The Star Inn, Bath

If CAMRA ran the world, all pubs would be like this, basic with little distraction from the beer and rich in nooks, with indeed the odd cranny to boot. Self-consciously old-fashioned but none the worse for that, and excellent of its type. The Abbey ales are superbly kept.

The Coeur de Lion, Bath

Cosy little place, excellent locally-brewed Abbey ales on draught. Highly recommended.

The Railway Tavern, Carshalton

Capable, rather basic little suburban pub, handily placed for the railway station,Fuller's London Pride was well kept (but is the cellar really the best in the South-East?? Wow!), Modest and unassuming place which accommodated visiting football fans graciously on my Saturday lunchtime visit.

The Hope, Carshalton

This pub is clearly doing something right, as it was crowded on my Saturday lunchtime visit. An excellent pint of Hophead served by a smiley, obliging barmaid. Very middle-aged blokey and it makes much of its real ale credentials, decor and food are obviously not a priority but excellent of its type.

The Adelphi Hotel, Blackburn

Great place for a quick pint before catching your train . Good choice of 4/5 local real ales, interior much nicer than you'd think from the outside. Recommended.

Baron's Bar, Southport

This has long had the best real ale choice in Southport and continues to offer an ever-changing range of excellent local beers and comfortable seating for the somewhat elderly clientele- there are plenty of youth-oriented places hereabouts so what's the prob? Agree with previous poster about the difficulty of getting to the bar when the pub is any more than half-full: this seems to be the only pub in Southport where large, hostile people are actually blocking the bar rather than the front door.

Anvil, Wigan

If CAMRA ran the world all pubs would be like this: lots of well-kept real ales,
prompt service, lots of middle-aged to elderly men either deep in conversation or watching the racing, no food, (almost) no women / families / people under 50. Handy for a quick pint while waiting for a bus, though, and you can do a lot worse in Wigan.

The White Horse, Parsons Green

What, an upmarket Sloaney pub in Parsons Green?? Quelle surprise!! If you can live with white sweaters and Ralph Lauren polo shirts you can get on with enjoying the excellent range of beers and impressive food. Gets mighty crowded though, and plenty of push chairs on view.

The Fountain Head, Branscombe

This place deserves all the praise. Though it's a bit hard to find (and even harder to park) once you're there great local beers on tap, cosy, traditional interior, tranquil outside seating area and wholesome hearty food. Definitely worth a visit.

Sawyers, Kettering

This looks to have closed down

The Shire horse, Kettering

Somewhat intimidating. Uninviting exterior, bare interior dominated by locals crowded round the bar, and the pool table (though the players seemed perfectly inoffensive on my visit.) Not exactly welcoming, but a good pint of Burton which seems a rarity nowadays.

The Earl of Dalkeith, Kettering

As the other reviewers say, this is a typical Wetherspoon's pub but the book-lined upper bar is definitely worth a visit.
