user reviews of the Chequers, Bungay

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This was probably the liveliest of 10 we visited in Suffolk yesterday. An accordionist playing Christmas carols helped to swell the crowds. At 5pm, it was standing room only. Beers available were Wolf Golden Jackal, Fullers London Pride, Greene King IPA, Hopback Winter Lightning and Hardy & Hansons Rocking Rudolph. The locals and the staff were fairly friendly. Although getting to the bar was difficult. The pub is one single bar split into separate drinking walls. Certainly the best pub we tried in Bungay.

Visited on a Wednesday night and there were five ales on offer: Buffey's Norwich Terrior, Woodforde's Mardler's Mild and Sundew, Fuller's London Pride, Adnam's Best. Terrior and Sundew were is good form and the barman was welcoming. Other than our group the pub was empty which was surprising given the number of well kept ales they had on.

sadly this pub is not what it once was, we manage to visit it once or twice a year, and on the past few visits it has gone downhill fast, only a couple of beers on, not the veritable beer fest that it once used to be, landlord(grumpy) was the only person in there, quality not that good, all in all a sad loss leaving the "Green Dragon" to now carry the mantle as Bungay's top real ale pub.

Shed load of real ales, (usaully 8 or 9), Woodforde's, Adnams and other more 'fringe' beers, all well kept. Very friendly place, I go once a year and they still remember me. Often has a beer festival in Summer. Hub of the real alwe universe in Suffolk.
