Defoe, Stoke Newington

I highly recommend popping in on a Sunday for their nut roast - absolutely gorgeous!

The Newton Arms, Holborn

Not the prettiest of pubs but a good, old-fashioned friendly service from landlords who know their stuff. Not a very wide selection of beers, but as one of the few places that doesn't get packed with tourists and Covent Garden shoppers in this area, that's not so much of a concern as finding a nice quiet pub! That said, it can get busy when there's a football match on as they have screens up.

The Ship Tavern, Holborn

Our favourite pub in London: frequently changing guest ales, nice atmosphere, often some decent indie music in the background, fantastic food, and the friendliest staff I have ever met.

The Angel, Soho

We used to like this pub and popped in on Saturday having not been for a while. They're in the process of refurbishing and the front room looks gorgeous, but I'm afraid we won't be going back. The barman instantly took up some kind of 'attitude' the moment we went in, then my boyfriend took back his pint because it was clearly not right (very acidic, as you get from the bottom of the barrel). The barman responded by curtly saying 'Barrel's just been changed' and refused to change it (or smell/taste it for himself!). Get some staff who know their beer and we might come back!
