The Fat Pig, Exeter

Stopped for a quick one before dinner across the road - lively atmosphere, interesting beers and their own cider. Worth a look.

The Kenton Arms, Homerton

When we went in on a Friday early evening it was scissor, paper, stone hour. If you beat the barmaid, your round was half price. lots of nice touches like that and enough good beers to keep you interested.

Oddfellows Arms, Exeter

Good pint of Proper Job and a very decent roast (cooked in the open kitchen). A good bet in central Exeter, which is deprived of agreeable pubs.

The Old Ship, Hackney

Service has improved recently and they now have four rotating real ales (the waiter claimed they changed every 48 hours!) rather than the previously unvaried diet of Pride, Timmy Taylor, Deuchars and Doom Bar.

Good food and the best pub by far in the Mare St area.

The Portcullis Inn, Bristol

Came to shelter from the torrential rain to be greeted by a yapping dog, but a very enjoyable selection of broadly local ales. A nice find. It's Clifton so of course it is expensive, but a good spot.

The Mortal Man Inn, Troutbeck

Well done to the guys who have taken it over with best intentions following recent troubles. Their reign started slightly chaotically but reports are they are getting back on track - potential to be a truly great pub.

Yucatan, Stoke Newington

Good place to watch the game. I was in last year for Man United - Newcastle and met two guys from Bilbao (where i had been the week before for a game) who had been told this was the place to be to watch their match - probably 8 different matches on in all.

The Harcourt Arms, Oxford

Favourite pub in Oxford - too expensive to frequent on too regular a basis as a student, but that is probably a blessing for the atmosphere. Fuller's beers, board games and pints of pistachios.

The Albion, Bethnal Green

Good football pub - get a good atmosphere for matches without too many dickheads. Ale selection is indeed slim, but there is often an unusual guest and the clientele is varied.

The Railway Tavern, Hackney

It has been improved and the drug dealing is less ostentatious and barstaff now clueless rather than unpleasant, but beer still disappointing and overpriced.
