Very good Covid prevention system. Had a bloke directing you to any available table, and explaining the drinks and food ordering system. Food was good and nice sized portions. Had a bitter shandy as was driving later (Half hour walk back to the car).
Wonderful site and rightfully popular.

The Salterton Arms, Budleigh Salterton
As we had no luck in getting fed in the Kings Arms in Otterton, decided to try here.
Limited menu, but friendly enough. Otter ale and Jail on. Had the later, which was fine

Now opening from 16:00 until 22:00 and no longer does any food. However the beer selection remains good. Had the Gundog which was in good condition.

Dropped in for something to eat and was "greeted" by an very rude staff member, waving a Q code board at us, and saying you must scan this to order. When our companion said she didn't have a smart phone, and asked what to do. He said if you
don't like it you can clear off. Avoid. Gave it a 1, as you can't give a zero.

You might not be able to sit in the pub for a pint right now. But The Grapevine Crossed Anchors Brewery has come up with the next best thing. 5 or 10 ltr. poly pins.
They will deliver to your door (As far away as Taunton!) or you can collect yourself at the pub front door, in a socially distanced way. So far have tried the Exeporter, and Bitter Exe. Both excellent and am just starting the I.P.A. He even does Wine or Cider for those who prefer. Well done Olly.

First visit in ages. Jail Ale and T.T. Landlord on.
Now very much into being a live music venue, but not on this Wednesday night.
Friendly enough and the jail was fine, but the pool table situated in such a small front room, meant that where ever you were, you had a cue in your back.

Small two room pub, opposite the church. Otter and Doombar on tap. Had the former as was driving. Friendly welcome from the Landlord and the otter was fine.
Quite busy as was fish Friday. Well worth a visit, especially if exploring the lovely walks in the area.

Prince of Wales, Hampton Court
Popped in for a pint after a day in the Palace. Had Abbot which was fine. Also saw Youngs IPA and lager on draft. Large open area inside partly set up for diners, but plenty of tables not. Beer garden at rear was well used. Had a snack, but noticed that a 10% service charge had been added after looking at the very small print on the menu. Staff were fine but have deducted a couple of points for piling on the bill.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. Fullers house but could only see Pride on the hand pull. A few others on keg. A once off 10% off food and drink voucher if a resident. Packed out for the play offs on T.V. ( Seemed to be a lot of Baggies fans).
But was served quickly. Very handy for the station, so expect lots of customers having one before the commute home, as quieter later.

Still a great pub. Good pint of County from Exeter.
Only thing spoiling it, was the constant foul mouth of a cook(?) at the bar, constantly swearing. Don't think I would like to try any of his food, as he looked in need of a good wash.

Set up for eating now. Brighter lights new tables with menus everywhere. Still has the problem of overcrowding, where ever you try to go, you still bump into chairs. Has lost its character and now doubt any of the Lifeboat lads would use it. Quite full at about 8:30 but rapidly emptying at 9:00 when the diners finished. Had Bass and Jail Ale on,with a selection of euro fizz. Bass was O.K. but nothing special. The Mrs. Chardonay was not the best. Signs up promoting various music nights. However I was rather disappointed.

The Merry Fellow Inn, Charlton Kings
More of a locals place than the Royal. Large beer garden and function room at the back, but we ate in the front bar. The Bath Gem was well kept and I noticed Otter on as guest. (The van must have been in the area!). Smallish menu with specials, but a good selection of veggie meals as well as those for carnivores. Very friendly, but appears that they prefer card payment, as I was handed the machine when I went to pay.

Right next to the church. Large place mostly given over to dining. However smallish area to the left of the bar appears to be set aside for drinkers. Had Fallen Knight which was very nice, also saw Otter Ale was on as a guest (?). The food was good with quite a large menu to chose from. Very busy for a Thursday night.

A couple of changes of management since my last post. Latest one associated with the Park in town. Have "unbarred" most of the locals and now thriving. Has been one ale on recently, usually Otter, but had Jail on this week. It was fine and food is O.K.

First trip back in years, to my favorite Liverpool pub. Small bar with three small rooms off. No music or T.V. on. Just friendly conversation and good ales, the selection of which, has improved since my student days in the 70's. By the way the words luxury, student and accommodation should never be used in same sentence. Save the Roscoe Head.

Lunchtime visit with the Mrs. Very quiet but gave us a chance to look at the building and visit the gents, (with permission!!!). A must see in Liverpool.

Two room pub with beer garden, a little out of the centre of town.
The public was a bit scruffy, with jazz on in the beer garden. Quite busy at lunch time.
I had a Doombar as the only other visible pump clip was turned round.Beer was fine as was the food (sausage and mash). I then noticed the blackboard with several other ales on. Otter and some Ringwood stuff. Must have been in the lounge. Staff friendly enough and service was quick and pleasant.

Lovely setting next to the church. Mainly set up for food, but with a drinkers area around the bar. The Butcombe was fine and the food was very good. Well worth a visit.

Multi room pub with outside seating area at the back. I had the London Pride which was fine. Food served all day. The portions were large and Shandy Chica much enjoyed the Bass off the specials board. Friendly staff and handy for the ferry.

Still the best pub in Exmouth. Now home to Crossed Anchors brewery. Bitter Exe and 3 C's on recently along with several guest beers from localish brewers. Keeps a selection of bottled beer/lager fro U.K. Belgium, Germany etc.
Food now supplied by Ruby diner. Mostly burgers, but with a great variety of fillings.

The Passage House Inn, Topsham
Vastly improved. Ate there last week. Decent menu with a choice of specials all at reasonable prices. Washed with a good pint of Jail Ale. Friendly and knowledgeable staff on quite a lively quiz night (Tuesday).

