Now back to being called the Black Swan. Popped in on the 25th April. Two real ales on.

26 Apr 2015 19:41

The Olde Cross, Alnwick

This pub has been closed for a while but is due to re-open fairly soon.

26 Apr 2015 19:39

42nd Street, Whitley Bay

This place has been split into two venues. The original 42nd Street has been joined by the King George next door. Sells two real ales normally and a range of bottle conditioned real ales from the excellent Three Kings brewery. The King George is really quite small, but has recently been extended to include a pool table. The same real ales appear to be on in 42nd Street too.

8 Apr 2015 00:24

Fitzgeralds Whitley Bay, Whitley Bay

For some reason they've moved two of the real ales to the rear bar. Only occasionally pop in to see what is on. There's been a few unusual beers on the last few weeks. Always been quiet when I've gone in, even on a Saturday night.

8 Apr 2015 00:21

Douglas Vaults Hotel, South Shields

Changed its name to the Cross Arms Hotel a while back. Usually has four beers on from national brands (Deuchars, Bombardier etc.)

8 Apr 2015 00:17

The Tap and Spile, North Shields

Now down to one occasional ale. Shame, this used to be a cracking pub.

8 Apr 2015 00:13

Butchers Arms, Sunderland

Used to be the Clarendon, home of the Bull Lane brewery. Now under new management. Usually has three or four well kept ales on. Great views up the river. Worth the walk out of the city centre.

7 Apr 2015 23:28

Lorelei, Tynemouth

Seems to have given up the ghost on real ale. Used to normally have two Mordue beers on. More of an eatery than a pub.

7 Apr 2015 23:14

The Head of Steam, Tynemouth

Busy bar with up to five ales on. Beers from Camerons plus guests.

7 Apr 2015 23:13

The Spring Gardens Inn, North Shields

No longer serves real ale, though there are still two lonely handles.

7 Apr 2015 23:12

The Porthole, North Shields

Now sadly closed. Being converted into offices. Another one bites the dust.

7 Apr 2015 23:09

The Waterford Arms, Seaton Sluice

Now run by the people who used to run the Wooden Doll in North Shields. Real ale back on when I last went in.

22 Sep 2014 21:49

Riverside, South Shields

This has recently undergone a major refurbishment. More of a gastro-pub now, but still has a couple of real ales on.

22 Sep 2014 21:46

The Dolly Peel, South Shields

Now serves unusual guest ales. Last time I was in there was a Yates (Isle Of Wight) beer on. Rare for the area.

22 Sep 2014 21:44

Pow Burn, North Shields

Since the demise of the Smith & Jones pub chain a while back this has been taken over by new management. The beer range and quality has improved immeasurably with up to six beers from Wylam and Mordue breweries. The only downside is the volume of the music. You can hardly hear yourself think. The bar person said it was a 'disco' night, but with two couples and an old codger enjoying his pint it was not really appropriate.

22 Sep 2014 21:39

Lorelei, Tynemouth

Looks to have been turned into an Italian restaurant.

16 Sep 2013 22:01

The Foxhunters, North Shields

Now has two handles. Thwaites Wainwrights was on the last time I was in.

1 Jun 2013 00:15

Rosie Malones, South Shields

Now re-opened under its old name of 'The Tram Inn'. Went in last week. Six real ales on from the Marstons stable including Pedigree, Cumberland Ale and Banks Bitter. Was packed at the time (Friday night) but got served quickly and efficiently. I think this is run by the same company that runs the Alum House.

31 May 2013 12:40

Cannon Inn, Earsdon

Went in a couple of weeks ago. Very busy as there was a christening party on. Four real ales on. Service was still speedy despite the pub being packed.

31 May 2013 12:35

The Spring Gardens Inn, North Shields

Just re-opened after a re-fit. Two real ales on now, Deuchars IPA and Courage Best bitter.

31 May 2013 12:34

The Akenside Traders, Newcastle

Has served real ales for a while now from local breweries (Consett, Sonnet 43, Mordue etc.) and nationals (Marstons). Worth a look in if you're passing.

The Lane, Newcastle

Re-opens tonight as 'Pleased To Meet You', had a look through the windows, six handles on.

31 May 2013 12:26

Messrs Maguire, Dublin

No longer known as Messrs Maguires (I think they went under), but still open. Several keg brews from White Gypsy available.

