please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Nice warm pub on a cold winters day and a good place for a good lunch. However, regular ale, albeit good ale, at £4.20 excludes this place from becoming a regular watering hole! Why so expensive?
ladydrinker - 5 Mar 2015 18:42
Situated about 1/2 mile from the main shopping centre. Inside the low ceilings and small windows makes it rather dark. The small lounge warps around a central bar with a very traditional decor that includes plenty of wood and a large fireplace. Seating is of the church pew type with cushions and is reasonably comfortable. There is a small patio out front and a useful shaped car park. good selection of real ales including Skinners Cornish Knocker which was very nice. Well worth a visit.

Nice friendly atmosphere in this old pub with original features that haven't been mucked about with. Pleasant barmaid served us with a smile. Lunch-time menu choices limited to about five or six items but the bacon, sausages, eggs, peas and chips that my brother and I had, went down a treat with a nice pint of Skinners Cornish ale. The Brakspears Bitter tasted flat by comparison. Will definitely visit again.
redbarrel - 18 Nov 2011 19:39
Nice attractive beamed pub, beer prices are the most expensive in Bookham unfortunately the barmaids was a bit surly and the gents toilets are really run down bordering on disgusting.

Great little pub, nice and cosy especially with the fire going. Really good food at lunchtimes, and very good value. Not sure why people are complaining about prices on here, its not as expensive as The Bell down the road. All round lovely pub.

Paid a visit early Sunday evening a coupe of weeks ago, nice interior and quite quiet when I was there. Five real ales on including Surrey Hills Sheer Drop (3.40) and Harveys Bitter (3.45) both in good condition but pricey!
cestrian - 2 Nov 2010 15:39
Great little pub, under new management. Good food at lunchtime, great chips. Will visit again soon. Might even try the quiz night.
bumble_b - 23 Jun 2010 16:42
Shere Drop, London Pride, Harveys Sussex Best, Courage Best and Directors. Shere Drop was excellent. Attractive low beamed pub with seating areas surrounding the central bar. Locals seemed friendly enough. Decent.
GuideDogSaint - 7 Feb 2010 17:06
The 3.20 is a guest bitter, the bitters start from 2.90 which is fairly standard in this area.
englishbird - 19 Jun 2009 15:19
3.20 A PINT OF REAL ALE !
Are you off your head!!!!!!!!!

I LIVED IN BOOKHAM A FEW YEARS AGO AND HAVE RECENTLY RETURNED TO FIND A FEW THINGS HAVE CHANGED. CERTAIN PUBS ALLWAYS WERE FAVORITES AND THE ANCHOR WAS ONE! ON A RECENT NIGHT OUT I SAW A DIFFERENT SIDE OF THIS ONCE WELCOMING PUBLIC HOUSE! THE BAR STAFF AND MANAGEMENT SEEMED MORE THAN A TOUCH UPTIGHT LEADING TO A STALE AND UNWELCOMIG ATMOSPHERE I WOULD ALLWAYS RECOMEND THE WINDSOR A FAR SUPPERIOR EXPERIENCE

Beer seems to be on the decline the selection of five is good but quality is always preferred over quantity.
I would rather have one well kept Ale than five bad ones.
It's a shame as this is one of my favourite drinking holes
beertoday_gonetomrrow - 22 May 2008 16:12
The Anchor seems to be losing its shine a little beers still good but not enough variation still a good local but not the best ale pub in the area
alepig - 25 Apr 2008 12:18
A nice period building.

Decent ales on tap. Coke from the can. Decent array of crisps.

Middle-aged to older crowd with the occaisional group of younger cyclists.
CaptainCrocodile - 2 Feb 2008 15:12
just heard theyve appointed a new manager yippee
good luck paul
cyclenut - 23 Nov 2007 20:34
just pray that the idiots from the Crown don't descend on this place. If they do, well, that's it for Bookham; sad really, because it was my home village before I sodded off to Canada.
slickwilly247 - 19 Nov 2007 00:19
love this quaint little pub
but when are they going to appoint a permanent manager to give it direction it needs it
anonymous - 17 Nov 2007 16:11

Just like to thank the Anchor for taking in all us lost souls from the Oak!!

