out the pictures of old Duns on the walls.
Beer range limited to Keg Best and Tennants Lager. Otherwise it would have scored a 9.

The Black Bull Hotel, Duns

Honest, friendly local. Best bet in Duns for a pint of real ale. Deuchars IPA plus a guest. Food's pretty good too.
Small bar can get crowded and the TV is WAAAY too big for the room but ignore it as best you can and chat to the locals.
Meeting place for lots of clubs.