The Bookbinders Ale House, Oxford
Just about the last pub left in Jerico. Handy for the canal.
Very entertaining French Chef (Owner?). He pointed out to us we had arrived at the magic half hour when the lunchtime and evening menus were both available.So a great selection on offer. seemed to be a changing selection of guest ales and quite a lot of bottles on offer. remembering this was Oxford, it was reasonably priced.

Fullers range of beers. Had the London Pride which was in very good form.
Mainly locals with a few diners in the back room. Friendly and helpful staff.

Finally got to recreate my own take on the Fairport Convention Nine album cover.
Handily located for the festival and those like us cruising on the Oxford canal.My pint of London pride was fine and the food was reasonably priced. Friendly staff although a little unsure about, which food you could have, in which area. Bar meals seemed to be different to those in the restaurant bit.

The Pilot Boat Inn, Lyme Regis
Beers from the Plamers range. My pint of Copper was fine Knowledgeable barmaid, talked a few other customers through the beer range. Seems to have been a few drivers in, as the low gravity beers were going well.. Food was interesting especially the Porky ploughmans and Shandy Chicas cheesy chips with pulled pork was huge.
Could do with a with a bit of doing up, as was starting to look a bit scruffy, bit otherwise well worth a visit.

Looks a little scruffy on the outside, almost put us off going in. However we were glad we did. Lots of character and plenty of nooks and crannies. The Dartmoor IPA was in good condition. Also had Legend on, but didn't try it. The Mrs said the shandy was fine too. Nice welcome from the landlady(?) who topped up the glasses without asking. Small menu with specials, and also a small appetite option. Welcomed by Shandy Chica. Seemed to be a few a locals in at lunch time, plus the odd tourist.
Well worth a visit.

Down a little alley way that also has a curry and sushi restaurant and an Argentinian place. The Tapas was good and reasonably priced. Shared a bottle of wine with the Mrs. so cant comment on the ale. entertaining waiter.

Sign outside says "Real Ale Pub" Don't believe it. Only gassed up London Pride on offer. Clueless bar staff. Tried to get a glass of Chardonnay for Shandy Chica (We were on holiday) Barman not sure if that was wine. So I asked for white wine, he poured red... London Pride also a bit off and short measures and not best happy when asked for top up. Total shambles.

Split into three areas. One being the takeaway food section. One area mainly for diners, and the other bar for drinkers. Decent pint of Ferryman and the food looked good, with largish portions. Dog friendly as the paintings on the walls of locals, I suspect, all contained pictures of dogs. Comfortably scruffy,

The pub is in the middle of the village, set back off the 'main' road to Mortenhampsted. It has a car park just across the road. The building is divided into several rooms. An area for eating just to your right inside the door, has the feeling of a tea room, with a lovely view from the window. To the left of the door is a more open area, popular with the locals and their friendly dogs. Just beyond is more seating and a little below a pool room. Has a lived in feel with no attempt to "smarten it up" All credit to the owners for this.
Nice welcome from the Landlady(?) Food was good with large portions. It was Fish night when we visited. Couple of beers on hand pump. Had a pint of Doombar which was in good form. Well worth a visit

Beers from the Otter range as you would expect. Had the Otter ale, which was in very good condition. The Mrs. and I had some tapas which was great at a very reasonable price. The upstairs section is for dining, and was very busy, but we ate in the downstairs bar. Very friendly staff. Would certainly visit again.

The Lamb and Flag Inn, Ottery St Mary
Only beer was Doombar in a bottle. No crisps and most of the optics appeared to empty. Nice enough landlady, but cant see any reason to go back.

Visted at lunchtime with the Mrs. Nice pint of Palmers Copper at 3.7% so good for us drivers. Good menu with a specials board. Huge portions at a reasonable price.
Friendly staff and dog friendly. Live music most evenings. Whats not to like.

Large multi section pub. The Branoc was lovely and the food good. Large portions as well. Quite busy at lunch time with the ladies football team and merchant seaman clubs meeting here. Only complaint was that the car park is full of puddles.

Reopened a couple of weeks ago. This time as a community pub, run by village locals. Was quite busy with drinkers on Saturday night. Not much sign of anyone eating. Proper beers from Otter, Teignworthy and Cotleigh breweries. As before the barrels are hidden from view in a back room. With only some fizzy pop taps on view. I tried the Cotleigh Owl. Hadn't had before, seemed a little off, but not enough to send back.
Friendly enough and quite brightly lit. Will try again with Shandy Chica for food and to check on the ale.

More of a restaurant than a pub, with most tables laid for dining.
Had Cotleigh Tawny and Tribute on hand pump. Food was good if a tad on the expensive side. Closes at two on weekdays. Heard another customer told that he had better hurry, if he wanted to eat. This was about ten to two.
Has recently been done up a bit, but the gents and pub sign still looking very worn.
However was friendly enough and I would visit again.

Closed as of April 30th. According to local paper, the landlady says that Enterprise inns have "collapsed" the lease and put the pub up for sale.

Decent enough place. They had run out of Abbot, so tried the Moorland Mild.
Very pleasant. Food was fine and service very quick. One little compliant. Why are Weatherspoons pubs always so dark? Almost needed a torch to read the menu.

Interesting old building. Was busy with a mixture of locals and tourists when we visited. Beer by Skinners. Pleasant IPA with a surfer themed name (Cant remember tho.) Food was fine, but a little spoiled by the chap next to us who couldn't decide how hot his wife's fish pie should be..... The young waiter didn't help, by trying to tell him the cook was a professional, and if they ordered again they should specify that they wanted their food to be hot!

Stayed in the hotel for a couple of nights. Lounge bar is more of a restaurant, but also has a busy public bar. Lovely pint of Trelawny and food was good and very reasonable. Friendly staff. All round nice place.

