So Shorty, you have been to many pubs in Guildford but the ONLY review you have ever left is this one....hmmmmmm.......next!
beergibbon - 5 Aug 2009 14:47
I have never laughed so much at some of these comments. Most are blatantly written by people who haven't been to this pub in years! I visit alot of pubs in Guildford, but this is by far the most friendly. The staff are fantastic and the regulars are welcoming. It's perfect for a quiet drink during the day and very lively in the evenings at weekends. The food is fab and at a very good price. It is also homemade, which very few pubs can claim these days.
The landlady has worked hard to turn this pub around and has done a damn good job!!!

Graham78 it`s all gone quiet after the landlady shouted at us,i do hope the dart & pool teams are up and running now and theres not too much swinging going on (in the trees i mean) !!
Happy new year.

I went in recently on a Sunday evening as the Astolat is closed at the moment. It wasn't my first choice destination, but I had heard some positive things about the change over from The Weavers. It seemed OK, but I only stayed for a pint as I was driving. If you're looking for a period building, with bags of character in a bucolic setting, look elsewhere. If you're looking a for a pint, there are worse places to go. There are also better, but I've known worse.

Looking forward to the ongoing wrangle between graham78 and the BITE world.

GOOD EVENING TO ALL, I'M THE CURRENT LANDLADY AT THE 'APPLE TREE', GLAD TO SEE THE PUB IS CAUSING SO MUCH DEBATING. GUILDFORD IS A GREAT AREA FOR GOING OUT FOR A DRINK, AND WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE SO MANY LOVELY WATERING HOLES. ALL I WOULD LIKE TO ADD IS THAT THE APPLE TREE IS POSITIONED ON A LARGE ESTATE, AND ESTATE PUBS ARE SO VERY DIFFERENT TO TOWN CENTRE VENUES OF WHICH WE COULD NOT POSSIBLY COMPETE. ALL I DO ENSURE IS THAT TO ALL CUSTOMERS NEW AND OLD, MY PARTNER JOHN, ALL THE STAFF AND I WILL AIM TO MAKE YOUR VISIT AS ENJOYABLE AS WE CAN. XX

Louise82, Graham78 and garethhanna seem to me to be the same people. If you read their reviews they are all written in exactly the same style, with some very similar minor spelling errors. And Louise82's unsubtle attempt to NOT look like a newbie by giving the Royal Oak a one line review five minutes before praising the Apple Tree is pretty laughable by all accounts. I wish people would stop doing this, it is so obvious. Cue a new user leaving a review of the Apple Tree written completely differently.....

As for my review of the pub.......I cannot give one but I can comment that I would not go there because of it's location, which is as good as a review for people not from Guildford searching for a pub to visit. I have lived in Guildford for 25 years and have never been there nor wanted to go there. If you are from out of town, head into the centre of Guildford for food and drink, there are plenty of reviews of other pubs on here.

It is good to hear that the new landlord/lady are making an effort to turn the pub around though and all the best to them.

Greetings also to beersupper, biker and giveusabeer who seem to be fellow regular contributors to the Guildford pub scene.

Neil

been in a couple of times since moving to the area while at uni. The area isn't as bad as all that - although I did have my reservations!!
The staff are great, very friendly and great service. Good for a quite drink during the week, and fab for drinking at the weekend, glad to see entertainment is back on. I popped in last year, but was quiet and entertainment had been stopped. New decor - nice cosy sofas and re decorated - it makes a hell of a difference - and the garden this year is the best i've seen it since coming to Guildford - keep up the good work. Lou

Sorry, for comments if they offend, like I say, pop in for a beer its a friendly pub all im trying to say is the bad reputation its been tarnished with in the past is now spoiling a good pub thats changed. The reason theres no pool team or dart team at the mo is because the new league for both starts in October, so please note there is a dart board and two pool tables. Your right, it is mainly a locals pub, attracting some students as well from the area, but to slate a pub for where it is is bad - im sure the landlady (if i got away from sniffing her apron) would love to surround her pub with lovely apple trees!!, and no, im not tagged!! I just think that with the current times its our duty to try to support pubs, I dont think some of you relise that the comments you make could really damage the trade of some pubs and therefore aid in there closure, so I think comments should only be made about resent trips to that particular venue? But fair enough with the say it as it is. As for the scores on the doors, I have no idea when the next inspections are, I spoke to the landlord today who insisted he spoke to the enviromental health about six months ago when he took over to go to the pub to help advise him on the kitchen re-furbishment, but no one got back to him. I'll insist to him that you would care for a new inspection!! So now please go easy on me, I feel its me against the world on here!! lol

