Dog and Gun, Keswick

A very popular and lively pub which is great comfort after a long day's walk in the fells. 8 hand pumps on - 6 were local from Cumbria including 3 from Keswick. Keswick Landlord's Choice particularly good. If you want to try the famous Goulash then get in early as by the time I had a few beers and wanted to eat the goulash had run out - clearly very popular. Dog and Gun well worth a visit.

Bank Tavern, Keswick

Nice, warm and comfortable pub. 8 hand pumps - 5 Jennings & 3 guests. Had a very agreeable Jennings Cocker Hoop. A pity I wasn't able to stay longer to try more.

The Mortal Man Inn, Troutbeck

Stayed at the Mortal Man for 1 night at the end of November. Room was very comfortable & clean. The bar/restaurant was very busy in the evening with diners, it was a Saturday mind. However, this did not leave much room for drinkers if you did not want a table for dinner. The actual bar area is pretty small so felt a bit in the way standing at it having my pint. I did manage to sit on 1 of 2 bar stools to one side after a while so ok in the end. They had 4 ales on, all local from Cumbria, good condition and tried them all - couldn't decide between Hawkshead Sally Birkett's Ale or Loweswater Gold as my favourite. Both excellent. Took a 6 mile walk round the valley with beautiful scenery the next morning. This place is well worth a visit. Oh, be warned, if travelling up by car and using satnav, beware of huge potholes in the little lane it sends you on up to the pub - especially on the sharp right hand bend! There is a better way in as I found the next day but I did arrive in the dark.