21 Feb 2013 13:16

McDaids, Dublin

Cracking little bar just off the main drag of Grafton Street. Had a beer from a brewery called Five Lamps, a new one to me. It was quiet when I was in on Sunday afternoon (17/02/13). One of the most historic pubs I've been in.

21 Feb 2013 13:08

The Old George, Newcastle

Had some unusual real ales on here recently, but they need to get the drains sorted. Very off-putting when your first impression of a pub is the smell of urine.

13 Dec 2012 15:20

The Duke of Wellington, Newcastle

The Duke has been recently refurbished and given a good clean. The beer is ok, but they need to make the supply more consistent. Sometimes there's four beers on othertimes none.

13 Dec 2012 15:18

The Lane, Newcastle

Currently undergoing conversion. Will re-open soon.

13 Dec 2012 15:16

The Red House, Newcastle

Now joined to Bob Trollops as one pub. Up to 9 real ales on. Run by the same people behind the Lady Grey's pub.

13 Dec 2012 15:14

Bob Trollops, Newcastle

Has been re-vamped and joined to the Red House next door. Up to 9 real ales on.

13 Dec 2012 15:12

Duke of Wellington, Lincoln

Looked extremely closed when I passed it on Friday (07/12/12)

9 Dec 2012 19:06

The Joiners Arms, Lincoln

Definitely not closed. Popped in on Friday (07/12/12) whilst on a pub crawl round Lincoln. Its not on the local Camra guide, but should be. There were five beers on from national and regional brewers. I had the Greene King 1799 stout which was excellent. Its just round the corner from the Burton Arms (check the Lincoln Camra website for the PDF leaflet)

9 Dec 2012 18:53

The Green Dragon, Lincoln

Bugger. What's happened. Went in today (07/12/12) only three beers on. Sharps Doombar, some Batemans tat and another ubiquitous brew. Under new management. It shows.

7 Dec 2012 16:36

The Brown Cow and Dragon, Whitkirk

Had a great evening in this pub on Friday (26/10/12). We were staying the in Premier in next door (the pub is linked to the hotel). Five real ales on all well kept and not the usual national brands (beers from Naylors, Old Mill, Bowland and Great Newsome). Didn't try the food but heard reports that it was excellent.

29 Oct 2012 10:05

Prince Of Wales, Jarrow

Large open plan pub, mainly concentrating on food. Only 1 beer on (Black Sheep Bitter) but it was well kept.

26 Aug 2012 23:08

No real ale on my last two visits. I think the management has changed.

13 Jul 2012 11:48

sub-Wetherspoons chain pub. Large open plan pub with pool tables to the rear. Couple of real ales on from national brewers.

13 Jul 2012 11:44

The Magnesia Bank, North Shields

Re-opens tonight after a minor refurbishment under the ownership of Jarrow Brewery. The Maggie goes from strength to strength!

13 Jul 2012 11:42

King Johns Tavern, Hartlepool

Good Spoons. Had an excellent pint of Yeovil Ales BST with my steak & kidney pudding. The service was efficient and fast. Well worth dropping in if you're in town. Recommended.

10 Jul 2012 15:31

Jackson's Arms, Hartlepool

Popped in on Saturday 7th July. One beer on (Wychwood Hobgoblin) which was well conditioned and kept.

8 Jul 2012 21:27

The Trowel and Hammer, Lowestoft

The usual Adnams brews. Beer is kept ok but nowt to write home about.

18 Jun 2012 11:01

The Jolly Sailors, Pakefield

A couple of Adnams beers on. Food is ok, but nothing spectacular. Very busy on Saturday nights with carvery. On an un-related note, watch out for midnight. The street lights in certain parts of town are turned off!

18 Jun 2012 10:58

The Oddfellows, Lowestoft

Great pub. Very busy but welcoming. Green Jack, Adnams and Woodfordes beers available on my visit. Probably the best pub in Pakefield.

18 Jun 2012 10:54

Carlton, Pakefield

A bit scruffy (the carpet could do with replacing). The barstaff seem very keen to encourage real ale. A discount is available for card-carrying Camra members.

18 Jun 2012 10:52

The Oak Tavern, Lowerstoft

One of the better establishments in town, if a bit hard to find. Had four beers on. Tried the Elgoods and the Greene King beers which were well kept.

