The Bolton Arms, Old Basing

Changed beyond all measure, and certainly for the better. Beer and food are both well above average - beer can be served in a jug glass which I feel is a nice touch.
It does have a slight problem with it's identity, as identified by a previous poster. but when so much effort and thought has gone in to making the place as pleasant as possible, I can overlook that.
Great for the very young ones, as there is a penned in Wendy House in the attractive garden.
It is expensive, yes, but frankly, you get what you pay for in this world. Transforming the Bolton cannot have come cheap, and if you want to drink somewhere pleasant rather than some depressing little hell hole then you have to pay for it.
I'm also slightly bemused about the comments re. the landlord. Despite being Scottish, he seems like an affable enough chap. He has topped up my pint unprompted after the first gulp on more than one occasion. Little touches like that keep me coming back.

Queens Arms, Basingstoke

I find it really difficult when leaving Basingstoke train station to prevent myself from going in to this pub! The beer is always top quality, immaculately kept and very fresh-tasting, and from a wide range of independent breweries. Loddon's Ferrymans Gold a particular recent treat.
The atmosphere is friendly and never intimidating, although the no-smoking section certainly brings a different perspective to the earthy quality of the main bar.
I have never eaten there, but the food always looks exceptional. They have regular specials which always sound interesting, and the menu would certainly indicate that the food is home cooked! Personally, I can't wait to eat there.

The Royal Oak, Borough

Wonderful pub. You really feel as if you have stepped back in time to a world long before chain pubs and cheap, fizzy lager. Original bar and fittings really contribute to the cosy, anachronistic feel.
Ale is excellent. I was initally reluctant to come here as I had been previously served some rancid Harveys beer throughout Sussex, but the Royal Oak has now completely altered my opinion of Harveys! I had the Armada and the Best - both excellent, very moreish!
I am yet to try the food, but the menu and previous remarks certainly make it seem very appealing!
Well worth a visit.
Highly recommended, and sadly, almost unique amongst pubs.
