The Watershed Cafe Bar, Bristol

The good thing about the Watershed is that you can feel comfortable and at home any time of the day - a late morning pint with the papers, a long afternoon session or a more buzzy evening drink with a crowd. Plenty of seating and lots going on. Food is filling and good, but sometimes a long wait at lunchtimes - it is a big place! Always have local ales on, though Arbour Ales are not my fave. More of a bar than a pub, but better than all the pubs in the vicinity.

Bordeaux Quay, Bristol

The most grown up and genteel of the bars on this strip. More of a restaurant, but you can just drink. Enjoy a summer pint on the terrace overlooking the harbour. They always serve good local beers: Butcombe, Bath Ales, and Bristol Beer Factory. Not cheap, but worth it. Upstairs there's a very swish wine bar. You can see the harbout lights twinkling , and while your other half drinks cocktails you can sample the eclectic, but expensive, list of bottled beers.

The Portwall Tavern, Bristol

Something of a commuter pub, so very busy after work, very quiet at other times. It always has some great beers on, one of the few places to regularly do Bath Ales Barnstormer on tap. I wish theyd sort the harsh strip lighting out! If the weather is at all nice, stand outside, enjoy the evening sun and the views of St Mary Redcliffe

The Golden Guinea, Bristol

Nice little backstreet local spoilt only by the thumping music, which is often way too loud. usually has intersting beers, though not always well kept.
