Re-opened after flood refurb. More like a restaraunt now, a definate move away from the bustling pub it used to be..Food good, HOWEVER.... TT Landlord £3.75 a pint, no wonder they have removed the beer board with prices on...No real cider.....the once convivial bar area has become sterile complete with anti disabled poseur tables. Also the local events shelf has disappeared. A move away from the local community, the place lacks atmosphere I am afraid. Shot themselves in the foot maybe...been dead on last few visits...Disappointing

Classic music pub, with small rooms. Often serves beers form Saltaire and Goose Eye amongst others, usaully about 6 ales to choose from

Proper freehouse. Highly rated characterful local pub, of a dying breed. Front small room to right full of friendly locals, good craic and real fire. Four ales; Taylors golden best and landlord. Two guest ales, for instance the local Vocation brewery was on at a very reasonable £2.50 a pint. Good homemade reasonable food too, in the room to the left.

Cracking pub, a friendly welcome and two real ales on from Skye Brewery, in excellent condition. Recently re-opened the pub is unspoilt with stonework, nice furniture and warm and cosy with a log burner. A real respite from the wild weather up here on the isles. Think it now opens 11-11 and will do food in the new year.

The beer is Sublime. 5 perfectly kept guest ales plus a well chosen house beer "Goose Juice" from BRidestones Brewery at £2.70. Very Drinkable.

The rear entrance from Water Street over the river looks promising past the original windows but once inside the pub has lost any character due to a modern refurb. The ale was Moorhouses Pride of Pendle and yes, second that, it was in excellent condition.

The Pub is top drawer in every way. Roaring Fire. Friendly people. Great Home made food at weekends. Graze on Homemade mini pies at £1 to leave some room for beer. 5 independent ales always in excellent condition, from breweries such as Pheonix and Outstanding, at £2.40 a pint...

Four roomed unspoilt gem. Parlour bar to right, comfortable sociable lounge to left, with bench seating. Two further rooms to rear, with darts and pool. Beer was excellent quality. A house bitter by Pheonix £1.60 pint ! Pheonix Westcoast IPA £2.00 pint. Bargain, must be a true freehouse. Great people and great atmosphere, recommended.

Returned to the Sair after many a year, on a pub crawl,following on from the Grove in Hudds. After a couple of IPA's inthe Grove and a good 2 mile walk we were thirsty for more and the Sair did not disappoint. The bitter, Special and Old Eli and Leadboiler (rich) were welcome amber -dark style beers. Quality was excellent, if served a little cold but soon came to temperature. A friend stuck with the Pale ale onslaught for an Autumn Gold. The room to right was closed, middle room was packed with fire lit, but no fire in range in room to left. Still, a multi-roomed gem. The Tilus Fractus Maximus still exists behind the new stalls.

Yep no creature comforts such as a carpet but who needs that, traditional bench seating and small copper top tables give the homely feel. And a landlady serving 31 years. Good Black Sheep and Old Speckled Hen plus guest ale. Very reasonable basic food, makes a change from the pastel gastro pubs, long may it continue. Good Craic.

What more can you say, the beer quality is second to none, served in oversize glasses, and reasonable too. They also commit to stronger Ales such as IPAs and Old ales not served elsewhere. As mentioned it can be quite easy to sink a few "dangerously drinkable" ales in here, so beware..we cannot remember getting the train back...

True Sammies pub with very good OBB , £1.80 pint. The pub had different rooms, the room we were in had a collection of glass bottles and jugs in a cabinet. Eclectic mix of characters in there, good craic.

The Albert Hotel, Huddersfield
Visited early one Friday evening. Split level inside, with what looks like some nice woodwork for the bar. Interesting features, this place could have ambience and decent ales on tap. But they are missing a trick, loud music, nobody in. Marstons EPA the only beer. Probably get the crowds later on.

Change of management from my last visit , surprise surprise, Enterprise forced em out!
Three beers on my visit, including Theakstons XB. A real empty soulless place inside, with the odd settee and high chair table and loudish mucsic, it doesnt know what it wants to be. Could make it homely , put some bench seating in , small tables, shackleton chairs and frilly lamps, make it cool and give it a bit of credibility.
Good for sitting in the square.

