The Dove Inn, Hammersmith

If you live in Hammersmith and know anything about a good pint you don't drink in the Dove. If you want to spend over the odds and drink a mediocre pint of Fullers in the company of idiots than this might be for you. I've never eaten the food in here as I'm not insane.

The Pear Tree Inn, Hook Norton

I popped in for a pint and a quick bite to eat. On seeing the food quality and sensing the poor hygene standards I settled for a packet of crisps. Unfortunately the beer was in very poor condition - isn't this supposed to be the brewery tap? The barmaid was extremely rude when I pointed out that the beer had been served in a dirty glass. This pub is a terrible advert for Hook Norton - surely the brewery is aware of the poor beer quality and unpleasant bar staff. No wonder it has been removed from the Good Beer Guide. Unbelievable.

The Lord Palmerston, Walthamstow

Good to see a fairly unspoilt Victotian bar (I didn't go in the lounge as the football was on). Even more impressed by the beer - 1.98 for Youngs bitter - it was on great form. I will return.

93 Feet East, Shoreditch

Where to begin? I've been drinking around London for over 20 years and have experienced the good the bad and the ugly but nothing prepared me for this. It took 20 minutes to be served. There were no real ales and only one of the draght lagers was available at 3.50 per pint. A colleague of mine ordered a glass of red wine and which tasted like rancid vinegar (what do you expect for a fiver) he was lucky - the white wine was even worse. And yet people (the young and the foolish) were flooding into this rip off joint. Whoever runs this place is obviously a genious - it must rate as the biggest scam in town. If you like having the piss taken out of you and your wallet, I thoroughly recommend that you drink here.

The Golden Heart, Shoreditch

Trouble with this place is the clientel - obnoxious mockney types. That and the fact that the unpleasant landlady can'y be bothered keeping a decent pint makes this one to avoid.

The Jolly Angler, Manchester

I've been drinking here for nearly 30 years and it still delivers everything you need from a basic boozer ie fine beer.

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

This is a great pub unfortunately let down by the landlady (an unpredictable drunk who surrounds herself with cliquey types), the smell (perhaps it's the drains) and the beer (they have no cellar so in summer time the beer's way to warm) It's a shame because it could be one of the most celebrated pubs in the country, yet alone London.

The Essex Arms, Walthamstow

An absolute gem. This unspolit pub has survived against all odds. The real ale is as good as it gets bennefitting from the loving care of one of the country's leading cellar masters. The home cooked food is on a par with the capital's better known gastropubs - Moules Marinier to die for. The friendly bar staff will happily guide you through the menu and advise on the most appropriate accompanying tipple. Cheery locals complete what is a very pleasurable experience. A "must do" whenever in the London area.

The Lord Palmerston, Walthamstow

What's the point of a pub with no real ale?
Not a pleasant place to while away the time.

The Anchor and Hope, Clapton

Great place to smoke herb and chill of a summer evening. Beer not bad too.

The White Horse, Parsons Green

Food good, if expensive considering the meagre portions. Beer average. Cliental unpleasant, loud and boorish - real countryside alliance types.

The Sanctuary House, Westminster

By far the best and most consistent pint of Fullers (or any other beer) in London. Food of a very high quality (steak and ale pie a classic) served by friendly, helpful bar staff. An absolute gem.