Crowded when we visited. Bought a beer and started to look for a seat. Front bar full so tried back room. Saw some empty tables, but when we started to walk in, was stopped by the bar maid. She asked if we had booked a table. Said no and she said she would sort us out. No reserved signs anywhere. Ended up under the coats across from the toilets. Finished beer left. Will never go back.

Recently sold, refurbished and reopened. Now owned by Stonegate, who I had not heard of before. Was getting rather run down and shabby, but now much improved. Nice selection of beer. I had the house badged from Hunters. Crackshot I think. Still quite food centred, but enough space for those just wanting a pint.

Much improved. 99% of beer now sourced from Devon. The Branscombe "Dem bones" was very nice. 3.5% and £ 2.50 a pint. The food was pleasant and reasonably priced. Very dog friendly as well.

The Duke of Wellington, Minehead
A maze of a place. Several different drinking areas, with a mix of half cut locals and lads on their way somewhere else, looking to join them. Seemed to be a lot of bar staff, but most of them wandering about, looking for something other to do, than serving. All the pump clips were facing forward, but various beers were off or in the "other bar". Eventually found they had Ruddles on. Which was nice and cheap. Food was O.K.
This was a quiet Sunday night. How on earth do they cope when its busy?

Totally changed since I was last here almost 40 years ago for my Geography field trip. It was called the Quay Hotel then. I wish people would leave things alone!!!!!
More of a restaurant now, with a sizeable area left for drinkers by the front door.
Beer range mainly from Ringwood. Not really a favourite of mine. However nice welcome and the food was pleasant. If a little on the expensive side for Minehead

Pleasant village pub. Otter and Tribute on with the usual selection of eurofizz.
The lounge and back rooms mainly for diners, but the public is more for drinkers. Was a little understaffed at lunch time with the single barmaid also acting as waitress. However the food was good and freshly cooked with huge portions. Shandy Chica had something from the lighter menu, which was also good value.
Well worth a visit

Quite a strange atmosphere when we visited in the evening. Felt like a fight was about to start, with some seriously strange customers. Beer was O.K. tho and I suspect may be alright middayish.

The Carpenters Arms, Ilsington
One room pub with a nice suntrap beer garden in front.
Hidden away down a narrowish lane from Hay Tor.
Nice pint of Legend to wash down a very pleasant and reasonably priced lunch.
Friendly staff and a nice mix of locals and tourists.
Worth a visit.

Had lunch here after visiting Compton Castle.
A food place, especially by the look of the evening menu.
However a sizeable area left over for those only looking for a pint.
The Dartmoor was well kept, and at 3.8% a nice find for us drivers.
Lunch time menu was good with interesting specials.
The roast pork sandwich was huge.
Friendly staff. Well worth a visit, but I expect it gets busy at night.

Ever changing range of ales and cider on the five hand pumps.
Never had a pint that was less than perfect here; in the three years or so, since it reopened. They also stock a large range World beer in bottles.
Good food from a well chosen smallish menu.
Live music on a Friday night and regular acoustic evenings on Saturday.
The charity pub quiz on Monday is also popular.
Best pub in Exmouth by far.

The Merriemeade, Sampford Peverell
Part pub, part restaurant. The later looked O.K. but the bar area and outsides really need a lick of paint. That said was very friendly and the Branoc was lovely.
Food was good and reasonably priced.

The Rock Point Inn, Lyme Regis
Don't be put off by the scruffy appearance outside.
The inside is nicely decorated and clean, mainly set for diners. They also have a nice terrace overlooking the sea.
The food was good, mostly fish, but a selection of other dishes. The Doombar was in good condition and Shandychica said the shandy was fine. The staff were
welcoming as well. Can't speak for the evenings, but would certainly return for lunch.

Open as a Wetherspoon now.
What a transformation. Packed at lunchtime, with any table grabbed as
soon as it vacated. Food was good and the Jail ale well kept.
One slight quibble. Some of the beers were off, but the pump clips were not turned round, even after the bar staff had told me they had run out.

The Okells IPA was good, but other hand pumps seemed to have a little German theme going on. Very pleasent curry as well.

The St George and Dragon, Exeter
Really a restaurant. However a decent pint of Tribute, to go with the meal.
The food has been good on both occasions that we have eaten here.

Reopened. Food as from next Saturday.
Now being run by the same team that has the Black Horse in Sidmouth.
Much brightened up inside. Serving Otter Ale and Pub Badged Tetley at 3.7%,
along with the usual fizzy pop, but I did notice a gassed up Bass on offer.
Now if we can get that on handpump.....

Friendly multi room pub on the crossroads, at the edge of the delightful village of East Budleigh. Parking can be a bit difficult here, but they have a small car park next to the patio drinking area.
Has a policy of trying to stock local ales. They had the Bay F.M. from Topsham breweries on yesterday. The food looked nice, with small portions on offer.
A plus for Shandychica. Pool table tucked away in a side room.
Well worth a visit.

The Brewers Arms, South Petherton
Large and friendly pub. Very handy for the David Hall. Separate dining room but food also served in the bar and beer garden. T.V. screens showing mainly sport, but you can sit where they don't intrude.
I had the Otter, which was nicely kept. Large range of Cider also on.
The food was good, reasonably priced and large portions.
Well worth a visit to explore the very pretty village.

If you want to know what a proper country pub should be like.
This is the place to see.
Hard to find along narrow country lanes. A small faded sign of a red lion on the
road side leads into the farm yard. A larger sign above the door, that opens into the hallway. On the right is the main bar. With a little corner seat and table.
Across the hallway is a second room.
The Landlady will come out of her living room to serve you and happily chat.
She will also explain the puzzles left here. I managed to solve two. But I think they were the easy ones!

Has been closed since before Xmas. A sign has now appeared outside asking if you would like to run the pub. I checked the web site given and found that the owning company want a weekly rent of over £ 800!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They also want a start up fee of £ 12,000.
This is almost double the rent they want for any other pub inb the area.
Is it any wonder that so meny pubs are shut with such gready companies.