Old Gate Bar & Restaurant, Hebden Bridge
The renamed "Old Gate" had 8 real ales on, including Magic Rock, Saltaire and Morrhouses breweries to name but a few. Quality was good. Loads of staff, all aproned up and willing to help with the beer selection and give tasters. It's a clean - echoeing big barn of a place with stone flag floor and stove at one end. A central staircase leads upto a dining area. The seating in the front bar area consists of very few large tables

Still lots of spoort on. It's spot on. Sumptous Victorian boozer with pool table and seperate drinking areas, Beers are GK at �1.80, Deuchars IPA which was �2.25 last week but �2.80 this week and a bit sour arse. Decent Old Peculiar which is good to see, cheap at �2.80 and in good nick.

Good selection of well kept Ossett Beers plus 3 guests and an ale from Fullers. A bit slack with the tops ups when the beer heads lively but topped up no probs when asked. Silver King and Excelsior sublime. Good atmosphere for all.

Beer range now TT Golden Best, Landlord and Black Sheep Ale now bitter replaces the Flowers. Presumably the ale was too strong for people driving. Guest Ale always interesting , often local from Bridestones. Little Valley, Pictish. Landlord and Guest ales �3.10. Steep but always spot on.

The pub sign had gone and there was a distasteful modern "Dun Cow" scribble ojn the side of the building. The pub is quite small and has a barn feel to it with a courtyard and a Stunning beer garden to sit outside and look over the marshes. Excellent pints of Wherry served off handpump, �3.50 a pint. Could have drunk 10. Crab Sandwich and chips at �7 was reasonable given the location. Alternatively you can go over the green to Cookies seafood cafe and they will prepare a seafood salad for a similar price, but expected to be served by robotic eastern european girls.

Pretty hotel pub on the main CLey village Road (busy and snarled up with traffic).The interior does not match up to the character of the exterior as It's been given a rtestaraunt style makeover inside with tables and chairs for dining. Staff are polite and like to talk about the different beers on offer, one of which was the very local Yetmans, �3.50 a pint I think, and a good pint.

A nice original pub with taproom to left, a further warren of rooms beyond that, and a bar to the right. The pub has not been messed about with and is probably one of the last few not to have been given the Gastropub/hoorah Henry restaraunt treatment with pastel shades and food served on slate or other building material. Beer served to locals is a priority, so as a holiday maker be prepared to wait, fair enough. The locals were friendly and it was nice to hear pub banter, which is a rarity these days. Unfortunately the Wherry from the stillage was far too warm, I'd guess 16oC. Next tried the Adnams off the handpump which was still far too warm to the point of cloying to the glass. Otherwise the beer was good quality, had it been served at the correct temperature of 11oC. More embarrassing for Camra the pub is in the GBG but the beer in other pubs locally not in the GBG were as good quality and served at the right temperature, cool. I'm sure this was reflected by the fact I was the only person drinking cask and the rest of the people at the pub had lager!!

The Long bar at the side was a good drinking hole. It's in the GBG but the beer range on our visit was disappointing, Bombardier and London Pride. Nothing from the west country. London Pride was good condtion, �3.30 pint-Not necessarily "cheaper in the public bar"! The bar was atmospheric with local drinkers and live music..good craic but get some local brews on!

Greene King branded pub with Abbot and Otter and keg IPA. Had some Otter bitter, �2.85 now which is reasonable for this part of the world. Could be a tad on the warm side for a hot day but was perfect for the cool evening in the beer garden overlooking the sea. A nice pint.

Another rated pint of beer this weekend, North Ridings own Neilson Sauvin wonderfully crisp and fresh was �2.40 a pint. Good pub , one for a good day session. The smell of brewing added to atmosphere, guest ales complemented the house brew, a couple from Great Heck.
FBadger- totally agree re York, best real ale city in existence Id say.
Wetherspoons - below the belt - we all know they are the supermarket of pub chains and cannot be compared with. Same with Sams, we all know they are cheap.
MTT- not really- have you tried The Junction in Castleford for instance, where the Ridgeside beers are served in the landords very own Wooden Casks, and at 50p a pint cheaper than MTT outlets such as East of Arcadia.
Or the Bull and Fairhouse in Wakefield - Great Heck Golden Bull at �2.30
The Masons or Polished Knob Todmorden, local micros at �2.30..
The True independents as such mentioned can make MTT look quite expensive...including the North Riding...see above!

