The Castle, Macclesfield

A good pub with a slightly Polish twist (the landlord seems to be Polish and in the run-up to Euro 2012 they were serving Polish food and doing Polish beer at a discount. Very quiet when I went in, but I assume it isn't always like that. Very locally orientated but nice. Lots of small rooms that make it somewhere interesting to explore. Pleasant.

The Prince of Wales, Macclesfield

A good traditional pub. It has a strongly local feel and has definite locals corners, but that's no bad thing. Decently served beer and generally pleasant. Even better when the open fire it lit. Can get very busy but that perhaps reflects how good it is.

Town Hall Tavern, Stockport

I went to this pub as it was the nearest to Stockport Station but I can't say I'll be going again. A Bank Holiday perhaps wasn't the best day to go as it was almost empty and so it was very quiet and had no atmosphere. But it also had a poor selection of beer and even the lager tasted a bit odd. It felt a bit tatty, the furniture was uncomfortable and cheap, and yet I'd have thought in that location it should have been able to do well. Generally disappointing.

The Harrison, St Pancras / Kings Cross

Very nice pub and only 5-10 minutes from both St Pancras & King's Cross stations, so a far better place to sit and wait for trains than the stations themselves.

The beer is decent and well looked after, and although I never ate any food it looked amazing and people seemed to enjoy it. Good staff and the atmosphere was great. It has trendy bare floorboards, armchairs and big tables whilst at the same time feeling like a decent traditional local. Clearly popular but not too busy.

They seem to have regular music nights, and the Irish music that was being played by some people just sitting at a table in the corner was very good and added to the nice ambience. Definitely worth going to.

The Colonies, Westminster

I've worked around Victoria for years and never known about this pub - astonishing really. And I wish I had discovered it before.

It's a pretty ordinary backstreet pub, but that's why it's pleasant. If all you are looking for is a quiet, unobtrusive pub to relax in then this is the place to be. The beer is run of the mill, but it's a lot easier to get served and have a quiet drink in than the busier touristy pubs on Victoria Street.

The Runaway Girl, Sheffield

Now called Silversmiths following its Gordon Ramsay makeover. Most definitely a restaurant now rather than a bar and apparently it's very good.

Viaduct Inn, Sheffield

This pub has now been closed for some time.

The Ship Inn, Sheffield

Although on the edge of Kelham Island this pub s not really a part of that real ale circuit even though it does do some decent beers. Instead it is a proper community pub that to this day is still the local for the old residents of St. Vincent's. This can mean that it gets very busy on Friday and Saturday night with it full of old local residents who all seem to know each other. This is all the more remarkable given that the vast majority of residents in St. Vincent's these days are city centre apartment dwellers. Where all these people come from I do not know.

Alexandra Hotel, Sheffield

This is the home of Sheffield's Irish community and you can tell as soon as you go near the pub as there is usually a group of drunken Irish smokers outside. If you are Irish and they know you it is probably a great place to drink, but as someone who isn't either it is far from friendly. Still, it always seems to be packed and the music is as cheesy and as loud as possible.

The Globe, Sheffield

A bog standard chain pub with tatty furniture, sticky tables and floor and its range of drinks seems to be based on the pile it high sell it cheap philosophy.

There are much better places nearby like the Red Lion and Showroom, so why do people go to ths place other than because it is open slightly later than some other placs.

The Broomhill Tavern, Broomhill

A decent traditional pub with OK beer. Usually frequented by students but some locals still there. A big screen for sport.

The Ruskins, Sheffield

Relatively new bar housed in what was the Ruskin Art Gallery and opposite The Crucible Theatre.

This place tries hard to portray itself as upmarket and distinctive, but these days there are lots of these places around, even in Sheffield.

Don't get me wrong. This is a pleasant bar and it does do live jazz some nights and receives praise in the local press from local business people. This place is good but don't expect originality.

The Good Companions, Eastleigh

How can a pub on such a busy road always be so quiet?

When you go in to this pub you often feel like an unwelcome stranger. This might be due to the bar staff always being sat in one half of the bar chatting to their few regulars.

The one positive is that it's lunchtime snacks are OK. Otherwise it is a very average pub.

Joe Daflos, Southampton

This bar is in a converted church close to Southampton Central station and the Mayflower Theatre.

A pleasant place to drink but it perhaps sees itself as more upmarket than it is and is a little pricey. Much of its custom is made up of theatregoers.

The downstairs is the main drinking area and the upstairs is the eating area.

The Potters Heron, Ampfield

This is an attractive thatched pub, but completely dominated by the corporate Corus Hotel that it is attached to.

The pub is pleasant but bland inside but does OK beer and food. Not the best pub in the world, but quite nice to sit outside on a warm evening.