It`s funny how when you catch someone out on this site they get all shirty and holier-than-thou ( won`t be writing again i`m above all this )B`lloks.Take it on the chin like a man.
So graham78 i note theres not a team there at the Moment ( popular pub is it ?)
And as giveusabeer comments only people from Park Barn estate would ever use this pub.
Also please note i wish the new guys all the best and certainly do not wish to see any pub close.
Hope to see the ratings go up if its inproved that much.
Beersupper - 18 Sep 2008 21:09
Hmmm graham78 sorry to here the dart board has gone along with the pool table coz in my view thers no reason whats so ever of visiting this pub now,or has the location changed and its now got pleasant surroundings with a lovely view possibly lots of apple trees ???.
This pub caters for the locals and only the locals as no one would travel into the middle of an estate (unless lost, certainly not a person that knows the area) to visit this pub.
Don`t try and make out this pub is something its not thats not what this site`s about, it`s as Biker says "say it as it is".
I also notice you don`t drink or eat in any other pubs i would suggest you get out more (unless of course your tagged) and stop sniffing the land ladys apron. 2/10

To Beersupper, what a mindless comment to place, like I say, haven't been there for years have you? Since theres no dart or pool team there at the moment - hard to have an away game at the Apple tree Im afraid!! Oh well, shows your true colours, the reason theres more activity around this pub at the moment is because the link is posted on the apple tree webpage. With the recent festival there, im sure everyone's on it looking at the pictures posted on there. Well, Ive had my say, its great, fantastic pub, YES it does keep the locals happy (sorry if our existance is a pain for you, just think, if the pub shut like you hoped, we might all scatter for miles and end up ruining the pubs you do like - if any?) yes it does do the best Sunday roast in Guildford - unlike some, I dont like to exagerate to much, so Guildford will do - I haven't eaten in every pub serving sunday roast in Surrey so im not a liberty to comment on pubs I haven't visited recently. Well, I've done what I wanted, placed a good comment about my local, dont feel the need to play your petty games commenting back and forth, so please feel free to slate the pub as much as you want to, i wont reply. Finally, if you pop in within the next decade, ask for Gra, I might even buy you a beer. Bring Biker with you and maybe, just maybe you might enjoy yourself!! By the way, I mean no offence, just letting you know the pubs great, and my mum always said, if you cant say anything nice ....
graham78 - 15 Sep 2008 23:30
To Biker, I dont mean to offend but when did you have a relative in Linkway? You refer to visiting back in 'those' days, dont suppose you've visited The Apple Tree? Or in your vocab does 'those days' mean 'within the last year'? As for your comment on research, you may note that the 'scores on the doors' published in late 2007, were actually carried out during Sept-Dec 06 - read up on them? so, what score shall I give you on research? Everyone has there right to there opinion, I can assure you I thought the same about this pub 5 years ago, but honestly, since the pub was sold to new owners its really improved. Just pop in for a pint and your see, but if you do, dont hold your previous bad experiances against them.
graham78 - 15 Sep 2008 23:13
I don`t know how long you`ve known this pub graham78 but i have been going on and off for 30 odd years playing darts and pool for different pubs so get your facts right before spouting off.
Good if it has recently changed, but the best sunday roast thats a boast but then i read it again and you say "IN" Guildford not much competition there.
Beersupper - 8 Sep 2008 13:53
To Beersupper and Biker, its quite obvious from your postings that neither of you have actually made the effort to go for a drink in this pub, so how you can possibly comment I dont know? As for the food 'scores on the doors', they, i believe were conducted before the new tenants took over, so I feel it unfair to tarnish there great efforts with this pub with old news. I assure you if you go in there you will note a great change for the better, its clean, friendly, comfy, fairly priced and serves the best sunday roasts in Guildford!!

Visited this pub (now called the Apple Tree by the way) on Saturday evening to watch the England football game. Friendly atmosphere, comfortable furnishings and quick service.
beerywilf - 7 Sep 2008 21:11
The only thing amazing about this pub is its still open.
Still it keeps the locals happy.
Beersupper - 5 Sep 2008 15:54
this pub is amasing. I was there at the bank holiday weekend when they had a wicked festival, with live bands, a parachute jump, and much much more.

Please go to this pub if you get the chance, you cannot fail to be impressed!!!
garethhanna - 2 Sep 2008 09:26
On a par with The Royal so don`t bother calling here.