Cracking atmosphere on a music night, mainly Fridays and Saturdays, having good bands playing Ska , Punk and 60s , all sorts really. Packed full of folk, has an easy going atmosphere, a bit chaotic at times pogo while you drink... Beer is spot on with 3 microbrewery guests, local to the area. Cuerden Gold recently at �2.30 was in good condtion. Heated smoking area at back and access to bar.

No longer Copper Dragon, new owners have continued the tradition. Was impressed with the beer selection, 5 local micros, including a pump for Bridestones. Had a pint of Green Mill Talisman from Rochdale, good quality and a snip at �2.20..

Yes, had an expensive refurb, which is shown through its beer prices. It is Enterprise Inns, so why not search out a proper freehouse and knock a pound off your pint of beer

Still exceptional beer quality here, I find. The type of beer that reminds you why you drink the Ale! Very well kept. At least 3 independents/micro's on. Some great Beer publications and newspapers to read when on ya tod. Could do with some benches outside now the warm weather has arrived.

Large pub with accommodation near the river, but no seating near the river. Tis seperated by the road. Beer good quality Moorhouses Pride of Pendle and Thwaites Wainwrights. Very pricey though at �3.60 pint. Big restarant with decent food and windows ooverlooking the river.

Went in here as we heard an excellent folk session going on Sunday afternoon. The squeezebox , harmonica , fiddle etc made for a great atmosphere as the music echoed into the rear room. Black Sheep was on offer but there was more lively, tangy alternative, a real Cider - Old Rosie scrumpy, at �3.50. Very refreshing. Considering it is 7.3% a reasonable price and it did the job!

No longer Ods, Back to its original name BULL and FAIRHOUSE. Some changes have occurred, toiulets moved to rear to create another front room.
Compliments to the new owners Great Heck, the beer is always superbly kept. Always an interesting selection from the micros, but I tend to stick with the hoppy Great Heck Golden Bull, at �2.20 it's the best session pint anywhere

Old stone pub on the Burnley Road. Bar area with snug area and bigger room to back with a vaulted cavern. Primarily for food on evening in rear, good , interesting menu of homemade high quality food. Beer Excellent Tim Taylors plus Moorhouses Blonde Witch and a guest ale. Taylors Landlord pricey at �3.10, guest beers cheaper from �2.60. Cracking.

An original feature on entrance is more impressive the the bar itself. The decor has a modern twist with blinds that doesnt really enhance the hotels character. This place is confused as to whether it wants to be a drinkers bar or bistro restaurant. Adnams Regatta was cloudy (a wheat beer?) and too cold for October. We were asked to leave the table as they were expecting diners in 30 minutes. Stated we'd leave before half an hour was up but they gave us some Bull about the people having pre ordered and the food was coming out before they arrive...what nonsense

Having come from the adjacent pub (red lion?)which was selling Adnams as Tim Taylors Landlord we didnt have much hope.
How we were surprised.
More like a nightclub with disco and dancefloor. There was a single handpump with Oakham Inferno pumpclip. Ordered the pints and it was fetched straight form the cask from the cellar/kitchen. Condition was excellent.

Beer still good, however the manager that was interested in talking about the beer doesnt seem to be there any more. Showcasing 3 Wadworth beers and the Pictish Gold still on form, �2.50 one of the cheapest in town. This cannot be said for the food as mentioned, try the bowl of chips (I think we counted eight chunky delicious chips) for �3. Is the Beef and Horseradish sandwich really �9.95? The deals are cheaper, soup and sandwich at lunch �5.95 but don't expect to be full. The soup bowl was probably 1 inch deep. Early bird pre 7pm for starter and main is the best bet (�14 I think). Very good quality but definately no quantity..

Wetherspoons style interior makes it feel a little cold/lacking in character. Taylors range on offer in excellent condition, maybe a little cold for some. Food high end/restaurant quality and good service from happy staff.

Timeless pub with friendly atmosphere. Smiling staff. Very popular. The ale served was in excellent condition, average �2.70 pint. A blackboard above the fireplace display s the ales on offer including tasting notes. One of those pubs to sit in all night choosing from the beer menu, a gem.

The 6x was in good nick when we had it on a lunchtime, topped up with the (clean) jug- the pub opened about 1215. An immaculate beer garden you can be watching the boats on the canal. Adjacent is a well kept camping field. Quite an unchanged gem with two public rooms and no unsightly extensions- not many like this. Extensive menu - Cheese, cheese or a cheese sandwich.

