Sir Pickering Phipps, Northampton
nice pub. visited on a weekday afternoon. friendly staff and good range of beers, although no real ales.

The Elephant Inn, North Finchley
one of the best pubs in finchley. good beer, good service, good clientele.
the real ale was of a high quality.
they do thai food although i havent had it yet.
have the football on but it doesnt dominate the pub.

the bar man DELIBERATLY served me last and despite acknowledging me continued to serve everyone around me including what seemed like an endless stream of people who came to the bar after me.
when i FINALLY got served he overcharaged me and gave me the totally wrong drinks order. he seemed to find it hillarious.

the hansberry will be making an appearance at the quays over christmas after his world tour.
he cannot wait to be back drinking double vodka and orange at the very reasonable prices the quays has.

and people tend to think the people in the picturedrome are stuck up snobs. couldnt think why.

The Catcher in the Rye, Finchley
if you are sick of the chavvy element of finchley (tally ho and surrounding pubs) its worth trying out the catcher.
its a bit more on the expensive side than other pubs but its worth paying for.
the decor is nice (although i thought the pics of john lennon on the wall was kind of trying too hard to be "trendy").
the beer is ok as far as i know, although ive only had the lager and the guinness.
food is good, a bit on the expensive side when compared to elsewhere in finchley, but you get what you pay for.
the crowd is mid 20's upwards but a wide age range. not really an old persons pub and not really a young persons pub. ive only been there at the weekend and people are generally well dressed but some were in jeans and t shirt and didnt look out of place.
the music was a little bit loud as its not the kind of place you go to dance but to enjoy a few drinks and a chat but its funky house/ dance mix works well.
its got absolutely freezing in there when i was in but i asked the barmaid if she could turn down the air con and she said no problem.
staff are good. polite and efficient.
its open to 1 at the weekends, i dont know about weekdays though.
overall a decent pub.

expensive.
and i havent heard a dj that annoying since i was on an 18 - 30 holliday

according to dj terrys official website (in a news flash no less) terry returned to the quays on the 10th november.
anyone know if this is a permanant move?

The Penny Whistle, Northampton
stick to the bottles in here. the beer is consistantly terrible. i dont care how cheap it is its just not worth the amount of time you will sat on the toilet the following day.

people seem to be leaving the quays and going elsewhere. (possibly the claddagh?)
i too was surprised by the cards being handed out for free entry before eleven.
maybe they should reduce entry prices to 3 quid rather than 5.
saw a fight break out last saturday on the dancefloor and it was very quiet for a saturday night. i remember when it used to be rammed at the weekend.

as much as he may deny it the hansberry has had a long term love affair with the quays.
it all started with an inital appreciation for dj terry the then resident dj. his mix of funky hits from the 70's, 80's 90's and naughties and his refusal to play any smiths made him a hit with the then young and impressionable hansberry.
he then fell in love with the venue itself. given his fondness for vodka and orange he was alway likely to get a bargain in the quays, especially if drinking doubles. 6.50 is cheap!
shenanigans outside with jurisdiction just cemented the affection the hansberry felt for north londons premier nightspot.
Long live the quays!

The Orange Tree, Friern Barnet

absolutely shocking

The White Elephant, Northampton
i like it. its a nice relaxing atmosphere, does good food and has five real ales on tap (i think they change them on a weekly basis so theres always a new one to try).
a good alternative to the picturedrome which is a little bit pretentious.
the quiz is good on a tuesday and always fun.
two pool tables but they are rond the corner at the back of the pub so they dont get in the way, show all the sport and have a big screen.
all in all a decent pub.

fantastic food. its a bit out of the way but definatly worth a visit.
as previous comment the menu isnt extensive but i think it changes daily (from what i could figure out, the date was on the top of the menu last time i went) and its good food.
the type of meal thats been made freshly and not bunged in a microwave ala wetherspoons.

yeah its been recently rennovated. more like a restaurant now. used to have an old country pub feel to it.
im not too keen on it now to be honest, i preferd it how it was but thats just my personal preference.
visited it on the day after boxing day and it was absolutely packed. service was a bit poor but thats understandable as it was very busy and a bank holliday.
we didnt end up staying and decided to go somewhere else. i think it will do well.
but definatly more of a restaurant feel than a pub feel now.
5 Jan 2006 16:32
not as good as it was before. gone all pretentious. theres a picture of che gavara on the wall!
full of posers who buy one drink all nigth and stand there looking moody.
all the atmosphere of an art gallery.
5 Dec 2005 17:04
rammed with youngsters on a friday. much nicer on a saturday, no boozed up kids and more relaxed
21 Nov 2005 15:53
is it a massive difference from what is was like before?
is it the kind of place you can go to and still have a good laugh or is it a bit posh now?
does it still have its irishness? whats kind of people are they trying to attract?

The Catcher in the Rye, Finchley
the mcguire hasnt had the pleasure of visiting since its been done up. but he assures me he will make a concerted effort to pop in for a pint.
8 Nov 2005 12:27
the mcguire is a man of varied tastes and venues i heard. quite the sophisticated guinness drinker and appreciator.
4.50 for a pint bottle of magners? it was pricey even when there was no where else serving it but pretty much every pub in london serves it now.
il get word to him to pop down for a few jars.
the quays misses hansberry.
and dj terry is amazing!
8 Nov 2005 12:25
went for the radio 1 thing with jo wiley. that was really good.
do great film nights on the massive screen in the back room every monday.
think they are gonna do all the star wars films back to back in a couple of weeks on a sunday. definatly worth going to.
the quays misses hansberry
3 Nov 2005 13:58
used to be a bit grotty. really nice now since its been done up. its lost favour with the old locals but i still think the change was for the good.
got rid of the pool table though!
a nice place.
3 Nov 2005 13:54
dj terry is WITHOUT DOUBT the finest dj to ever grace a mixing desk.
i LOVE him!
6 May 2005 11:21
the sister pub to my all time favourite pub the quays. its really good in here (not as good as the quays obviously) but still a great night out. the bands are really good.
cant say ive ever noticed a smell of a pet shop. maybe it was coming from you!
17 Feb 2005 19:17
i love the quays! its the best night out in north london! i always go with all my mate and get really drunk!
the bands are always brilliant and there is always loads of fit honeys in there.
all those people slagging it off dont know what they are talking about. the quays is the most fun you can have in london. its cheap as well compared with the west end.
i go there every week and i will never get tired of it.

The Sunnyside Inn, Northampton
the last time i was in here was after my last exam at uni (across the road from the pub).
the landlady got really arsey about the students buying one drink at a time. i mean REALLY arsey to the point where she was shouting at them.
fair enough it might be annoying but the pub is located across the road from a university (and a college)! what does she expect?