Friendly two room pub with extra seating in the small garden outside. The later having nice views across the green. Pool table in the corner, but well tucked away from all the tables. Dart board looked well used as well.
Beers from the Otter range, including the 3.6% version for us drivers. Well kept and the Mrs. enjoyed the shandy. Good range of food on the menu supplemented by specials on the black board.
Was very quiet when we visited yesterday, but I suspect it gets very busy in the season.
Well worth a visit.

Glad to see someone else has visited the Dog and Donkey.
I can understand that times are hard and the need to serve food, to make a living. However my concern for this place, is that it will struggle in Knowle, if it relies on food alone.
Thinking of other pub restaurants near by. At one extreame you have the Puffing Billy in Exton. A restaurant with a small bar attached, to the other end of the scale. The Grapevine in Exmouth. A pub that serves food. Both have good food and a decent pint on offer. Is it enough for the D & D not to offer some proper ale to attract in passing trade? Lets hope this is on the way, as the Landlady(?) suggested to me that a beer engine was on the cards.
Not being an expert on brewing beer. I have to go on taste alone. All I can say is that for the past thirty years or so. Every pint of Bass I have had in the Dog and Donkey has been excellent. In fact, that was the reason I visited.
Bass can be so variable, from the most horrible vinergary pap to a truly memorable pint. Often in the same pub on following days. But here its always been the same. Served from the barrel. Although not Bass, all beer from the best pub in the world (Bridge Inn in Topsham) comes right from the barrel too.
Yes you can get great beer through a clean pipe, and crap stuff from a barrel.
It down to the skill of the publican.

Friendly back street local.Trelawney, Tribute and the slightly misleadingly named Dartmoor (Why not Bodmin Moor?) on hand pull.
Had the Dartmoor as was driving. Very nice too.

Topsham's forgotten pub, given the other places to visit.
Mainly for food, but a section is retained, for those just wanting a pint.
Had lunch here yesterday and enjoyed it.
Doombar, Proper Job and Otter on offer. The later being very drinkable.
Friendly welcome and freshly cooked food. They provide smaller portions,
so ShandyChica was happy.
It is difficult to drag yourself away from the other great pubs in Topsham.
Bridge, Exeter, Globe etc. But give the Nelson a try, especially if you are eating as well.

The Good News: Open again
The Not So Good News: No Bass
Very quiet when we visited, no one in the bar area. And now appears to be concentrating on food. Only top end Euro Fizz on tap. But we were told that they were awaiting a beer engine to be installed. Perhaps the Bass was always so good before, because it was served directly from the barrel. However will return again in a few weeks to see.
I just hope this once distinctive pub, does not become an another faceless
restaurant with bar attached.

The troubled history of this pub , Amazon, Prince of Wales, Rumblin Tum,
now appear to have finished it off. Large sign out side saying that it will reopen
as Bangladeshi restaurant today.
This pub was opened with high hopes by Devenish, as a flag ship house for the area. But it never took off. Perhaps the wrong location, or constant change of managers, who failed to live up the the owners high returns expectations.
Lets hope they more luck with curry in the future.

The Five Bells Inn, Clyst Hydon
Hidden away down a narrow lane outside of the village.
Just a small sign post off the B road to direct you.
More of a restaurant than a pub, but nothing wrong with that.
A large room split into various areas. Most tables laid for diners.
Cotleigh Tawny, Otter Head and O'Hanlons on today.
The Tawny was nice. Food freshly prepared and friendly welcome.
Large garden area and car park.
Well worth a visit.

A well hidden little gem of a pub. I have visited Dawlish, probably, hundreds
of times but never fouind this pub. Tucked down a little street close to the Station, along with the Railway. Both pubs having very old style signs streaching across the (narrow) street.
The Exeter has a large menu and Shandy Chica and I both enjoyed the Steak and ale pie. Large portions and very tasty. Really good to proper chips on offer. That is out of a spud, not a bag in the freezer. Well kept pint of Henry's IPA to go with it. Cosy interior with exposed beams and bags of character.
Will definatly be visiting again.

Lovely looking pub in a wonderful setting, but have to agree this is a place mainly for those eating, with a table reserved. Has never had much space for drinkers. But this is due to the layout of the building, which I am glad to say, has not been altered to modern tastes. I.e large standing area to maximise the number of drunken teenagers you can pack in......
Visited for the first time in ages and found little changed. Nice pint of Gales Seafarer. Shandy chica enjoyed her shandy as well.

Busy on a Saturday evening. But I managed to get served quite quickly.
The Exmoor Fox was O.K. and the food was as expected from a Weatherspoons.
Agree about the poor layout. We managed to squeeze in to a table in the corner, but had to ask the people at the next table to move so we could get to the seats. The table had not been cleaned recently. They appeared to have enough staff on duty.
Generally O.K. but think you could do better in Barnstaple.

Visited for the first time in ages.
New landlord has changed it from slighty frosty atmosphere (to non locals at least)
Was quite busy after the Christow Show, but the service was quick and friendly.
Didn`t try the food but looked good.
Nice range of beers includeing lower strength ones, for us drivers.
Will happily visit again soon.

This is a large pub with a garden area in front. Looks as if it has knocked through to form one large room. This leaves one area of the bar, in what is probably the main dining area, almost invisible from the drinking section.
Agree about the problem with the stares from the locals.
Although as early in the evening, the number of cars in the car park, seemed
to equal the number sitting around the bar. So perhaps all were not from the village.
That said. The staff were pleasent and welcoming. Beers from the O'Hanlon brewery just down the road. Yellow hammer and Firefly. I had the later which was very nice.
Not likely to return tho. as the Mrs and I felt were unwelcome gatecrashers at a private party.

