The Island Queen, Islington

Fantastic looking pub, outside and in, quiet residential location far enough away from Upper Street to avoid the hoards. Should be brilliant, but unfortunately has pretty comprehensively failed me on every visit, predominantly down to poor service, verging on plain rude, and poor internal standards. Food is so-so and half the cask ales have been off on recent visits.

The Albion, Barnsbury

Had very mixed experiences here - having lived 2 minutes up the road have visited through the seasons, pre and post refurbishments and management change. It's a beautiful pub in the most beautiful area of Islington and I've undoubtedly had some of the best lunches here sitting outside in the sun here, as well as enjoyed some great escapism on a winter's evening by the fire with a pint.

However, that has been offset by a couple of ropey experiences, mainly spoilt by poor / aloof service and the kitchen most likely being overstretched, not to mention the sometimes hoards of Islington glitterati who go to remind you that you are not in fact sat in a quaint village pub, rather one of the most expensive areas of North London! Either way, I'd recommend it.

The Narrow Boat, Islington

Increasingly keen regular here. Went in on Sunday for late lunch; despite the kitchen staff being worked off their feet, the food (fish & chips) was fantastic. Fish was moist and well cooked, and the chips crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Even the mushy peas were edible. Fantastic location though on a nice day you risk getting nudged into the canal if not careful! Still fairly small inside and upstairs not entirely full of character - though the balconies are great if you can get a seat overlooking the canal. Selection of ales was OK - two staples including Pride, plus two guest ales. Definitely recommend on a sunny day.