Visited on a busy early Thursday evening. Pub is on Shrewsbury bound Platform. A nice converted railway building, seemed very friendly. Special was a very good pint. There were 2 guest beers in addition to the Holdens range. Great Faggots.

My first long overdue visit to the all nations. I always wanted to visit in the old lino/formica days and try the pale ale but never got round to it. As said many times before pubs don't get any better than this. Sampled the Dabley , I gather the ale as is the closest to the old pale ale I suppose! Excellent condition, and reasonable too. The location is idyllic. The bar is proper!
If you are going to waffle on about health and safety then I suggest you go to the nearest identikit chain pub where you can discuss risk assessments with the faceless manager.

Went downhill immediately after they built that ugly extension on the front. Lost atmosphere inside and the chef went.

Immaculate refreshment rooms in a thirties "refectory" style. Beer always in excellent form, usually about 4-5 independents. Classic old handpumps, real stove, old radiators and a great clock from an old jewellers add to the quality feel. Impressive.

The inoffensive Theakstons Black Bull was in good condition as was the Deuchars IPA. Great views over the bay from the cosy bar and the dining room. Downstairs bar open in peak season.

Excellent pub. One room unchanged cosy friendly drinkers bar with real fire. Another room off the entrance with electric fire and gents up the road, ladies upstairs.

The Black Horse Vaults, Whitby
Unchanged front bar/taproom is a gem. The back bar is good aswell , with a raised corner to hide in. Great atmosphere and conversation makes this the friendliest pub in Whitby. Beer first class, though at �3.10 the Black Dog Rhatas is overpriced.

Always pay this pub a visit while holidaying in Cornwall, it's a nice retreat from other places that get too busy. Apart from the exterior signs, nothing changes, which is why this place remains one of the gems in Cornwall. The interior is great, unpoilt several partioned areas and an area for drinking near the bar. A Skinners ale and Sharps Doom Bar is on offer from the cask on the stillage, both in good condition, the correct temperature for a cool evening, but maybe not cold enough for a hot day. Food is excellent, taken time over and prepared by a proper chef, there's some interesting specials at very reasonable prices, the same prices you'd pay for normal pub grub at other pubs.

A pretty cornish village pub in an outstanding area, a short walk from the campsite. All tables in the bar reserved for food between 6 and 9, however a good drinking atmosphere appears afterwards. All beers well kept although expensive with tinners �2.70 to HSD at �3.40. The HSD was very good and this is a prime holiday area, it's much like having a pint of Old Peculiar in the Laurel, Robin Hoods Bay, you have to pay for it!
Had something to eat, didnt fancy sitting in the other room over the stone corridoor, it was a nice room but done out with distasteful modern furniture, so we ate in the nice beer garden. The Fish pie was average with sloppy grey coloured mash and the steak pie was poor topped with something more like balsa wood than pastry.I suppose St Austell have to milkk the tourist trade while they can cos there is only one local through the winter...

Gaining atmosphere there was an interesting open mic night on a tuesday. Beer slecetion was good and once again east coast brewery featured, however the Ecoast session beer was not the best taste and didnt clear.

Fernandes brews still very interesting and diverse, good to see that Ossett ales havent taken over the bar. Very reasonable ale prices.

Clean pub done out in the Ossett style with stone floors and bare brick walls. Real stove in the restaurant and one in the bar, both unfortunately not lit.
Called the Silver King, for what reason it's named after one of the beers I don't know, but would have been better sticking with something relevant like "Victoria"!
The beer really is a perfect pint, Excelsior, Silver King and Pale Gold were excellent, crisp and clear in ultra clean glasses. The guest dark beer was excellent also. A Fernandes beer was also available at a bargain �1.90.
Had some food here, was good, real homemade chips. Steak and Kidney pie on the specials board was �8.95 so they must have had a reality check.
No Jensen Interceptor outside on this visit...

Refurbished in Ossett style. Clean, sparkling row of hand pumps, stone floor and a crackling wood fire in the range. House beer standard Ossett bitter was perfect quality and at a reasonable �2.05 pint. Real crisps, real ale, real fire.

Large lloyds / Wetherspoon chain pub, part of Xscape complex. The usual Marstons Pedigree and one other ale, Saltaire YPA in great condition on this visit. Get tanked up here then go skiing.

