The Red Lion, Handcross

I thought we had visited on an off-day but from the previous comments it looks like every day is an off day for this pub.
It's off to a bad start with a Pay-and-Display car park. I can see why they've done it to deter shoppers, but although you get your car park fee returned at the bar it's not a cheerful start to an evening out.
The ambience is OK - Chef and Brewer Olde Worlde pastiche - and the menu promises much but doesn't deliver.
Example; one chicken meal was lukewarm (a dangerous practice) and we sent it back. It came back having been microwaved so the chicken flesh was like rope. All the other meals were merely passable pub grub, although the menu reads as if the food is more adventurous than that. It is just about OK. That is all.
Service was S - L- O - W.
My advice - drive down the M23 another 3-4 miles and turn off at Slaugham for The Feathers.

The Half Moon, Putney

For anyone who doesn't know, this is a music venue of the highest order, so it gets packed to the rafters in the evenings. Be warned, stranger, it's not the place to go for a quiet pint.
Trying to get served when there's a gig on is a bit of a scrum - but the atmosphere is worth it.

The Jolly Coopers, Hampton

A proper English pub with a barman / landlord (?) who knows how to run a pub. Highly recommended.

The Ensbury Park, Bournemouth

The pits. It has been ever since I was a teenager. Avoid.

The Stoneham, Hove

The front bar is over-lit but still manages to be dull and dreary, not a great place to spend an evening. Go here for the music - basic pub blues.

The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton

This is my favourite Brighton pub. Honest, down to earth, genuine boozer with a relaxed vibe. Only don't tell too many people - they'll all want to get in.

The Marquis of Granby, Esher

Efficient but friendly staff. The carvery meal is relatively cheap as today's prices go, but if you're looking for high class cooking, look elsewhere. Menu quite interesting and probably better value for money. Standards are about the equivalent of the chain carveries (eg Harvesters)

I'd go the Marquis for a cheap Sunday lunch when I didn't want parking hassle.

The Dysart, Petersham

The new decor much better and warmer than the previous phoney castle decor. Good food, friendly staff, bright warm and with a nice ambience. Recommended.

The Idle Hour, Barnes

Nice relaxed pub. Decor of pine tables with candles on I see has been called pretentious, but it's OK. Clean and tidy, cosy warm fire in the winter, off the beaten track. I like it very much. Food is good but in my opinion maybe overpriced.
Wish someone would clean up the alleyway where it's located; my lady friend wasn't impressed by blown-about debris and dog-ends (animal and cigarette) but get past that and it's a really nice venue.

The Sun Inn, Barnes

Very disappointing as this time last year I used to boast about how great my local was. Great building, great location. But now The Sun desperately needs a manager who can kick butt. It's gone downhill in the last few months. The staff are slow and don't seem to care about the punters. Human warmth has gone.
There is a smell of drains in a couple of the small rooms off to one side that hasn't been fixed in a couple of weeks (they just squirt air freshener around).
On the plus side they serve good chips.