18 Jun 2012 10:50

The Harbour Inn, Lowestoft

Good pub on the sea front. Had two beers on from Blackfriars brewery from Great Yarmouth. Worth a visit if you're in town.

18 Jun 2012 10:48

Black Bull, Bishop Aukland

Had lunch here on Saturday 26th May 2012. Four beers on from North East breweries. Good food, though a tad expensive. Had the High House Farm Pullet Please @ 3.7% which was fine. I can imagine this place would get very busy, but was just right when we were there. Very handy for the Weardale railway.

27 May 2012 15:02

Rat Race Ale House, Hartlepool

Unusual tiny bar in the railway station. All beers served from the cask. Four beers and two ciders on. Had the Buxton Bitter, Navigation Stout and Hawkshead USPA (6%) all in excellent condition. Watch for the unusual opening hours.

20 May 2012 10:28

The Bull and Dog Inn, Hartlepool

Dropped in on Saturday (19/05/12). Friendly welcome from staff and regulars. Hook Norton Hooky Bitter on which was well kept. The pub is actually in a village called Greatham which is a few miles outside Hartlepool. One of three pubs in the village, the others being the Hope & Anchor which is next door and the Smiths Arms which is just up the street.

Hoko 10, Newcastle

Still undergoing conversion to the next Brew Dog pub apparently.

Been open for a while as OHSO. Was going to be called SOHO but another bar in the city got there first. No real ale.

27 Mar 2012 13:07

Northumberland Arms, Newcastle

Not much to see from street level. An underground pub below the Eldon Square shopping centre on Northumberland street in Newcastle. Has two or three real ales on. Food looks good too.

23 Mar 2012 13:05

The Tanners Arms, Alnwick

Great little pub in the back-streets of the town. Just been in this afternoon (10/03/12). Three beers on, Scottish Borders Foxy Blonde, Mordue Milennium Bridge and Allendale Tar Bar'l stout. Nice surroundings, proper fire. Well worth a visit if you're in town.

10 Mar 2012 17:30

The Dirty Duck, Holywood

Went here for Sunday lunch (19/02/12). The downstairs portion of the pub was really cramped, not helped by pushchairs being left all over the place. Being a Sunday it was really busy, but the staff coped well. Our food order only took about five minutes to arrive which was really good. Three ales on, the Hilden Dirty Duck and two Inveralmond Beers, Duncans IPA & Burns Ale, all well kept.

21 Feb 2012 13:32

Jenny Watts, Bangor

Excellent olde-world pub in Bangor town centre. Went in on Sunday lunchtime, the place was very busy with the lunchtime crowd. Only the one real ale on (Ilkley Mary Jane) but that was kept well. Didn't have the food but it looked excellent and the portions were generous.

21 Feb 2012 13:25

The Esplanade, Bangor

Popped in on Sunday (19/02/12) into the rear bar which is called 'Gillespies Place'. Nice enough bar, two real ales on (Ilkley Mary Jane & Hornbeam Dark & Delicious). Its a fair old walk out of Bangor town centre, so a bus or a taxi is recommended.

The Magnesia Bank, North Shields

Shut at the moment. Hopefully re-opening soon.

11 Dec 2011 12:10

Fat Ox, Whitley Bay

Went in for last orders yesterday. Two ales on Theakstons Double Cross IPA & Adnams Explorer. There was a band on in the front part of the pub, but this didn't drown out the whole pub. Worth a visit.

11 Dec 2011 11:59

Saltgrass, Sunderland

Popped in yesterday (10/12/11). Four beers on. Had the Maxim Double Maxim which was excellent. Great roaring fire to keep away those winter chills. Not very busy, but then it was a Saturday afternoon.

15 Nov 2011 13:52

Sheffield Tap, Sheffield

Excellent pub. Obviously a wide range of the brilliant Thornbridge beers on plus guests. Staff are very knowledgeable about the product they are selling which is always a plus point. Good venue to start a crawl round Sheffield.

19 Jul 2011 09:54

Free Trade Inn, Berwick upon Tweed

Of course what I really meant was Hadrian & Border Secret Kingdom. DOH!

19 Jul 2011 09:50

Free Trade Inn, Berwick upon Tweed

Great historic interior. Paid a visit a couple of Sunday's ago whilst on an exploratory pub crawl in Berwick. Had a nice half of Northumberland Secret Kingdom, so real ale does appear.

