Founders Arms, Bankside

I'm with Wilko on this one. Went there on a sunny sunday with family and whilst it was full of tourists and the food and drink not exactly cheap (£12 for gammon and chips), the view and food were good, real ale selection adequate, the portions large, service friendly and efficient.

I obviously wouldn't come here for a drinking session but given it's proximity to the Tate Modern, Millenium Bridge, South Bank (including "beach" if the tides out) and slightly further afield, The Golden Hind, St. Pauls etc. i'd definitely come again with visiting friends or family if in the area and they weren't on a strict budget.

Strongroom, Shoreditch

This used to be a great pub, if you're into music and belgian beer and we used to look forward to heading here if we were ever in the area before a gig.

Unfortunately it seems to have had a mini refurb. Where in the past they had quite a wide selection of belgian ale including Chimay Blue and Delirium Red and knowledgeble staff, when i went in recently, I had to point to the actual belgian beer i wanted as the staff member had never even heard of it and they appear to have got rid of the menus.

Not sure if they still have music on downstairs or mini music festivals (there's a large outside area with seating) in summer but the food was still good. I hope when i next return they'll have restored the previous wide selection of ales amn have staff that can at least locate them.

Ty Gwyn Inn, Betws-y-Coed

Certainly the best pub we tried in the Betws-y-coed area. All but one of the pubs in the centre of town we found were hotel bars.

As mentioned below, the focus seems to be on the food, which was fabulous though admittedly on the slightly more expensive end, only tried the one (Rev James) ale but it was well kept.

About 15mins walk out of town across Waterloo bridge but well worth the trip if you want a character pub with great food.
