Old Crown, Weybridge

fantastically well kept riverside garden; a favourite chill out spot in the summer

well kept beers and good pub food

having lived for about six years in Weybridge myself it wasn't my nearest local, but was worth the walk even on a rainy night

The Jolly Coopers, Epsom

no nonsense, no frills pub with a great Guinness

friend of mine drinks the Shere Drop and highly recommends it

pool table, roaring fire, music channel on plasma screen

just the job

The Queens Head, Epsom

spit and sawdust, grumpy sod of a landlord, chav hell, not at all welcoming, especially when the pikeys are shouting at the Chelsea/Arsenal game on TV

enter to feel welcome as VD - the 1 rating is for the pool table when it's not got under age drinkers spilling beer over it

The Angel Inn, Lymington

run-of-the-mill slug and lettuce-style with a generous nautical rope/porthole helping

visited early summer before the mad rush and enjoyed nice enough beers and reasonable food in very chilled surroundings overlooking the harbour

would reccomend this place slightly off-season when it's quieter maybe...

The Kings Arms, Lymington

stayed here just after it had changed hands in early summer and thrown out all the rabble

the new landlord seemed a tad surprised but welcoming at request of B&B for the night. nice rooms, missing some very small touches but nothing to complain about considering his recent re-furb

great beers, nice roomy B&B and fantastic breakfast, secure parking in his car park if you ask nicely!

would reccomend this place for B&B, nice people, nice pub!

The Marquis of Granby, Epsom

recently renovated loos, massive improvement! was the only previous downside to a great pub
has a slightly studenty air about the place but also a great mixed crowd of people
some nice little nooks to hide away in and enjoy a pint and a bite, and a weekly poker night
why aren't all boozers like this?
only missing a pool table, but keeps the idiots away I guess

The Symonds Well, Epsom

sky sports, efficient staff, not a bad Guinness

loos could do with attention, was almost gagging in the gents

The Dragon, Colgate

enjoyed a great pint of Sussex and a generously sized korma and tikka masala this afternoon, all very good

nice polite staff who gave us a realistic expectation of kitchen waiting time as we'd just arrived at sunday lunchtime peak - met that timescale on the button.

great going considering the fussy beard-wearing sherry drinkers inside that were messing them about

very well kept, enormous gardens, pub standard benches all well spaced apart so you get your own space - got our own corner of the gardens to enjoy the sun

nice secluded Sussex spot for sunny arvo's in the sun, highly reccomended - plenty of room for parking, plenty of room to let kids run around relatively unattended in the gardens

also very tidy and clean smelling loos

The Kings Arms, Epsom

made to feel welcome - invited to play for pub dart team :o)

very good beer, nice friendly staff and punters

went the last night the current tennants were there so experienced their send off, will be going back to see if it keeps the momentum

The Vibe, Epsom

had a shocking lager in here recently

full of estates watershed doing karaoke

didn't feel remotely welcome going in on my own

8 Jul 2008 14:16

Abaya, Weybridge

menacing door staff at entrance staring at your footwear

guest-list only, Weybridge winebar in Mayfair nightclub guise, hence has the air of a WAG/footballer wannabe hangout -

to be missed if you're claustrophobic, I wouldn't like to think what the official licensed capacity is but it's like a "how many people can we in a mini" challenge

used to stop serving tap beer after 9 as it got "too busy to serve pints" - the cynic in me says its so they charge double for way over-priced bottled beer, but surely not ;o)

but then some people love dressing up to be ripped off & drink in a bar resembling a rush hour central line carriage

if it were any more pretentious it'd disappear up it's own cellar with a pop

The Derby Arms, Epsom Downs

IMHO, this can no longer be classed a pub
more like a beefeater/steakhouse chain
no locals = no banter/atmosphere

22 May 2008 16:41

The Rising Sun, Epsom

had a pleasant few beers in here up until recently only for the staff to upset my girlfriend by talking badly about us when they thought we'd left

it's a shame the staff couldn't put in more effort as it might rub off on the chef - very bright, half-arsed attempt at a "gastro"-pub

we won't be going back

22 May 2008 14:45

The Assembly Rooms, Epsom

girlfriend and I had a shocking couple of beers but the staff were very efficient and friendly in exchanging them for something bottled

big square box of a pub with big plasmas for the football - a good spot for a game with the lads

22 May 2008 14:40

Ye Olde Kings Head, Epsom

chav-free environment worth the walk out of the town centre - a booza for the over 50's and retirement set, but also a nice spot for a quiet beer with the girlfriend

the manager is a legend, always good for a laugh, FANTASTICally well kept beer - you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer lager or Guinness, and the ales are A1
Good honest home-cooked food - nice spot for a Sunday roast.

The tables out front are a bit dicey for sitting outside, but it's the best place for smokers IMHO ;o)

worth a regular visit...

The Marquis of Granby, Epsom

first time in this booza since moving to the area some eight months ago and wish I'd found it sooner

nice chilled atmosphere (weds night - poker night) great Amstel, friendly staff, cavernous inside with nooks to disappear into, and a bit of slightly arty character, Banksy copies abound - all good

if they get the gents a bigger extractor fan It'd be a ten rating

will be going back at the weekend to see what's it's like - think I found my new local!

The Eagle, Hoxton

have to agree with a comment a few down from this one

the last three times I've been here I've swapped beers as there's been something floating in it, it's been flat, or just tasted downright wrong - hardly surprising the barman gives a look of dread when walking through the door

shame as I went there a few times last summer and it was bang on for food and beer - get fixing the probs and it'd be a great booza, if a bit full of the poncey set

30 Apr 2008 14:07

The Jolly Farmer, Weybridge

nice little pub with good selection of very well kept ales, nice staff if a little nervous of the slightly rigid landlord, definitely not a place to be caught swearing and don't expect to drink your bottled beer from anywhere except a glass as it's the rules, along with no hats :o) this pub operates on the old "country hours" closing in the afternoon...

having said that a nice sized secluded beer garden for the summer, and a cozy little bolt-hole for the winter months. used to spend a lot of time in there and still go for a bit of seclusion as it's a little hidden away behind the cricket green

The Eagle, Hoxton

caught a bite and a few beers here monday night, good Guinness, a good selection of real ales and a very well stocked bar. went for bangers and mash - was ok, not fantastic, but would go again and gladly try something else on the menu. nice enough staff, and fairly speedy service for the food, generally a nice pub in the thick of things by Moorfields