19 Jul 2011 09:42

The Green Dragon, Lincoln

Went in the other week when on a pub crawl of Lincoln. There were no Cathedral beers on but beers from Isle Of Purbeck, Milestone and Atomic amongst others made up for this. Good downstairs bar with 12 handles and upstairs restaurant with 4.

18 Jul 2011 23:22

The Jolly Brewer, Lincoln

18 Jul 2011 23:16

Willy's Pub and Brewery, Cleethorpes

Popped in for lunch the other week. One Willys beer on and a couple of others. Tried the Willys Original Bitter and the White Horse Giants Stairs which were both excellent. Honest Lawyer, Scunthorpe

Paid a visit here on Saturday 11th June. Nice narrow bar with approx eight beers on. Handy for the station.

12 Jun 2011 09:55

Ship Inn, Newcastle

This used to be one of the best pubs in the area until someone decided to rip out all the original fittings and 'modernise' it. Just look at the review on the burglars dog website. That says it all.

10 Jun 2011 13:01

Shiremoor House Farm, North Shields

Popped in the other night to see what was on. More of a food oriented place, but they had Mordue Workie Ticket, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Greene King IPA. Tried the Workie Ticket and Landlord, both well kept.

10 Jun 2011 12:51

Ye Old Elm Tree, Durham

Have to agree with previous posters. This is probably the best real ale pub in Durham, almost a brewery tap for the excellent Hill Island brewery. Worth the slog up the hill.

30 May 2011 11:49

The Spread Eagle, Preston

Went in last night. Theakstons Old Peculier & the ubiquitous Deuchars IPA were on. The Deuchars was in excellent condition.

The Grey Horse, Consett

Popped in on Saturday (28/05/11). Three Consett beers on, Red Dust, White Hot and Furnace Bitter. Guest beers included Springhead Bramley Apple & Northumberland Gold. Great pub, always a friendly welcome and attentive service.

30 May 2011 11:41

23 May 2011 13:36

The Kings Arms, Sunderland

Is it really 18 months since I visited this pub? Popped in for a couple of beers on Monday (25/04/11) to find a fantastic choice with beers from Cuerden (brewed by Bridestones), Mallinsons, Blindmans and of course Timothy Taylors Landlord amongst others. Complimentary snacks of cheese, biscuits and pickled onions were on the bar, a nice touch. If you're in Sunderland it is well worth making the pilgrimage to this pub.

26 Apr 2011 22:46

The Isis, Sunderland

Looked a bit shut when I passed on Monday. Rumoured to have been taken over by Jarrow Brewery as their Sunderland outlet.

26 Apr 2011 22:33

The Kings Head Inn, Carlisle

Great pub. Went in for a few pints and some lunch on Saturday (02/04/11). Four beers on, two from Yates & Baxter (Golden Ale & Bitter), Empire Ooh Matron & Hambleton Cocky Jocky. Had the Empire and the Hambleton which were both excellent. The food is really good too. Had the steak & ale pie. The bar staff are friendly and efficient, and the landlord is really friendly too. Well worth a visit when you're in town.

3 Apr 2011 22:21

Berkeley Tavern, Whitley Bay

Went in last night for a swift half. Got served pints. When we mentioned that we'd actually asked for halves the barperson said 'No you asked for pints'. Not only did they have cloth ears, they were arrogant with it. Even one of the other customers mentioned that we had ordered halves. Make your own mind up. Nuff said.

13 Mar 2011 10:43

Cannon Inn, Billy Mill

No longer a pub. Has been converted to a Chinese restaurant.

30 Jan 2011 12:47

The Waterford Arms, Seaton Sluice

Didn't go in here as there was no real ale available. Not encouraged by the clientele barfing over the wall either. Avoid. Much better to go to the Kings Arms or the Melton Constable nearby.

17 Jan 2011 11:50

Delaval Arms, Whitley Bay

Paid a visit here last night (16/01/11). Four ales on (Deuchars, Brains IPA, Wards Best Bitter and January Sale). Large multi-roomed pub with an 'L' shaped bar room. Fat Ox, Whitley Bay

No longer serves real ale. All handpumps have been removed.

9 Jan 2011 11:56

Open again with a new manager. Went in last Friday (08/10/10) there were five beers on namely Tim Taylors Landlord, Hardy's & Hansons Olde Trip, Greene King Abbot, IPA & Morland Old Speckled Hen. I had the IPA which was kept well enough.