LadyCroft - 10 Sep 2007 11:09
Very well kept beers - asked for a sandwich at 14:03 to be told they stop serving at 2 - not very friendly. Very popular though due to the other two pubs down the road being right tips.
anonymous - 6 Sep 2007 21:13
the headaches continue. Still love the place
slickwilly247 - 12 Aug 2007 23:25
Great place.......... great fish..........
anonymous - 18 Jul 2007 12:19
A locals pub for local people, though worth a visit occasionally. Ale generally good with the usually available guest ale, so long as it has not run out. Food not inspiring which reflects on the general ambience of the place. If busy (and not that busy as the interior is tiny) you'll have to fight for a seat / table / standing room as the interior layout is not well planned it is very old though. Landlord / owner usually efficient but I believe you'd have to be in regular attendance for some years before you'd be considered a 'regular'. Don't remark about the cooking / chips (possibly oven chips) as you may be asked to take your custom else where very English! Come on the smoking ban to make the air breathable.
nicktheflick - 21 Jun 2007 11:41
Lunched here on a crowded Wednesday - snack food was good and cheerfully served, main menu attractive, and the atmosphere friendly all round even when one of the two babies with us had a tantrum - quickly removed and soothed, but even so in some pubs would produce an unwelcoming atmosphere.. Beers well tended, and served with an eye to a full pint.
Petrel - 28 Feb 2007 18:40
I make a point of getting to the Anchor, downing a few, and braining myself on the overhead beams, whenever I am in England. Love the place.
slickwilly247 - 1 Feb 2007 00:39
Very friendly welcoming local. 2 Courage beers + 1 guest. Should be the other way around, but the pub, garden & charming staff make up for that.
MrLloydEvans - 5 Oct 2006 11:32
The Anchor continues to be an excellent village pub. Well done to all concerned.
parkhillian - 22 Sep 2006 09:05
It may be a great pub, but I didn't get a chance to try it. Who doesn't serve food on a Sunday???
andy_t - 10 Sep 2006 16:56
Nice to see The Anchor at Number One, where it belongs!
anonymous - 28 Sep 2005 11:03
I come from Bristol, but I went to the Anchor after coming down to Surrey for a wedding. Lovely old country pub.
Hernandez - 22 Sep 2005 13:00
Friendly staff, good beer (courage best esp.), and although slightly pricey, I would rather drink here than any other pub in Bookham. Really enjoyed myself here last Christmas Eve, where the locals join together for a sing-song of Slade, Podgues and other Xmas classics!
mrmolevalley - 22 Sep 2005 12:19
A nice pub. A nice selection of ales, and the lager isn't watered down. The fruit machine is generous and the locals even sing carols on Christmas Eve!
theanchor_yeah - 16 Sep 2005 18:00
Also got add that the pub quizzes are superb.
Ace001 - 16 Sep 2005 16:19
I really like this pub. Nice selection of beers and wine. The staff are really friendly. The garden is great to sit on a sunny day.
Ace001 - 16 Sep 2005 16:17
....and tuesday pub quizzes are Legendary.
Nico - 16 Sep 2005 15:43
Best pub in Surrey. Great in the Summer. And first pub on the Bookham Pub Crawl!
Nico - 16 Sep 2005 15:32
Great little pub. Best one in Bookham.
Superb in the summer when you can sit outside and enjoy the sun.
anonymous - 16 Sep 2005 14:47
If you expect Bookham to be a typical Surrey-type village, and therefore expect The Anchor to be a typical village pub, then you won't be disappointed.

A good choice for a summer's evening, and no oiks to boot. Very pleasant.
parkhillian - 29 Jun 2005 17:01
Splendidly charming and welcoming traditional pub - everything I was hoping The Bell down the road in Fetcham would be, but sadly isn't.
Highly recommended

JohnBonser - 19 Apr 2005 16:27
Small and charming, a pub with real locals!... but outragesously stuffy and smokey in winter... supposed to have an extraction system but doesn't work.
Minimal selection of real ale nowadays.
Good, well kept garden at the front for the summer.
dirc - 6 Jan 2005 09:36
Lovely old fashioned, clean pub. No children allowed in the bar, only in the garden during the summer. Has character and charm, excellent food at lunchtimes but gets busy. Great Place for a quiet drink, by far the best pub in the area.
englishbird - 6 Dec 2004 15:33
This is a proper adult pub - free house, decent beer, food at lunchtime only, tele on only when the clientele ask for it (and its tucked away)no muzak, excellent air extraction and a fire in the winter. Oh, and the staff are friendly.
Rob Alder - 14 Jul 2004 14:28
real ale never right.
gets v hot with fire and stove going.
puss in pye corner - 1 Dec 2003 12:19

we love the anchor especially tuesday night's quiz, also they do good, non expensive lunches too

Local Youth - 22 Aug 2003 16:59
It is indeed the nicest pub in Bookham. But that's not saying much as the rest are all rubbish. Friendly staff and locals and a decent pint.
Angus - 20 Apr 2003 13:50
Trip over the bar as you go in, but nice in both summer and winter. Easily the most pleasant pub in Bookham.
Matthew - 20 Apr 2003 11:29
