The Unicorn, Ambleside

Good real ale and food pub. Visited on quiet Sunday evening in mid-October. Friendly efficient bar and serving staff. Selection of Hartleys and Robinsons beers on. Good plate-fulls of freshly-cooked food. No chicken dishes available on the night, but he Hungarian meatballs from the specials board were very good, and rare steak cooked nice and rare! Comfortable traditional pub intterior. Relatively unobtrusive background music. Highly likely to return again during this week's say in town.

Ring O Bells, Chagford

Had a good evening meal. Reasonable selection of pub ffavourites from standard menu plus specials menu. Our two meals were good quality and portions. Very satisfying.

Choice of three real ales, as per the previous review, plus two Thatchers ciders - Gold and Dry. Some lagers, too I think, but who's interested in them?

There was a sign to the beer garden, but as a cold and wet evening we didn't investigate.

Good atmosphere. Dogs welcome. Pleasant, efficient staff. Good pub.

The Golden Fleece, York

Quite a reasonable and interesting pub. Visited for food on a Saturday evening, recomended by the Black Swan who don't do food of a weekend evening. Small front Shambles bar and rear Merchants Bar down a corridor, plus further dining room up some rather uniquely crooked stairs - the whole place seems to slope to one side!

Good pint of Golden Pippin (Copper Dragon Brewery?). Good steak pie; out of cottage pie on the night (told 10 min after ordering) - replacement fish & chips was two pieces, and not small ones! Plus enormous fluffy chips (or maybe deep-fried reformed mash potato planks?). So, good portions.

Menu also contains history and ghost stories, but the place doesn't overdo this (just ignore the skeleton waiting at the rear bar).

The Yorkshire Terrier Inn, York

Sunday evening, predictably less thanhalf full, but lively atmosphere of punters chatting, largely due to one group at the bar. Barman friendly and a good pint of Terrrier had. A coice of Guzzler and Ghost Ale also on. Previously visited a year before and recall it being just as enjoyable a place for a pint.

The Golden Lion, York

Popped in on a quiet Sunday evening for food. Pretty quiet - one large room - a refurbished chain pub like many others. Good range of 5 real ales on and the Yorkshire Sparkle pale ale has gone down well.

Food average Taylor Walker chain fare. Only one staff on so had to wait to see if she could satisfy my apparently unusual request for horse-radish sauce to go with roast beef instead of ketchup or vinegar ..., though I did get a large portion of it after a while.

Music to taste of bar staff and maybe intended clientele half my age, who aren't in here this evening.

The Snickleway Inn, York

Pleasantly quiet on an early sunny Sunday evening early in June. At least 5 real ales on the pumps. An histioric pub; a framed hand-written sheet just inside the door gives a little histiric info about the pub and its ghosts - a mostly benign bunch. A local brew, Rooster's Yankee, a pale ale, is going down well. Don't do food on a Sunday evening so off elsewhere after this one pint.

The Elleray Hotel, Windermere

Sat here now. Seems a nice pub. Popped in on a rainy day for lunch - a good choice on their Lunch for 5 menu, the two dishes we chose quite nice. 5 real ales on to choose from. Jennings Little Gem going down well. Relaxed atmosphere; pleasant mix of music at a good level for private converation, but not too loud; big plasma telly in the corner on mute showing news with subtitles - terrible news about Jimmy Saville, not that that's anything to do with the pub. One to remember if I return to Windemere.

Mill Inn, Mungrisdale

Had a quiet meal here on a Sunday evening after having stopped for a drink near the end of a walk over Souther Fell earlier. Good Robinsons beer, plus guest. Good food, including Venison burger with rocket, stilton and chutney, and minted lamb and sweet potato pie. Reasonable prices, too.

White Horse Inn, Keswick

Had a good meal in here last night. Choice of three real ales on; think I had a Skidaw.
Good food and good portions. Pork steaks on a pile of black puddig mash very nice, but pepper sauce very peppery! Fortunately peppercorns could be picked out.
Seemed very popular - a number of tables reserved and others filled up by 8.

The Castle, Outwood

I went to this pub with a friend last Saturday, having a recommendation from a friend and read the reviews on here.

A good pub in my opinion: cosy, traditional English with busy pub carpet, real fires (very warm in general), and four real ales on the bar. The friendly landlord, Warrick in attendance and behind the bar and talking to customers most of the night. He even gave my friend a taster of a beer to help her make up her mind - it was a bit of an acquired taste, but soon acquired and enjoyed!

The food menu isn't extensive - only about 7 main course dishes, I think. There were many diners in there, including us, and a few of the tables were reserved. But there seemed to be a party round the back of the pub, so perhaps that's why.

The food was good though - not an excessive wait for, very tasty, but not huge portions. My lamb shank was 13 and my friend had the 12 cod in beer batter with chips and minted mushy peas - the best she'd ever tasted, I'm pleased to report.

One to visit again, especially in summer, perhaps on a walk.

If you sit by the door, be prepared to get up to open it to let the landlords bitch, CJ, in and out when she barks. :-)