4 Sep 2010 09:44

Wooden Doll Inn, North Shields

Sunday lunches back on. Generous portions, good quality home cooked grub at a good price. Went in on Sunday 29th August. The place was almost empty. This pub (and the couple running it) deserve better levels of custom.

30 Aug 2010 23:41

The Richardsons Arms, Oakenshaw

Past here on Friday (30/07/10) looks to be open again! Will post a report next time I'm in the area. A rare beast, a re-opened pub.

The gen is that the carpet will be replaced soon, as soon as they can get someone brave enough and strong enough to chisel it up!

The Five Swans, Newcastle upon Tyne

Has now closed for conversion to a Wetherspoons apparently.

27 Jul 2010 13:22

The Copperfields, Tynemouth

Cannon Inn, Billy Mill

Looks like it has been gutted for a re-furb. Closed at the moment.

7 Jun 2010 13:04

Alum Ale House, South Shields

Looking a bit dejected in the photo. Hopefully will re-open soon. Always a busy pub, I cannot understand why its still closed.

18 May 2010 15:14

The Forth Hotel, Newcastle

I have to agree with abendellis the prices make your eyes water. How can they justify charging 3.30 for a beer that is made less than 10 miles away (Mordue) yet charge less (2.70/2.80) for the Sharps Doombar which comes from Cornwall? Not tried the food but looking at the price list I'm not likely to. A good pub for a swift half before or after the train but too expensive for a session.

18 May 2010 15:09

The Salthorn, Oakenshaw

Passed by on Tuesday 4th May 2010. Pub now demolished.

3 Jan 2010 11:26

The Old Fox, Gateshead

Great little pub tucked away in the back-streets of Felling, but close to the Metro station. Landlord is a real ale enthusiast so you'll always be guaranteed a good pint.

3 Dec 2009 12:51

The Beaumont, Shiremoor

The atmosphere in here was a bit flat, as is the pub now. It's been demolished.

3 Dec 2009 12:45

Was closed for about six weeks until last Wednesday. Open again now under new management. I went in on Monday and they had three ales on Black Sheep, Workie Ticket and Bass.

2 Dec 2009 15:46

The Magnesia Bank, North Shields

I was in the Maggie Bank last night. Very quiet, but then it was 10.30 on a Tuesday. Beer range is more varied with some unusual beers on.

25 Nov 2009 16:07

The Priory, Tynemouth

Popped in last night. Now sell real ale. Three beers on. There was a lively pub quiz going on with free food available on the bar. I was impressed by the atmosphere and the friendly service from the bar-staff. I'll make this a port of call when I'm in Tynemouth.

25 Nov 2009 16:04

The Tap and Spile, North Shields

Open again. Have been in a few times. The beer range could do with being more varied, but as this is still an Enterprise Inns house the selection is fairly limited. Really needs to advertise itself more to re-gain the customers it lost whilst closed.

9 Nov 2009 13:26

O'Donoghues, Wakefield

Fantastic place. Just been there for their beer festival. Loads of unusual beers on all in good condition. Staff were very friendly. Pie & Mushy peas for 1. Couldn't ask for more. I'll be back!

9 Nov 2009 13:24

Ye Olde Fleece Inn, Kendal

Yes, have to agree with the previous posters. No real ale even though the sign says 'Cask Conditioned Ales'. Seemed to only have national beers and lagers on. Didn't stop for a drink. There are far better pubs in Kendal.

18 Oct 2009 12:03

Sawyers Arms Hotel, Kendal

Went in on Saturday (17/10/09) after the beer festival. Good condition Hartleys XB. Seems a friendly pub.

18 Oct 2009 11:52

Shakespeare Hotel, Sheffield

Currently closed and up for sale, but watch this space!

16 Oct 2009 15:58

The Tap and Spile, North Shields

Rumoured to be re-opening on the 15th October under new pub company. Will post new review when I've been in. Hopefully will be open full time now.

14 Oct 2009 11:57

The Corby Bridge Inn, Great Corby

Thwaites house with a couple of their beers on, well kept. Only visited for a swift half on a mini-crawl round Great Corby and Wetheral.