Have always walked past this one on the way to the other excellent pubs in Topsham.
However deceided to try it for lunch, with Shandy Chica and the Captain's brother. Just as we were looking at the menu, a couple of old Ladies walking past said how good the food was.
What a change. This used to look like a kids hangout. I suspect a change of management, has brought a change of customer.
The food was indeed very nice, and my pint of London Pride was good too.
Think I will be back again soon.

On the main street just down from the Cathedral.
Interesting old building, that streaches way back from the road.
However I was almost put off from staying; when on walking in the small front bar, it appeared that only keg was available. Was just thinking about seeing if they had any decent bottled ale, when I realised that a couple of barrels were racked at the side of the bar. Fake (?) ones on top with the beer name. Potholer and Merlin's today. The barrels below were covered with a Fosters beer towel!!!!!!!
Good job we stayed as the Merlin's was very nice. Friendly staff with a very knowledgeable barmaid. She knew her beer and explained them both to another customer. The food was tasty with a couple of specials on as well.
I also heard her say that people are often confused and order keg not knowing that they serve real ale. Looks as if this a problem in an otherwise excellent pub. One nice touch is that they have a small card to list your comments on how to improve. (Will fill in next time)

Lovely old building. However beware of the floor, its very uneven.
Ringwood best and Doom bar on offer today. Not a bad menu with various specials on the board. Friendly locals with the pool table tucked at the back. So hopefully you cah avoid getting a pool cue in the back!!!

The Cannon Inn, Newton Poppleford
Quiet on a Tuesday night. But the food was nice and a decent pint of Yellow Hammer, to wash the grub down. Several specials on, that included a pint with the meal. Our party sampled various things on the menu and we all enjoyed the food.
Sadly it now appears this is the only pub in Newton, as the Exeter is set to become a house.

The Union Inn, Moretonhampstead
As all the other pubs in this part of Dartmoor appear to be shut on a Monday.
We ended up here for lunch. Glad we did. Lovely place. Nice welcome. Beers under the pub name. I didn't ask who brewed them, but my glass had a Red Rock Logo. Very nice pint, with a a sign saying the Mild proper Lager available soon. London Pride also on one of the pumps.
The food was very tasty and freshly cooked at a reasonable price.
Will definatly be coming back next time in Morton.

Not so much of a pub as a bar tacked onto an restaurant by a Premier hotel.
Friendly enough place, but a complete lack of proper beer. The drinks menu does however imply, that local cask ale is available. Perils of a chain I suspect.

Interesting pub dating from Tudor times. Just off the main streets and fairly quiet at lunchtime.
Doom Bar and a Special IPA 5.5% on offer yesterday.
Large menu. I had the Fish and Chips and Shandachica the Lasagne.
Freshly cooked and very reasonably priced.
Very warm welcome from the pub cat Silvester!!!
Would definatly visit again.

Visited with Shandychica on Saturday night.
Fairly quiet. I suspect this is a place that you "Go on from".
However Beer selection was good. The Henry's IPA was very drinkable.
Didn't get a chance to sample the food as the kitchen was closed.
But nice enough place.
Watch out for the low ceiling. The barman had to walk at a stoop
to collect the empties.
We also met the pub dog. I suspect that they get very little trouble when the dog enters the room!. But he was friendly, especially when offered a few crisps.

Visited last weekend. York was very busy as would be expected this close to Xmas. But it very difficult to find any town centre pubs with any free space.
However we managed to squeeze into one of the small rooms.
Interesting building with a fair selection of beers. But I agree that it is very expensive. Even the lower strength ales are priced at over three quid. I understand that this is right in the touristy section, but I think this is ripping off the public. That said the beer was nice and the food looked O.K. and reasonably priced.
Would have marked at 9 if the ale wasn't so dear. But will only get a 7 now.

All change. Now called the Grapevine.
Popped in with the Mrs for a pre meal drink. So impressed we stayed and ate here.
New owners have transformed the place. Now over 25's (?) with five, yes, five hand pumps. Landlord intends to rotate the beers perhaps keeping Whitbread IPA as standard. On the night we visited I tried the Stout from the Bath Ales range which was lovely. Also remember Butcombe on.
Smallish menu supplemented by a specials board. Shandychica had the Sea bass and I had the scallops. Both excellent. Will definatly visit again soon.

The Castle At Donnington, Donnington
Popped in for lunch on Sunday. Decent sized car park and welcoming Landlord(?). Had some tables reserved for diners, but a couple free and the bar area section was not reserved.
London Pride and Black sheep on, but third guest ale(?) pump empty. Believe they stock West Barkshire brews sometimes. The Black sheep was good tho.
The food was nice with a small, but interesting menu. When was the last time you saw faggots served in a pub?.

The Lock Stock and Barrel, Newbury
Visited for the first time in ages on Saturday night. Busy but not overcrowded.
The bar is in two sections. We sat near the smaller side, which had Pride, Red Fox and Amber on. The Red fox ran out quite quickly, and they didn't have another barrel to replace it. But the Pride was fine. The staff were good, but you can wait a fair while to get served in this section. Nice site by the canal and I think it would the terrace would be a pleasent place to eat on a summers day
General agreement was that this is the best pub in Newbury, unless you like to be mobbed by drunken 12 year olds.

Visited last night. First time in ages.
Largeish room with a pool table/darts located at the back of the main room.
Has a community feel about the place. Most of the other early ones seemed to know each other.
Otter, Courage Best and Hopgoblin on hand pull Tried the later. And enjoyed it.
Nice selection on the menu including a specials board. I had the Chicken and leak pie and Shandy Chica tried the Sea Bass. Well cooked and nice sized portions. Didn't stay for the quiz night but will definatly return soon.

