The Duncombe Arms, Hertford

The pub has recently had a major makeover and is now called 'The Hertford Bell'. I will do an updated review once the refurbishment is complete and I have had a chance to visit.

The Bull, Watton at Stone

Have lunch here once or twice a month following the demise of the George & Dragon. Food is generally good and there are generally three real ales on offer. Not an extensive range, but well kept.

George & Dragon, Watton at Stone

Passed the pub yesterday to see a sign announcing 'Pub to Let' displayed prominently at the front.

George & Dragon, Watton at Stone

Called in today around lunchtime as I had a little time to wait for a bus, but found the pub was closed and the door locked. Does anybody know why?

The Half Moon, Hitchin

A great pub with 10 well kept beers and good pub food - all at sensible prices. The young couple running the pub since the previous landlord moved last October on are keeping true to the spirit of the place and deserve to succeed.

Fox, Woolmer Green

Sadly The Fox closed down a couple of years ago and has been replaced by a small group of houses.

The Bull, Watton at Stone

I note that no user reviews have been posted since the re-opening ( I am excluding the review from CRC1 as this appears to be an 'insider' review).

Can anyone explain why the pub sign has been replaced by a cartoon bull?

The Swan Inn, Swinbrook

Stopped off for lunch on the way to the Malvern hills. It's not really a pub although there is a small bar area. The rest of the space is given over to dining tables and the focus is very much on food - good food, served professionally and in some style. There are several beers on hand pumps and the two pints I had were very good.

The Catherine Wheel, Arlington

If you plan to visit Bibury, make sure you walk a few steps up the road to this deightful pub/restaurant/hotel. Friendly service, good beer and nice food. Not the cheapest place we have been to, but it is the only pub in one of the prettiest villages in the country!

The Wellington Inn, Colwall

Found this place by accident and despite its size and location beside a busy road, it offered a good selection of beers at fair prices and served surprisingly good food.

30 Sep 2011 20:44

The Malvern Hills Hotel, Great Malvern

Surprisingly for a hotel, the bar serves well kept beers at sensible prices. It's a busy place and popular for its restaurant which serves a good menu at reasonable prices.

The Brewers Arms, West Malvern

A gem of a pub! Great beer and good value for money meals. An ideal spot for lunch or an evening meal after walking the nearby Malvern hills.

The Chase, Upper Colwall

A great little pub with a friendly atmosphere serving well kept beer. A little out of the way, but well worth finding! Also serves some excellent pub grub.

The Bucks Head, Little Wymondley

It's odd how few reviews have been posted - perhaps everyone is trying to keep the place a secret! It's a small and friendly sort of place with a reasonable selection of beers. Food is good from the menu or the 'specials' board.

I've been using the place for years and I am still not convinced about the conservatory extension!

The Royal Oak Hotel, Duddington

A nice pub/restaurant/hotel in a wonderfully sleepy part of the world. It's just the place to unwind with a very pleasant pint, enjoy some good food and have a post lunch coffee in front of the roaring log fire on a cold winter's day.

George & Dragon, Watton at Stone

Have used the pub a couple of times for lunches and have been surprised by how busy it can be (for a relatively small village). Nice relaxed atmosphere and good food.

The Rising Sun, Hurley

Friendly sort of place with an old-fashioned atmosphere. Food is more affordable than other establishments in Hurley.

12 Sep 2011 23:37

The Chequers, Stevenage

Used the pub for a family birthday celebration on Saturday and quite enjoyed it. There was a real ale festival going on outside so there was a good choice of ales. Food menu was quite comprehensive and service was friendly - all in all not bad for a big pub!

12 Sep 2011 23:33

The Roebuck Inn, Sixpenny Handley

Used this pub a couple of times while camping nearby. Found it to be a friendly place and relatively quiet (hence the limited number of ales on offer). The food served was excellent - plenty pf home cooked items on the menu.