The Labour Club (Red Shed), Wakefield
A Wakefield institution, the last building to survive next to the new development zone. Red painted weatherboarded "shed." Bar to the right, function room to the left, the rooms are seperated with a concertina door that slides back when live music is played. Wooden boarding, strip lights and heaters, 1950's village hall style. If you were to protect clubs for being original and "unspoilt", then this is one of them. Beer always excellent, selection of 3 or 4 indies. �2 a pint for a session ale, served in an oversized glass. Great place to chat to different characters and one of the best places to go for a solitary relaxing pint and a read of the beer/pub mags. A true retreat.

Largish L shaped pub of a traditional nature with swirly carpets and horse brasses. Uninspiring ales on offer John Smiths, Tetleys, and the reduced strength (4.5%) Old Speckled Hen from Greene King. Tetleys was a decent enough pint, the pumpclips the traditional Tetley huntsmans. The pub seems to have been in the same hands for years, which is not a bad thing these days. Food decent enough pub grub, surf n turf �9.95 for a tender steak and scampi. Didnt fancy the "rock"- a gimmick- a hot rock on a plate where you cook a steak to your liking, costs more and stinks the pub out. Don't we pay for it to be cooked by a qualified chef?

Seems like this pub maybe a genuine freehouse again. Under new ownership and serving a range of ales from independent breweries. Of particular note were beers from East Coast brewery (ex Fernandes), the session ale was �2.20 and very tasty.Gigs advertised most Fridays and Saturdays. The fire is burning (Burn those settees) and I reckon the pub could return to its former glory.

Very popular pub though you would not believe it from these comments. Primaily a food pub, not gastro, but more of a traditional Sunday Dinner pub. Strange way of ordering at the kitchen (like the Top Brink- is it pubs on a hill?). The Hag in the Kitchen is funny, wouldnt it be boring if we had american style "have a nice day" everywhere or was a chain pub? At least it has an individual feel.The Lamb Shank is spot on, just falls of the bone. Traditional beer selection. Thwaites. Massive Whisky selection.

A great traditional Wakefield pub, narrow tiled frontage with curved windows. Beer has always been good nick , recently it was Tetleys, Green King (No need) and a guest beer. Christmas guest beer was a rich Batemans Rosey Nosey in good quality, not too cold for a dark beer. Slightly older clietel than the other licensed premises that surround it. Gents are directed to the Proper stalls downstairs, class!

The Charles Bathurst Inn, Richmond
Gastro style pub with clean modern decor and quality food, which is why most people come. Good pint of the usual round here, Black Sheep best. If you want something more homely go round to the Red Lion, a bit of an unspoilt pub, in Langthwaite, where a chat can be had over a pint of, yes, you've guessed it, Black Sheep.

The actual pub itself is good, quite original , proper tap room , a rarity these days. A lounge is to the side and a dark back room for metal and pool. Poor drinks. Started going down hill when they removed the tetleys cask and Old Rosie Cider.

Good atmosphere upstairs(more music/clubbish), downstairs and outside and a great outdoor drinking space in the cobbled courtyard. Beer expensive no cask ales but Hooegarden is sometimes on draft. Apparently good for cocktails. The restaraunt down the lane is good aswell.

The type of pub you go in when you are on a works pub crawl just because the whole group goes in as it sounds lively, which is why I went in. Boring formula house music blasting out and the usual keg and bottle products available. Corona was about �2.90. No redeeming features from any other non descript town bar.

Great pub in amazing location. Dining area done out in typical modern-ish style, has good views. Bar area is better with a real fire. Taylors Landlord in good nick, �2.65 pint. Black Sheep also.

The Hare and Hounds, Manchester
Paid a visit on a Saturday afternoon and it was just like a city boozer from the past, it was a pub atmosphere from the days of yore. All rooms jam packed with characterful folk, shoppers and a good old fashioned sing along. There was a keyboard player in the back room, must replace the piano that was at the bottom of the stairs..
Holts bitter in good nick. Timeless.

Bare boards, three rooms, splendid ceiling in two rooms, one restored the onther left alone. Beer excellent, all from independent micro's, mostly local. The Greenfield and Dunham Massey beers were perfect.

Large hilltop pub with several areas, conservatory, bar area then area to left and long back room with children allowed. The bar area is probably the best place for drinkers, however there are often meals served here also, so the whole pub smells of food. So a big food pub with extensive kitchen and menu, lots of homemade pies and a good value sunday roast �6.65, the food comes out after about 5-10 minutes, always hot and been of good quality on our visits. Great pint of Taylors Landlord but expensive at �2.70 a pint. Other beers ex Whitbread now contracted out Boddies, Flowers Original and a Guest beer. Staff are alright an all.

