user reviews of the Bullers Arms, East Looe

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A largish pub with one bar as you enter off the street.

Long narrow bar for service with a few more tables set around a larger area of the room near the door.
Seems very much a locals pub at time of visit (off season) who had packed the place out and were all quite friendly. Only 2 beers on tap at time of visit St Austell Tribute..which was OK and the ever present but pretty grim (in my opinion at least) Sharps 'Doom'
Nothing really that special and seemed a bit tatty around the edges.

A tatty boozer but felt ok with it.

I had a good pint of ale in here (can't remember which one though) and generally thought the place was ok.

It was quiet early on on a saturday evening and a band was just starting to set up. Could imagine it being uncomfortabally busy in here later on and hard to get served.

Ok for a pint when quiet.

7/10

Just back from a few days in Looe and spent most of it in the Bullers! Great entertainment and friendly staff! Looking forward to my next visit.

Wouldn't go there again if it was the last pub in the world. Music too loud, played through speakers that were shot! Beer nondescript. Only thing going for it was it was wet! Very unfriendly place.

Dirty and grim. Tribute badged as Buller Brew was awful. Sour. But the look and noise coming fron blokes at the bar left us wary of taking it back. This will be one and only visit.

We only came in for some crisps and a drink on a hot afternoon.
Only one of four hand pumps were on (Cornish Knocker). Luckily though, they had four packets of crisps.
The furniture looks a bit grim, maybe that is the charm of the place.
Oh well, back to the beach.

Definitely needs a bit of a refurb but good music, friendly bar staff and decent beer.

Had a great few days over the festive period! Really busy and great fun. Would of been good to see the owners at some point but the staff keep it fun! No other pub like it in the town!!! Bring on New Years Eve!

Definately a pub to visit! Been in there on numerous occasions! Well frequented by friendly locals who obviously enjoy the live entertainment! Very friendly staff, Joe is a legend and we loved Fat Boy Fat the DJ who had the whole pub up dancing!

A popular pub that was very busy on a recent Saturday evening, possibly as a result of the singer that was on. A single room bar with a flagstone floor, the bar counter is a long narrow affair at the back of the pub. It got progressively busier as the night wore on, and by 11:15 was rammed. Maybe its the only pub in the vicinity to be still serving at that time. The bar area at the back of the pub is quite narrow, and that together with the bar stools and the frequent stream of punters visiting the smoking area and loos made it quite congested.

Beers on tap were Skinners Cornish Knocker, Doom Bar and Proper Job. Ciders were Cornish Rattler and Sharps Cornish Orchard.

Not been in for a while and was pleased to see they have tidied the place up, refurbished the bar, even the notorious toilets were presentable and the Proper Job the other night was the best I've tasted in long time.

Came in here on the rebound from the Salutation Arms just down the street.
Only came in for a quick pint - just as well because it didn't really want to make you stay any longer than you had to.
The latest few comments below sums it up. A pub with nowhere to hide.
The Cornish Knocker was the best bit in the pub - I'm talking about the beer you naughty boy.

Yes it is rough, the loos are pretty hideous and it smells a bit of dog. However the bar staff and the regulars are really friendly. I was there with 4 friends and we spent three evenings there- and I am definitely not usually a pub person. Still it depends on who you are with - definitley designed for a group of people who like a drink, handy for a pub really.

rough rough rough. but ok.......
pastyfoundit - 21 Mar 2010 01:07
oh dear. this pub was always a bit rough and ready. now it's just rough. there's some lovely people go in there, i don't want to tar everybody with the same brush, but one certain individual and two of her cohorts put a blot on our holiday.
she abused two friends of ours in the ship and was thrown out and barred from there. the fact that she spends most of the time in the bullers would stop me going again i'm afraid.
i really feel for the landlady here as how do you barr someone who's one of your best customers who provides most of your profits? i used to love this pub but won't go in again whilst this poisoned little individual goes in there.

On hoiday in the area . Bulers advertised 4 real ales on outside board. I was served a pint of cornish knockers with the comment 'they are all a bit flat today but taste ok' Well it didn't taste ok and I didnt stay for another. Pub grubby, toilets terrible.
roblord - 10 May 2009 21:09
Betty Stogs was ok, pub in general quite dirty
skinnersbeer - 24 Feb 2009 20:53
I think lbw is well and truly taking the pi** as well as talking aobut it a lot. See his comments on the fishermans too, raving looney or a local with a grudge?