Just spent three months in Greenock. Made the pub my local.
Every changing range of real ales, well served at Weatherspoon's prices.
Food not too bad. Shandychica even enjoyed the Haggis neeps and tatties,
but the Scotish pies were her favorite.
Definatly the best pub in town.

Half pub, half restaurant. But don't that put you off.
Friendly with a good pint and decent menu. What more can you ask.
Last night they had Bass and London Pride on, the Otter having just run out.
Quite busy early on, despite the beer festival at the Swan.
Lympstone is a great place, not designed for the car. So walk or take the train.
However if you do drive. The car park is free, after six, and only a short walk.

Very friendly pub. Greene King IPA was good. Enjoyed the food as well.
Reasonably priced and huge portions.
Hopefully is safe from becoming the third runway.
Well worth a visit, especially if you are staying at one of the nearby hotels.

The Turf Locks Hotel, Exminster
Noted a few cars parked here yesterday. They must have driven along the track from Exminster. A pity to loose the car free status. As I did not see any blue badges I assume that some people are too bone idle to walk for a formerly unique experience.
That said, this is a lovely pub in an ideal setting. They have a good range of beers and we received a pleasent welcome. Didn't have any food, but will try next time.

Two section building. Half being a restaurant and the other half the pub.
Had lunch here last week. Friendly service and the food was good.
Shandychica had the Lasagne and I ordered the Steak and Kidney pie.
The Barmaid (Landlady?) pointed out that if I had ordered from the specials board could have had the same meal for a few quid less. So all credit to her.
Beer was from the Otter range with a pump for a guest ale. However nothing on at the time. Large car park and seating outside in the garden.
A little off the beaten track, but worth visiting Talaton to sample what a village used to be like. i.e. Friendly with a pub shop and school. How few of these we have left.

Popped in for lunch on Saturday.
Quite pleasent but suffers from th chronic Weatherspoons problem of too few bar staff, to cope with the coffee machine. I do wonder if the profit on a "Skinny Latte" is worth the potential loss of the beer and food people.
However the barman, that eventually served me was good. And agreed that we don't see enough mild. I tried the Otter mild and it was very nice.
The food was a bit overcooked and bland. They could also do with a few stronger lamps. Had to fish out my flashlight to read the menu....

Things change and you should not judge a pub by its name as I did in the previous post.
Visited last night to eat with the Mrs.
Gone are the Yokels and drunk Taxi drivers. This place has been transformed into a foodie pub. Complete redecoration and now feels very pleasent. Friendly and helpful staff and the food was lovely. Shandychica had the rack of ribs and I had the curry. The Menu was extensive, and if all to this standard, would certainy eat here again. The beer choice was a little limited. With only Otter on offer, but it was alright, if a little lively.
However please change the name of the pub. As I am sure it is putting people off.

Finally got around to visiting the Fountain Head. Have often passed by but never found the car park. If you use the road from Weston, its just at the bottom of the steep hill. It is tiny tho. Other wise its a bit of a walk from the next suitable place to park.
However don't let this put you this little gem of a pub.
The Branoc was excellent, maybe piped directly from the brewery!!! Also had Summa that on draft. Lovely atmosphere. Seating out side and roomy inside with lots of little nooks to explore. Food looked good, although we didn't eat. Will visit for lunch soon.

Believe the pub is now under new ownership, hope they have a better idea about the running of a business that the last lot.

Large village pub that also caters to the nearby caravan park, at Ladram bay.
Mixture of locals, walkers and holidaymakers, with a large section set aside for diners. Beer garden at the back and fair sized car park. Dog friendly.
One slight complaint, is that on the last couple of occasions we visited. The tables in the "pub" section, were cleared slowly and not wiped after diners had finished. Beer tends to be from the Otter range, but always well kept and "guest" ales often available

Small bar area, that caters mostly for diners, awaiting a table.
However was quite pleasent when Shandy Chica and I visited last year.
So we returned a few days later to eat.
Food was good and will be be visiting again soon.
Should soon be available to walkers when the next section of the river side path opens.

Last time I visited this was called the Deer Leap.
I think the change of name has dragged it down.
Dirty, slow service, probably due to the bar staff having to put up with a drunk too far gone to speak or think clearly.
The mode of dress required, appears to be a neck tatoo and long dirty shorts. The whole place smelt of greasy food and toilets.
The IPA was O.K. tho. and the staff tried to cope, although all seemingly appeared to be about twelve years old.
What a disapointment for a pub in such a good location.
I will award a two just for the pint.

Tucked away in a small village. The lounge is mainly for food, but a small public bar for drinkers. Even has a dart board, but not much room, so hope your aim is good! Worth a visit.

Had lunch here yesterday. Not a huge selection of ale.
I tried the Exmoor stag(?) it was O.K. Shandychica had John Smith's extra cold in her shandy. The bar man took off the sprinkler when asked, but she thought it was too sweet. Maybe the lemonade. The food was nice. I had the Shank of Lamb and the Mrs had a pasta thing, which she said was tasty. Quite busy, but the staff seemed to be able to cope.
Does need a good clean tho. The interior is quite gloomy and felt grubby.
The menus and table adverts were stained and torn, giving a poor impression as I guess most people come here to eat.
Could do a lot better.

Had a meal here last night with Shandychica and the lad.
The food was tasty, well presented and freshly cooked.
The Bass was well kept and shandy up to standard.
Friendly staff and welcomimg, with an open fire in the lounge.
Didn't visit the public bar but it seemed well used for early on a Thursday night.
Perhaps tending towards the food side in the lounge, but several were sat at bar with a pint. The bar height did seem a little high, felt a little like the first day at school, for a small child..... But overall I will definatly visit again and have recommended others to visit.