Old stone pub/hotel. Several areas to sit, cosy near bar with real fire. Friendly staff. Taylors Landlord, Black Sheep, Flowers Original and guest beer. Taylors Landlord was on the turn, replaced with a another beer and a smile, pumpclip turned around until sorted, sign of a good pub.Food good and substantial.

Largish hotel pub tied to Old Mill brewery. Old Mill bitter in good condition �2.20 pint, friendly local atmosphere, they are happy to top up the pints. One seasonal guest beer. Old Mill 90s refurb looking a little tired, check out the crazy brickwork.

The Stubbing Wharf, Hebden Bridge
The place is top notch. Excellent beer and cider, always served perfectly. The staff are friendly. The food is excellent, it takes a while to come . try the fish and chips, huge quality fish thin crispy batter (none of that soggy) and homemade chips

Good quality beers at the dewsbury marina. Always a good pale ale from Roosters. Nice old building, upstairs loft bar. Lost some character recently, the eclectic furniture and cushions have been replaced with formulaic ikea style dining chairs. The original cobbles outside have been covered with decking.

Rated pub, good mix of friendly people all ages. Live rock music Fri and Sat night,very busy, often some good covers such as Hendrix etc. Spot on ale, Salopian Shropshire Gold the localish permanent ale, perfect session ale and a perfect pub for a session. cheers.

Stone floors, pool room, various seating areas and boons yard, a back room for functions and bands. Beer quality has been inconsistent during random visits for the last 18 years ranging from very poor (the old days, clarks traditional at �1 pint) to excellent. Recent visit a pint of "Westgate Gold" was absolute nectar and on offer at �1.76 a pint.

Went to the plough after reading a view mixed reviews was pleasantly surprised. The rooms are nicely varied with a restaurant with candleabres and antiquities, lounge, snug and basic taproom. The food was fresh and good quality and the beer (spitting feathers special) was a tasty fruity number in good condition. The lasagne was a bargain even at eight quid. Home made chips worth getting with a sandwich. The hosts were friendly and the place had an independent feel.

Bohemian is the word. This pub is top drawer, a splendid intact example of an early 1910s/20s pub. The smell of gas lighting greets you as you walk in. 4 seperate rooms, tap room with blazing fire, pool room, lounge and the big room at the rear complete with amazing mural, period furntiure and decor. It doesn't get much better than this. The mixed clietele and bar staff are great. A blackboard lists the beers and we also had pump clips- whats up with no pumpclips anyway? been in quite a few pubs with no bar let alone pump clips. Four independent real ales, tried two, Mordue Workie Ticket and Saltaire Gold, both good condtion. The cellar bar was equally as cool for the 60s psychedelia night, no charge on the door, no arsey doormen and Saltaire gold on tap. Fun for the people not for profit, cheers, long may it continue.

Long and narrow victorian? pub with really high weindows facing onto high street. Handy for the station. Batemans beers plus two indie guest beers, a hoppy one and a dark one when I visited, all good quality around 2.60 a pint. Landlady friendly, she's a good laugh though don't know if they are staying- the pub was advertising business oppurtunity.

Yep classic brick back street pub serving excellent ale. Small front room to the left, main long bar to the right. Don't think it has changed so much , still get other beers and the refreshing Castle Rock Harvest Pale. Nice and quiet to sup late on was open til one on a saturday.

Very friendly pub serving Hopback ales in great condition. Odyssey, crop circle, and has been summer lightning. Small front room , large long room down the side bar, and yes, the one tabled snug at the bottom. Handy for bus and train stations.

Art deco theme running through the pub with a strange seperate corridoor seating area seperates the main room- looks like it used to be the exterior wall and still has windows in. Large rear courtyard. Good varying live music (on sat nights), easy alternative atmosphere. Lots of facial hair and Tats! Beer has been good on weekends. Taylors Landlord and two guests from local micros.

Traditional pub, open bar one roomed pub with real fire with a mixed clientele. Pretty good Craic on the whole, there was an Irish "band" of 2, using various instruments, fiddle, guitar with the help of a backing machine for the bass and drums. Folk session on Sunday at 3. Decent beer, Taylors Landlord and Caley Deuchars IPA.

