Real ale and pizza - what's not to like and this is certainly a place to spend a few hours. Many of the beers are from the Ossett Brewery and are no doubt superb although I had a scintillating half of White Rat from Tadcaster's Rat Brewery - the best beer I tasted on this trip to the Minster city. LCD Soundsystem were on the stereo and portraits of Victorian worthies deck the walls. My only quibble was over the pizza which was just fine but no better than that.

Straight opposite the Blue Bell and it was in The Hop for a re-visit, having been here at Easter for the 1st time.

11 ales and 2 ciders on the cask and keg, I had an extremely good pint of the rather odd After Rat Mint @ 5.2% from the Rat Brewery, plenty of mint and strong taste in this pint!

Barely any standing room and certainly no seats available, there was also a queue for the pizza restaurant part of the bar. Musicians were setting up for live music while the trendy staff poured ales and presented lovely looking pizza’s.

I like the Hop, the wife is less keen but the ales are aplenty and well-kept and I like the older crowd that it attracts.

Scores highly again from me.

This large Ossett Brewing Co run bar was the remaining pub in York from the current GBG that needed ticking and what a cracker it is.

The double fronted glass entrance on Fossgate leads to a stunning interior that needs to be seen to fully appreciate it. There's lots of light towards the rear, original tiles on the walls and floor and some pretty amazing art nouveau style chandeliers hanging over the bar. The interior is stunning!!

On my visit there were 11 ales on of which 2 were craft, also had 2 real ciders on. Great to see that all of the ales were from Yorkshire breweries. To start with I had a pint of Huddersfield's Rat Brewery Rat Trap @ 4.0% then followed that up with the White Rat @ 4.0%, both very good ales.

Really busy as it was Easter Sunday, the back was busy with families and couples enjoying the pizza’s on offer. The wife and I stayed here for a couple of hours, the atmosphere was buzzing, music played quite loudly and the beer was cracking.

A great place to visit for a couple of drinks, pizza or just to see the décor….get’s a 9/10 from me!

Following a visit to the House of Trembling Madness (a hidden gem that I will request to be added to the site), we moved on to the Hop. This is a real ale bar/pizza restaurant. I believe it used to be solely an Italian restaurant. But it has obviously diversified. The tiled front room gives way to a much larger rear area where most people eat and where the pizza oven is located. The pub is an Ossett pub. So you will find a typically good selection. On Saturday evening it was Brass Castle Mosaic, Treboom Yorkshire Sparkle, Allgates Gidlow Mash, Rat White Rat, Ossett Yorkshire Blonde, Big Red, Silver King & Excelsior & Burton Bridge Bramble Stout. Cider was Apple County Naughty Horsey & Glebe Farm Side-R with Elderflower. We stayed here for a few and tried the pizzas, which are very tasty. The pub is clearly popular with large groups who can congregate around the long tables. Toilets are upstairs. Recommended.

Consistently good city centre boozer, superbly renovated from an old game dealer's shop. Excellent range of Ossett beers on tap - plus various extras from the group of smaller breweries (Fernandes, Rat, etc.) that Ossett distributes. Constantly well-kept beers (including stout and porters during summer months which in itself is meritworthy), kegs of interest (if you're that way inclined) plus always intriguing ciders and perrys. A proper drinking parlour with a pizzeria towards the back. Offers CAMRA discount Sunday-Thursday. Long climb to the lavs.

One of York's best two pubs... and that's saying something.

Very good pub, always has a good selection of real ales, it has a pizzeria inside with quality pizzas at fair prices.

It has live music on Saturdays and often gets very busy