Recently reopened.
Now appears to be concentrating on the food side.
Had a very pleasent meal last night with the Mrs. and a couple of friends.
Good selection on the menu at a reasonable price.
However the bar side seemed to a little understaffed. In fact quite a long wait to get served, even tho. we tried ringing the time bell(?).
The Otter bitter was O.K. but when someone else ordered the Abbot and it was undrinkable The Landlord explained that the barrel was almost empty.
Perhaps it would be better to take the beer off at this stage.
Well worth a visit, but please keep a eye on the beer.

The Rugglestone Inn, Widecombe in the Moor
Quite busy for a Saturday afternoon in October, but the service was good and the food we ordered was pleasent and well cooked.
Good range of beer. I had the Dartmoor and enjoyed it with the views outside.
Dog friendly in the large garden. The Geese were also entertaining as they checked under the tables to find any left over food!

Farmhouse Inn, Brixington Farm Estate
Visited last Thursday with Shandychica. First time for ages.
Has had a large makeover. Now concentrating on the food side. In fact the sign post nearby points to the restaurant!.
This was the Curry and pint night. The food looked good and seemed reasonably priced. The Abbot was nice and shandy upto Shandychica's standards. Staff seemed friendly, quick service even tho. it was busy at 7:30ish
Special section set aside for families, with the main bar well signed for grown ups only.
Will visit again and try the grub.

Superb location on the Quay.
Had lunch with Shandy Chica. Food was reasonable and well cooked.

Nice pint of Tribute. Very friendly, but a little concerned, that not only was Shandy Chica's Lasagne was not warmed through, but the couple sitting near us, also sent their meals back to be heated.
The problem seemed to be a lack of organisation and perhaps rushed staff.
However will visit again. Hope this was just a one off.

Visited last night. The Speckled hen tasted a bit off, but the Otter was fine, until it ran out. Appears to be under new management and heard talk the CCTV cameras and possibly, recording gear, have been used to ban locals for making less than pleasent comments about the landlord!!!!

Had lunch here today with Shandychica.
Great transformation from a scruffy town centre local (on my last visit about ten years ago!) to a pleasent foodie pub.
The food was freshly prepared and tasty. Friendly staff and reasonably priced for Sidmouth. One slight concern is that the staff seemed to vanish from behind the bar. They almost lost some business by being absent when people walked in.

Had lunch here today with Shandychica and the Captain's Dad.
First visit in Donkey's years. Totally transformed from the dingy little hole I remember. Now light and airy with an interesting if pricey menu.
All food appeared to be freshly prepared. Dad had the soup, while the Mrs. had the fish pie. I stuck with the fish and chips and we all enjoyed the meal.
Nice pint of Otter too. One little point. Although most people use the harbour side enterence, the "Front Door" is a bit strange. Giving no idea that their is a pub/restaurant behind it. I thought it was the door to a Painters yard.
However well worth a visit.

Had lunch here recently. Good selection on the menu. We had the Tappas type sharing bit. Well cooked and tasty. The tribute was fine and I like the option of sitting on the sofas. The only thing that detracted a little for me. Was that it is almost impossible to avoid the large T.V. screens. O.K. if some sport on. But I can't understand why anyone thinks it is needed just to show a loop of adverts and E! "news".
Friendly staff and apparently this was the day fo the Baby club. But they were all delightful and well behaved.

Just as an aside. Passed the Bowd on the way into Sidmouth. Now showing a very large sign, saying under new management with a new menu. Lets hope the new people actually get around to serving you.....

Looks great from the outside, but so disapointing inside. Tried to order some food, but the clock watching barmaid said I was five minutes too early....
Almost walked out, but thought we would try it. Food O.K. but was ruined for the Mrs, by the weird man sitting at the next table. Who stared at her while I was in the loo. He seems to be fixture unfortunatly.

Pre curry pub. Has been brightened up recently, but horrified to find that they do not serve beer. Well I suppose they have a tap for John Smith's extra smooth, but is that really beer..... Nice enough staff, and the food looked good and reasonably priced.

Visited last night. First time in several years, as had heard that the place had picked up, after being a little on the rough side and full of bikers.
Must say I was impressed. This used to be a local of mine for ages, until a change of landlord allowed the beer to fall to a terrible standard. Even to the extent when a pint, of what I can only describe as sour vinegar, was not replaced; and I was told that was what "real ale" tasted like...
The Bass was well up to standard and Shandychia enjoyed her shandy as well. The one slight down side is the pool table in what was the lounge. Resulting in an excellent view of the players rear ends when you sit in the comfy seats.
Still dog friendly. Will sample the food next call.

Visited this afternoon after walking along the new footpath from Exmouth. Sat in the nice beer garden in front and enjoyed the sun (rare event this year!!) Lovely pint of Bass, but the Mrs. thought the Shandy was a little too sweet. Food selection looked good.

Must say I am surprised by Mrs Fronge's comments.
Went there last night and had a lovely pint of Branoc and we were served some tasty food. (Curry for me and Fish and chips for the wife and lad) Friendly service on a busy night.
By thew way, had earlier tried to eat in the Bowd......
Pub about half full at 7:30 on a Friday night. As soon as we picked up the menu a hassled waitress(?) told us that no more food as they have a few big tables and will not get them served.......
I wonder if the manager knows she is turning away cash paying customers. I sometime think we have to wake up and realise that running a business requires serving people and perhaps we can expect to be busy in the middle of the summer. Maybe that is why we see so meny places boarded up and the previous owners wringing their hands and saying that we have no trade.

A real find. Hidden away in the less touristy part of Dartmouth. Have only visited to eat in the upstairs restaurant, but the ever helpful staff will bring a pint to your table. The food is excellent and well thought out. Beer is good and reasonably priced for Dartmouth.
However beware of having too meny pints with your meal as the gents is up another flight of the spiral staircase!

