The Sun Inn, Hawkshead

Food is the best in the area - and it's got some competition. The beer lives up to the grub and it's got a nice friendly atmosphere. Gets very busy as it is only a small pub, but a stand-out boozer in an area that can be proud of its boozers.

The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston

One of the greatest pubs in the universe. Solid food, faultless beer, friendly staff and even its own micro-brewery. Its Old Man bitter - brewed onsite - is worth a three hundred mile round trip on its own.

The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale

Stunning scenery, a great pint. The Bluebird is (was) to be commended. Remember a fantastic black and white collie - might have lived there - that used to catch beer mats and made sure everyone in the boozer threw one for him. Cute.
