Interesting old pub, with friendly staff and customers. Good to hear it's open again. Old fashioned, with newspapers kept for customers.

Used to be a good pub but gone downhill. Rude staff and generally unfriendly feel to the place.

I know the Stag becuase I have played a few gigs at this pub.

The Stag and Hounds - as of 2012 - been taken over by the same team that run the Mothers Ruin pub in Bristol. Similar kind of feel but bigger Pub, lots of room downstairs plus a maze of rooms and corridors, open air smoking patitio (with seats and tables) plus a function room upstairs.

Holds regular music nights, from Open Mic nights with Bristol legend Howlin Lord to full touring bands and local support bands. Not yet over-crowed but steadily getting busier and busier since it reopened.

serves food - burgers and ciabattas, snacks etc., holds quiz nights - And I think is a free House.

Another pub that has been shut for a while, but now re-opened. Hopefully it will have better luck this time, although it was quite quiet on a recent Thursday evening visit. Its a few years since Ive been in here so Im unsure how much has changed, but it doesnt obviously appear to have been refurbished.

Inside its one long open room, although wood partitioning does break up the space somewhat to give the feel of different bars. The colour scheme is somewhat gloomy with dark green paint on the walls and black paint on the ceiling. A single matching green sofa was in front the large fire-place, other than that the furniture was mostly conventional tables and chairs. There was also some wood cladding on the wall at the far end, and a couple of stuffed animal heads (a stag and a fox, appropriately) on the wall. A raised area in one corner looked as though it got used by bands on occasions as there was some equipment dotted around.

There is a small roof terrace which is an unusual feature, and I imagine this would be a bit of a sun trap. No views unfortunately though, other than a small railing through which you can see the Temple Way roundabout! There is also an open mic night on Tuesdays.

Beers on offer were Doom Bar and Black Sheep, both of which were reasonably priced at 2.80. Ciders were Addlestones, Magners and Thatchers Gold.

Well, it re-opened early 2011 and then a couple of weeks ago curtains went up around the ground floor and the doors locked. There has been some activity in the last couple of days, so it could well be open again soon?

Enterprise Inns have this place on the market (again) as well as the sign from another agent on the side of the building.

What a shame the last couple went!!!! They seemed to care about the place at least!!! Was nice to see a friendly face and be served a good beer! So what now??? how sad

Shut with sign announcing pub up to let by Enterprise when I was on a crawl in the area on 28th Dec 2010.

On the market (yet again) and I guess it will join the rest of the pubs in the area that share a common theme?

Pretty much as the previous poster has said - Otter and Gem on tap and the Otter was in tip top condition. Leather seats and wood, huge screen showing the rugby. Agree about the dreadful music, but at least not offensively loud. Also selling pie minister pies for the diet conscious.

My brother stopped in during our annual pilgrimage from the USA. We were looking for real ales we hadn't sampled before and found Otter Bitter and another called Gem. Both were nicely kept and the place seemed pleasant enough. We stayed for a couple of pints before moving on. The only thing that pushed us out was the insipid hip-hop soundtrack coming through the audio system.

Haven't been there for a while but it always been ok. Doom Bar and Timothy Taylor Landlord on tap when I've been there.

My friends father in law came over from Poland and we went there last year. They only went and ran out of vodka! And it was a Saturday evening!

Pubco-expensive refit that is pleasant but uninspired. Historic building, but not quite there.

Medieval interior, beer was fine (including ale) but nowhere near enough seats. Puzzlingly it was closed when I attempted to visit one Friday evening. There are picnic tables outside.

Promised a lot more than it delivered. Only one ale on (Doombar) which wasn't in great shape.

Inside is pretty big (and there's plenty of scope the do a Gordon Brown upstairs).

Empty, even though the England rugby match was on - I did go on a Saturday, so perhaps missed out the really busy time during the week.

Perhaps worth a quick diversion, but won't be making a big effort to go back.

Busy quiz night last Friday. Asked barman what ales were on, answer 'Guinness, that's all'. Moved on. Curiously, smoky atmosphere.
curioushistory - 25 Feb 2008 00:05
A very decent pint of doombar on tap here, very nicely done up too. 7/10