11 Oct 2009 11:59

The Queen Inn, Great Corby

A good pub. Turned up at 5.30pm just as it opened. Has a couple of real ales on Cumberland Corby Ale, Mordue Workie Ticket and Keswick Thirst Hop. Well worth the short walk from Wetheral station.

11 Oct 2009 11:55

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Wetheral

A very busy locals pub with a couple of well kept real ales on. Good atmosphere and a warm welcome.

11 Oct 2009 11:50

The Spinners Arms, Cummersdale

Visited this place on the 10th October. A friendly place with two real ales on. I had Keswick Thirst Hop which was in excellent condition. The number 75 bus from Carlisle goes right past the door.

11 Oct 2009 11:48

The Priory, Tynemouth

Now called 'The Priory' or something similar.

22 Sep 2009 15:41

The Tunnel End Inn, Marsden

I have to agree with previous posters. This is an excellent pub and well worth the walk from Marsden. The beer is excellent and the food is brilliant. I had the home made steak pie which was simply delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful. I have recommended this pub to many of my friends.

10 Sep 2009 13:57

Green Bottle, Knottingley

Went past the place a few months back and it was extremely closed! Revisited 09/09/09 and still shut.

10 Sep 2009 13:40

The Tap and Spile, North Shields

I can see a pattern developing here. Closed again.

24 Aug 2009 15:39

The Green Dragon Inn, Hardraw

Went in on Saturday after a nice walk out from Hawes. Beers from Yorkshire Dales, Theakstons, Timothy Taylors and others. Tried the Yorkshire Dales Muker Silver which was in excellent condition. Food was good but a bit on the expensive side. There is an additional charge to see the waterfall, but it is worth it.

24 Aug 2009 11:05

Monkseaton Arms, Monkseaton

Went in last Monday (17/08/09). Three real ales on, two Wylam brews and a Mordue. The beer I tried was well kept and conditioned.

The cask mark acreditation shows the quality of the beer now. I'll be back.

21 Aug 2009 13:58

The Wyke Lion, Bradford

More of a restaurant/pub than a pub/restaurant. Usually has two real ales on, the excellent Tim Taylors Landlord and 1 other. Have been here several times over the past few years, always had a fine meal. Part of the Vintage Inns group.

17 Aug 2009 16:11

The Crown Hotel, Wyke

The shutters have been removed and it is now preparing to open up under new management.

17 Aug 2009 16:07

The Woodman, Bradford

Been in here few times over the last few months. Always a good choice of real ale well kept. Well worth a visit.

10 Aug 2009 14:37

The Richardsons Arms, Oakenshaw

Closed. Has been for a while.

10 Aug 2009 14:35

The Salthorn, Oakenshaw

No longer a pub. Closed a while back. This is now being converted into flats apparently.

10 Aug 2009 14:34

The Crown Hotel, Wyke

Another victim of the credit crunch. Last time I passed this place was well and truly boarded up.

10 Aug 2009 14:33

The Kings Arms, Sunderland

Went in on Saturday (08/08/09). Excellent range of approx 8 ales on. Well worth the walk out from the city centre. One of the best proper pubs in Sunderland.

10 Aug 2009 12:03

The Ship Victory, Chester

Went in there last week. A really friendly local boozer serving well kept beer. As well as the Tetleys they also had Weetwood Old Dog. Live music was provided by one of the locals on the piano. Not very busy, but you were made to feel welcome.

5 Aug 2009 15:16

Low Lights Tavern, North Shields

Been in a few times over the past few months. Beer always kept well and some unusual beers for the area. Good atmosphere in the place and the staff are friendly and always willing to chat.

4 Aug 2009 13:47

Hugos, Tynemouth

Now re-named 'Hugo's At The Coast', went in a few weeks ago. Had two real ales on. Tends to cater for the usual Tynemouth glitterati.

4 Aug 2009 13:45

The Black Swan, Brighouse

Went back a few weeks ago. No real ale on unfortunatley so did not stop.

4 Aug 2009 13:38

Atlas Mill Brewery, Brighouse

Unfortunatley this place is shut at the moment due to a fire they had in the bar a few months back. Hopefully it will re-open in the near future.

4 Aug 2009 13:36

Wooden Doll Inn, North Shields

Opened again this week (24/06/09). The brewery now has a manager in. Went in on Wednesday. Two beers on (Cumberland Ale & Pedigree) both well kept. This used to be a cracking place, hopefully the custom is going to grow and improve.

