The Red Lion, Hinxton

Good pub and good overnight accommodation too. Food average in my book: mussels I had were small and chewy, the broth so salty I considered sending it back. Fiancee's pie nice, pudding not so nice. Ale good, Aspall's cider very nice. WW2 aeroplane pitcures on wall, cosy bar.
Full of egotistical uni types when I went, but that's better than it being full of chavs I suppose. Food could be better, beer v. good, accomodation v.good, service superb. 7/10

The Rising Sun, Fawkham

Not bad, and ok ales. However, I know for a fact that they use to make your shandy with beer from the drip tray if you were dining, so beware. Nice location. 5/10

The Plough Inn, Hillsborough

I agree with the comments below but would add that, in my opinion, the Guinness has always been very poor in my opinion - thin, too cold, with an unpleasant bitterness. I've eaten here three or four times, only once did I enjoy my meal. I think this place relies on its location and the reputation it probably feels it has built up through the annual oyster festival. And bad Guinness is even more unforgivable in my book than bad champ. Go across the road and into the Hillside (marginally better...but not a lot).

The Lass O'Gowrie, Manchester

Good service, good ale, great decor (old Space Invaders, Spectrums, Amigas, Atari ST screwed to the wall etc.), good pies, plenty of space.

The Marble Arch, Manchester

Best in Manchester by a mile. Great range of superb beers, friendly and knowledgable staff, lovely interior. Food looked good but didn't eat this time. A million times better than that feeble excuse for a pub that is the 'Jolly' Angler.
Go here instead.

The Jolly Angler, Manchester

Nothing 'Jolly' about this place when I went there in Feb 09. Miserable Angler more like. Utterly rude staff, nobody serving becuase the football was on. Berated for standing in front of the screen, which was stupidly placed behind the bar - where I was hoping to be served! Left soon after. Do not under any circumstances go to this pub, it is an overated dump. That doubly applies if there's football on. Go to Marble Arch instead, about a million times better than this excuse for a pub. 'Jolly' Angler could learn a lot from the Marble Arch: polite and knowledgable staff, good beer. Doesn't even deserve 1/10