The Black Horse Vaults, Whitby
Classic little pub opposite the old marketplace. The front bar is pretty much original, basic and full of atmosphere. The back bar has a bit more seating but still compact, easily got full on a Saturday night. Friendly people on both sides of bar. Beer quality excellent, Taylors Landlord, though a bit pricey at �2.70. Local guest beer from black dog, Adnams bitter and a couple of other guests. And a rarity -Keg Imperial.

Probably the best place for a drinking session in Reeth. Good atmosphere on a night and a good pint of Theakstons Old Pec. Blazing fire, plenty of people to serve you behind the bar. Bright lighting, pool and tv in the raised back area. Appeared to be different people running Kings Arms (Middle house) but both pubs belong to Tadcaster pub company. Stayed at Kings, cosier food driven pub with amazing fireplace but not much atmosphere. Bland hosts. Rooms have no soap and you have to peel items off the tea tray as they are stuck on to the grime. Take a cloth to wash the tea stains of the window sill, they are probably still there..

Gone downhill since them from Graziers took over. Ossett silver king usually on form, however prices have gone up somewhat �2.40 a pint when you can get it elsewhere at �2. Fire still burning, however not a patch on kerry's fires. Less cosy with brighter lights, no candles and mirrors, are we going back to Friar Tucks? Still some good live bands..

Kings Head Hotel, Ravenstonedale
Visited the pub August Bank Holiday weekend and was empty on the monday evening. Gone with the intention of having a meal. We let the barman know we intended to pay on our card, this resulted in him asking for the card and keeping it behind the bar! This has never happened to me before and thought it highly irregular, to be honest I should have asked for it back straight away. However we drunk our drinks (Dent Aviator- very good) and perused the dirty menu after peeling it off the sticky table. The menu looked good but we didnt want to eat there with my card behind the bar, so promptly supped up and took our custom elsewhere.

Great pub, nice ale, good food. Only been disapointed once a few years back when rude staff or were they doormen? began snatching unfinished drinks from us at about ten past eleven. You had to keep a firm clutch on your drink!!

Relaxing setting, by the river, the traffic noise becomes a distant hum. Staropramen lager is about the most interesting thin g to drink, unlike when it was sparrows wharf when it had real ale.

Have to agree, the beer was very poor, they need to halve the amount of ales and keep the quality. I took an ale back but they claimed the beer "tastes like that". A pint of vinegar? Rubbish. Also really quite expensive. The place remains the same so lets hope we dont lose this great Leeds institution when it becomes unviable, or is that the idea?

Great friendly hosts, fairly priced tasty ales and proper homemade food is what you get from the PoW.
Genuine local with no ponce or unnecessary flashiness about it. Plenty of games, have a game of classic pinball. Just shows what a lot of pubs could be like if they werent owned by big money grabbing chains.

Very genuine freehouse with genuine landlord, Ted has been here for almost 40 years. Always a good pint of ale from an independent brewery, usually Glentworth. No changes here! tell a lie different fireplace,the pool table has moved and the back room shut off but still feels like your front room. A proper "public house".

This is a great characterful pub in a fantastic tranquil setting. It has a nice unspoilt interior.
Ale is served from the cask, a good selection from independents.
Unfortunately the reception from the people who were running the pub left something to be desired. After being ignored for a while I managed to purchase two pints of ale. We also enquired about camping (as they had a camping symbol in the good beer guide) and were met with a very hostile "no we don't do camping". The guide suggests it refers to camping within a mile so I persevered with the conversation for a while until it was finished with an aprupt "no". So we retired to the room on the right as you walk in, sat at a table and I chose one of the beer guides on the bookshelf to look through. In came the lady from behind the bar "can you put that book back please, this is a private room , you'll have to go in there" pointing to the other front room adjoining the tap room and promptly shutting the door.So we sat down in the other room. My wife and I felt like naughty schoolboys. Later a boat party turned up, who had rung ahead. The lady was complaining at them "well you didnt say there would be this many people". So it wasn't just us! In all my 15 years of travelling around pubs of all kinds up and down the country sampling real ale I can definately say that this pub had the most unfriendly pub. Perhaps they were having a bad day.. but these people are downright rude.
To add to the stale atmosphere was the warm beer- I don't like cold beer, 11 or 12 oC will do but it was actually WARM, probably 16 o C.
This review is backdated, I'm guessing it was summer 2002 or 2003 when we visited. I regret as a Camra member not writing back then, it still preys on my mind, hence this little review.