The Red Lion, Welwyn

Dropped in for lunch to find that the place was really busy. Food was good and not too badly priced. There were two real ales on hand pumps and quite a wide selection of other beers/lagers in bottles or on tap. A couple of open fires added warmth and atmosphere.

Overall I would say that this is more of a restaurant than a pub, but if you are looking for somewhere to eat that serves real beer, this should be on your list.

Ely, Blackwater

We were tempted into the pub by the sign outside proclaiming "Two meals for 9.95 all day, every day" only to find that this didn't apply on a Bank Holiday Monday. Despite this setback we had a pleasant and relaxing meal in good surroundings.

Staff were friendly and attentive. Prices were OK.

If the pub had been more honest about its meal price policy I would have given them a higher rating.

The Highwayman, Yateley

Revisited the pub after six months and found that things seemed to have slipped a little - or perhaps we were just unlucky! Staff were as friendly and welcoming as ever but it took three attempts to get our drinks served (we had ordered from the restaurant table). Food was OK, but we were left with the impression that prices were higher (in total we paid around 60 for our two meals with wine).

We'll probably go back again as I'm sure the lapse in service was just a one-off.

The Highwayman, Yateley

Had a very pleasant Sunday lunch here with my wife. Food was excellent and the availability of reasonably priced real ales was an added bonus. Staff are attentive and we will certainly be going back.

With the reports of pubs around the country closing, it is heartening to see an establishment thriving. Their 'secret' seems to be to offer good food and drink at sensible prices in a friendly atmosphere - maybe other pubs should take note!

The Black Horse, Iver Heath

Called in for a quick drink on Friday evening and the place was very busy with Christmas parties. Despite this I received a friendly welcome at the bar and enjoyed a pint of Tanglefoot - even finding a quiet corner to sit in!

12 Dec 2009 11:30

Crooked Billet, Iver Heath

Had a pleasant meal with friends on Friday 11 December and although the place was very busy the service was friendly and generally efficient. Food is up to the usual standards of the Beefeater chain, but beer lovers will be disappointed with the range of beers available (I saw no hand pump beers).

I would recommend this place for a meal, but it is not the sort of establishment to drop in for a quiet drink.

12 Dec 2009 11:27

Kings Arms, Upper Upnor

Had a very pleasant lunch here on Saturday. Food was excellent and service was friendly.

30 Nov 2009 23:06

The Red Lion, Welwyn

Please note that the Red Lion is undergoing major refurbishment at present. I am not sure when it is due to reopen.

23 Nov 2009 14:36

The Plough, Datchworth

Recently taken over by new landlord/landlady, but still preserving the cosy village pub atmosphere. Greene King IPA and Abbot served.

New tenants are keen to maintain the traditional nature of the pub but will probably do some upgrading in time. Currently there are no plans to serve food, but this might change as the new management settles in.

13 Oct 2009 17:06

The Horns, Datchworth

Situated in the village of Bull's Green, this pub/restaurant is a little off the beaten track but well worth a visit. Pleasant atmosphere with a real log fire and plenty of space. The choice of beers is limited, but the Bull's Green bitter can be recommended.

A good value two course lunch is offered at 7.95 and the Horns is a popular eating place for locals.

13 Oct 2009 17:01

The Lytton Arms, Knebworth

Great range of beers and friendly service.

12 Oct 2009 16:07

The Robin Hood and Little John, Rabley Heath

Sign outside suggests under new management. Popped in for lunch during a walk and found a friendly welcome and pleasant atmosphere. Prices are reasonable and quality good.

12 Oct 2009 16:05

North Star, Welwyn

Had a meal recently - quite good value. The new decor is much brighter than before.

13 Dec 2007 23:12

The Clarendon, Chandlers Cross

I pass this pub quite regularly and it is clearly closed for some serious renovation. Any idea when it is due to reopen?

13 Dec 2007 22:58

North Star, Welwyn

Passed the pub this evening and saw a sign indicating that it will reopen on September 6th.

30 Aug 2007 20:54