26 Jun 2009 14:04

The Tap and Spile, North Shields

Didn't stay boarded up for long. Open again. Went in on Saturday 28th Feb. Six ales on. Under new management.

4 Mar 2009 13:06

Wooden Doll Inn, North Shields

Took my parents here for Sunday lunch a few weeks ago. Excellent qualtiy food, generous portions and helpful, attentive staff, could not have asked for more.

1 Sep 2008 15:57

The Fox and Goose, Hebden Bridge

Visited this pub over the bank holiday weekend for their Whitsun beer festival. Excellent time was had by all. The selection and quality of beer was top notch. If you're in the area, drop in for a pint, and it you're not local, make a special effort, you won't be disappointed.

28 May 2008 14:38

The Newcastle Arms, Newcastle

matt_wilkins, I'd hardly quote Newcastle as a 'desert of real ale drinking opportunities'. What about the Bacchus, Tilleys, Bodega, The Bridge, Crown Posada, The Duke Of Wellington, The Hotspur etc. Yes its not Sheffield and Newcastle does have its dodgy watering holes, but there is plenty of choice for the real ale drinker. The Newcastle Arms is a gem of a pub. Been in there many a time and never had a bad pint!

23 Apr 2008 15:23

The Allison Arms, Glasgow

Went in a few weeks back for the real ales. Only 1 hand pump left! Bar staff were friendly and welcoming but was disappointed by the reduction in the number of hand pumps!

11 Apr 2008 15:51

The Olde Ship Hotel, Seahouses

Yes, always try to visit the place when I'm in this part of the country. Decent beers adnd good hot beef sarnies! Well worth a visit.

13 Feb 2008 16:11

The Duke of Wellington, Newcastle

Sadly the Duke has gone off the boil for real alers! Now concentrates on the main national brews with few guests. Still a good pub as the beer is kept well, but lack of choice marks it down for me.

4 Feb 2008 16:25

Bourgognes, Newcastle

Thankfully!

4 Feb 2008 16:20

Richard Oastler, Brighouse

Always a starting point for a crawl round Brighouse. Beer is always well kept and being a 'spoons its excellent value for money too. Food is good and the staff are friendly and helpful.

4 Feb 2008 16:04

The Prince Of Wales, North Shields

One of the friendliest pubs in Shields. Sam Smiths Old Brewery Bitter kept at its best, a roaring fire in the bar to keep out those winter chills. Always one on my regular crawl round the town.

4 Feb 2008 15:54

The Magnesia Bank, North Shields

Had lunch with my wife in here recently. Food was top notch, served quickly and reasonably priced. Beer was a bit over-priced, and the bottled cider was extortionate.

4 Feb 2008 15:52

The Tap and Spile, North Shields

Recently re-decorated to a high standard, the Tap and Spile is back to its best. Great range of real ale well kept and at a reasonable price. Things are looking up in Shields for real ale fans!

4 Feb 2008 15:47

Wooden Doll Inn, North Shields

Went back in on Friday 1st Feb just to see what the re-opened Doll was like. Very impressive! Re-decoration has tidied the place up and the real ale is back on. Good quality pint of Jennings Cumberland Ale! Must go back to try the food. Having drank in this pub on and off for the last 25 years (including before the major re-build of the late 80's) its good to see the place loved again!

4 Feb 2008 15:43

The Pot Of Beer, Manchester

Walked past it on the way to the Marble Arch (yes it is a bit of a diversion.) place is still standing, but in need of saving. With the re-generation of the rest of the area I think it is a prime site for someone to invest in. It would be a shame to see it knocked down to make way for even more soul-less apartments.

21 Jan 2008 14:45

The Marble Arch, Manchester

What can I say. Paid my first visit there on Saturday during the winter ales festival. What a place! Cannot recommend it high enough. The beer was fabulous, the atmosphere brilliant. A really friendly crowd of beer enthusiasts, students and locals. A must visit place when you come to Manchester. The interior is unique and historic, and yes the pub slopes from front to back, something to watch out for if you've had 'one over the eight'

21 Jan 2008 14:40

The Black Swan, Brighouse

The Black Swan is now the 'Brewery Tap' for Atlas Mill beers. The pub has been refurbished to a fine standard and usually offers 5+ real ales. Well worth a visit.