They don't have any toilets just a series of stinking, floating cess pools. You walk into the lavatory and you take your life into your hands. You can surely catch all manner of life threatening organisms just by touching the door handle on the way out. There was p*ss and s**t all over the urinals and these were overflowing with paper and other things. On the seat there was what looked like bogies and vomit. I felt so sick I left my drink and went to the pub next door to wash my hands.

I counted 14 dogs all around the place. They were chasing round like they were on the moon or something! By the bar it's so narrow that every time they ran by chasing up and down they nearly took the legs from under me. They are a dirty health hazard and could bite the face off a child if overexcited one day! I was only lucky none of them had had a toilet accident on the day I was there. They need to tether them up out the back away from normal people. Let the smokers have them, they smell already and I don't want to smell like that on holiday thank you very much!

Got to say we have always enjoyed this pub on our trips to Cornwall, but it seems to have gone belly up. We tried the betty stoggs and found it tasting rather wet dog than ale. Pub ok, never will be sumptious but the toilets were awful, wet through and off putting when you can hear and see the smokers outside as you pee. worrying that they may see you too!
irishcream - 3 Nov 2008 22:27
Avoid at all costs. My seadog ipa was almost as bad as my girlfriends cloudy cider. Abysmally kept beer. Decent range of ales but what is the point when they taste as bad as that?
spookyhead - 12 Sep 2008 21:46
Without having any GBG entries for Looe it was a bit more of a mystery. This pub was selected by the girls in our group as they read that it was haunted. I was pleasantly surprised as four hand pumped ales and a real cider. I guess it is a free house by the selection. Available on Friday were Sharps Doom Bar, Skinners Betty Stoggs, Keltek King, Seadog India Pale Ale and Addlestones Cider. The Keltek King was rather tasty and in good form. My partner however was not impressed with the barman's swearing and seeing how the coffee cups were washed.

A bit rough round the edges but very friendly, lively and beer spot on. Recommended.
dagenhamdave - 22 Jul 2008 17:11
Along with the Fishermens this is a proper pub.
The good, the bad and the ugly all in one place.
Great night out.

liverpoolou - 25 Jun 2008 22:14
Great beers. get there early Friday and Saturday nights if you want a seat as gets very crowded. No longer does food as far as I know.
cornishcream - 13 Jun 2008 20:50
We visit the bullers every time we go to Looe. We love Skinners ales. Good live music and good bar service. Take it for what it is and enjoy.

I lost my stoggs shandy for nearly half an hour but it was a great flavour. I saw my wife go off with a man with long hair into the back for a laugh it is a friendly place I think. You have to stand outside a toilet alley and a chinese slaughterhouse to have a smoke but if you ask me it is OK all in all. They played music then a man came in with hair and a guitar and he played something and it was relly loud at times. I didn't see any of this sawdust that other people have mentioned but there were sandcastle buckets hanging from the ceiling and one of them was full of water and fell onto my lap. I don't know if that was a Cornish practical joke or something else. (It was raining outside and inside which I didn't understand.)
There were some dogs in the pub but they were not noisy and did not try to bite me or my wife. Some people got drunk and I was nearly one of them. The toilet itself was very wet, I recommend taking wellington boots on a visit if you plan on going to the toilet at all. I heard that this pub is haunted and there are a lot of ghosts all over the place including a girl child with her neck missing and a few dead smugglers and various men. I did not see any ghosts as far as I know but I don't think you can always tell with the supernatural.
I would give this pub 8/10 overall, the beer was nice and it was funny.

Of all the pubs in Looe that my partner and I enjoy when we visit, this is the one we love the most. A real pub, with good beer, music and fantastic eclectic company! You can keep your plastic "fun" pubs, we'll stick with places like the brilliant Bullers. Can't wait to get back next year!
rob69 - 24 Sep 2007 18:02
one of my all time favourite pubs. can't wait to get in here when we come on holiday. it's so friendly and welcoming. we played about 3,000 games of pool last time we were in there. sure, it's a bit spit and sawdust so if you're looking for champagne and caviar, give it a miss. but if you want a proper pub......
mph - 17 Nov 2006 13:29
Can I have a bag of sawdust with my pint of spit?
The main room was shrouded in a dark malevolence, so everyone cramped against the bar to drink their beers which were pretty good! - as were the live band. Everyone seemed happy and well drunk. Decent pub for a drink or two.