The Beer Engine, Newton St Cyres
Great pub hidden away from Newton St Cyres down a country lane in Sweetham.
The beer range is well thought. Rail, Piston and Sleeper. I normally stick to the rail as have to drive here. The train would be helpful, but does not always stop, and its a long walk back home!!!
Food always appears to be freshly cooked, so be prepared for a little wait, but well worth it.

Can get crowded with diners, but the food and beer has always been good. Lovely setting, sit outside on fine day and drink in the wonderful views as well.
Varied menu that can cater for vegans as well.
Well worth a visit.

See some things never change.
Similar sort of thing happened on my last visit about ten years ago. Not sure if the same staff, but have never returned to this one.

Visited in October 07. Fantastic setting. Nice pint and good lunch time food. The snug is wonderful with the locals mixing well with the countless visitors.
See Mr Crow visited on new years eve. What a surprise that he found the service slow and food not the top of the range. Perhaps this day is a local holiday in those parts.

Nice friendly pub on a busy corner. The junction outside has a weird set up for the traffic lights, so take care crossing the road!!!. Nice food at a decent price. Well kept pint.

Recently converted. I think they want to be restaurant now. Cold atmosphere and high prices. Don�t think I will be going back any time soon.

Great pub. What a Weatherspoons should be.
Beer selection was good, but service can be a little slow. The food is excellent, when I have eaten at lunch time. But havn�t tried the evening yet.
Just enjoy a decent pint looking at the great building.

Foody village pub.
Great locals. Especially when the oldies get in and play their starnge card game.....
Beer can be very variable. Barrels racked behind the bar, so can get warm and go off quickly.

Not quite sure what Weatherspoons were after with the pub.
Whoever chose the purple and dark green colours was either having a laugh or seriously coloured blind.
Everything about the place is just not quite right. The seating is bizarre. Small booths that take a contortionist to get in tables with wonky legs scattered around small rooms and the best seats at the back in the dingy lit dining area, or tables by the bar so close to the standing area that you get about ten pints spilled over you every hour. The bogs are an hours trek from the bar. But I often meet old friends on the way!!!. The beer is variable and sometimes they run out of the good stuff. Curry night is excellent value, but again they can run out by half past nine.
Staff seem friendly and it is almost impossible to push in. Good on them for treating everyone fairly.
However needs a serious looking at to make some changes, before it becomes a good pub

When Youngs took over, the pub took a sad nose dive. The beer selection was lost and then the live music on Friday nights was ended. So it quickly lived up to its nick name as The Grave.
Off the kids drinking circuit, so needs something to attract passing trade.
They decided on food. But have to say it is a lottery as to what you get. Visited on Nov. 5th last year. Two meals were good, two sent back. One for being undercooked and the other for being stale. Last weeks lasagne maybe.
Think the problem is staff. The manager seems O.K. but sometimes wonder about the catering staffs grasp of English. Had to repeat the order about three times before they understood. Beer has got better recently and the Quiz nights are well worth visiting for.
So to sum up. Good in parts. Bring back the live music. Hire a few decent workers that remember to clear the tables, and get in a few decent guest beers. All is not lost yet.

Agree this is probably the only proper pub in Exmouth. Interesting and largly friendly locals. Has seen meny changes over the years, but seems to return to a back street local every time. I still shudder to recall, when the tried to attract the G and T crevat wearing crowd. Decent pint, but could do with a good clean. Gents was rather smelly.

The Salterton Arms, Budleigh Salterton
Seems to have been in a state of flux for several years. Could be to do with changing owners. Remodeled several times and I still have no idea what the final plan is.
Friendly tho. and a decent pint. Once had an upstairs dining area, could do with this back in mu opionion.

Located in East Budleigh a couple of miles from B. Salterton.
Has got better recently, but you still get the feeling that you have entered someones front room, if you are not a local. Not too friendly and a great possibility that a local will be served before you will. Could do better.

Town pub, always busy with diners. So sometimes a little difficult to get a seat in the lounge. However does have a very lively public bar. Perhaps we are lucky in having a few left in Devon.
Good beer selection generally well kept.

Woodbury is lucky in having has two pubs, three if you go by the post codes. Bars were knocked into one several years ago. Now quite a foody place, with the locals generally squeezed in by the dart board. Food selection and quality is good, but overpriced, compared with whats on offer across the road. Large back room for occasional music and parties.

Friendly village local, with the increasingly rare publc bar, complete with dart board and interesting locals.
Good selection of food at a reasonable price. Small restaurant, beer garden and decent beer. Well worth a visit.

Interesting pub, that suffered from having a dreadful barman for several years. He surronded himself with a few cronies and made bad natured cracks about the customers, that he didn�t like the look of. Fortunatly this gentleman has left and is probably ruining the trade and name of another pub.
Good beer selection, but can sometimes get crowded and could do with a few more staff. The Folk club on Sunday night is worth visiting. Don�t be put off by the word Folk as anyone can sing anything.

Best pub in the world. What can I add about the beer?
Wonderful selection, properly kept and lovingly served. I remember Norman (Present landlady�s Dad, now sadly passed on), refusing to sell me a pint because it was �not quite right� He condemmed a whole new barrel and provided a replacement pint for free.
Mobile phone free. HMQ approved. However you can sometimes find a lager for sale. This will of course be real lager (It does exist). It will be of excellent quality as well.
Even had my wedding reception in the back room!!!!

Good village local. Built in the 20�s as a pub, and had the name changed to the Brittania, but everyone still called it the Dog and Donkey. The Bass is legendry. Changed hands a few years ago, but largly retained the character, built up over generations.

The Court House, Caerphilly
Greene King I.P.A. only thing on hand pull. Decent enough tho. Service a bit hit and miss due to back to back bars and the two barmen both on the castle side, letting those on the door side wait. They sometimes put in an appearance to hug a young lady customer(?). Quite busy on a Wednesday evening, probably due to having live music on. Happy hour poster on display but only if you have the G.K. offerings.
