Wheat Sheaf Public House, Farnham

Completely changed since the last review. Now a very good gastro-pub serving excellent beers and other drinks. Food is very good but a higher standard and price than a regular pub (waitress service etc) Nice choice of cask ales as well as bottled beer and some craft keg beer. Part of the Red Mist group which includes Duke of Cambridge in Tilford and Queens at Dogmersfield.

Queens Head, Farnham

This pub is the best in Farnham now. The excellent young management have blended all ages and all types. There are locals and students. Beer is superb and the food spot on. This was Fullers pub of the year for 2013 and given the extremely high standards their pubs set that is a fantastic achievement.

The Sandrock, Boundstone

Excellent combination of local beer house and fine food. Definetly not a gastro pub but food is real quality. Don't have a Sunday lunch starter - the main courses are so huge (especially the lamb) your stomach won't thank you.
The highest point of the pub though is its beer range. Go any evening and treat yourself - usually 7 or 8 cask beers that change often.

The Albion, Farnham

This is an odd one. In evenings it does have a youngish clientele but "hood-rats" is a very harsh way to describe them. Maybe "young people" is more appropriate. Certainly not badly behaved in my experience.
The food is good and I completely recommend the Sunday lunch carvery which is really good vfm and high standard too. They do seem to have a problem with the beer. Only one of the handpumps was on and despite the badge saying GK IPA I was told it was London Pride (in a Greene King pub???)
It was very good but seemed an odd situation. Decor in this pub is superb - a really high spec and staff are friendly and helpful. I hope it does well

Lovely young couple making a real go of this place. Gets real busy on Saturdays - food is good and beer excellent. Staff are very cheerful

The Nelson, Farnham

Went for Sunday lunch for third time in four months. Staff are great - cheerful and breezy but food arrives promptly and its very high quality. It isn't cheap mind but there you go.... Gravy was a bit salty but meat etc was excellent quality.
Beer is superb. I have had Reverend James and Deuchars IPA here and always good - served with a head (sorry but Northerners need that!!)

I really like the atmosphere in here and its pushing Hop Blossom for best in Farnham centre

The Hare and Hounds, Rowledge

very nice pub and food is excellent but not very well supported by the beer drinkers of Rowledge!

The Sandrock, Boundstone

a lovely pub. Brilliant cask beer range and friendly staff. Wish it was on my doorstep!!! keep meaning to have some food (as it looks great and wins awards) but never got off the ale yet.

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

I'm not saying you're wrong train man but I was there last Friday afternoon and there were 8 beers on. Because they only have (I think) 4 pumps in each room they "double clip" each pump so if you look closely you can see 7/8.

I had Caley Deuchars and Harveys last week - SPLENDID

The Jeremy Bentham, Bloomsbury

Well I liked it and the outside is a nice, relatively quiet place to sit. Beer is really good and a good choice.

5 Jul 2008 15:26

Horse Guards Inn, Petworth

The good news is the female staff are very nice to look at and pretty good at what they do. Also the Harveys Sussex is absolutely superb. The bad news is that the food prices are absolutely mental. 12.50 for a plateful of Sunday lunch- are you mad? This is a pub in a small village up a dead-end, not Claridges guys!!!!!

5 Jun 2008 13:51

The Jolly Farmer, Blacknest

very good service and pretty good beer. Great garden.

Food worth a try

The Ball and Wicket, Heath End

Hadn't been in for ages and I am generally suspicious of "brewpubs" since tiny volumes often compromise quality. However I have to say I was really impressed with the ale. Mike Hawthorn @5.5 is a bit strong for summer but the William Cobbet @4.5 was superb and the Bishop Sumner at 3.8 was also excellent and didn't suffer for coming after x pints of 4.5!
really hope the on-going refurb works for this pub. Hale could do with a real quality pub - not occassional flashes in the pan.

Lowlander, Covent Garden

Don't bother going unless its to eat AND drink beer. If thats your plan then its well worth a visit as the range is superb and food informal and nice too. But not really a prop up the bar for a quick beer sort of place.

The Bridge End Inn, Ovingham

I haven't been for 15 years and still pine for the day I'll go back... Happy memories ... Is it still owned by James Outterside?

17 Apr 2008 18:10

The Fire Station, Waterloo

The food is usually good but its just soul-less to me. Like drinking in a hotel lobby. Ale is actually OK quality but probably not what you've gone for. Everyone is trying to be ferociously trendy drinking Paulener. Outdoor smoking area fumes just blow straight through the stupid huge doors and its like being back in an episode of "Life on Mars".
Price check 2 x pints Pedigree and 1 x Sauv Blanc (250ml) - 12.50 ... harsh

17 Apr 2008 18:02

The White Hart, Waterloo

Been a few times and it could be so much better. Simply no need for SO many lagers on sale. I counted 9 on draught ! Bar staff were comically useless and dumb to boot. If you expect me to pay nearly 4 for a gin and tonic don't you dare then argue the to$$ when I object to the RED HOT glass you served it in!!!! BTW the pub looks nowt like the picture above. It now has much more modern signage etc and actually better for it.

17 Apr 2008 17:56

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

Well I like it - but then I had just come from the Fire Station which is one of my all-time detest places. Beer was good, staff not bad at all and pub packed. Nice to have a pub not full of panhandling Jocks and Scousers close to a major London station

17 Apr 2008 17:50

Whitelocks, Leeds

Very Harry Potter. Suitably dingy, grimy and odd. Good beer range and good quality. Bar maid must have had a bad day as she had a face on her like a smacked trout. Apart from that well worth a visit.

17 Apr 2008 17:45

Ye Old Mitre, Holborn

A hidden gem
Loved it. Great staff and superb beer

17 Apr 2008 17:41

The Fox and Goose, Greywell

New licensee that has only made it better. Top spot and still good food. Staff are smiling now (and looks like the customers are to)

9 Apr 2008 17:28

The Alma, Heath End

oh dear oh dear.......

9 Apr 2008 17:26

The Slug and Lettuce, Farnham

I really liked the Slug, but watch out for how it changes! At 7.30 on a Friday it was mostly people eating and quite quiet. Went back at 10pm and it was rocking - full of 20 somethings. The staff are excellent, even offered us table service just for drinks when it was quiet. (maybe I just look old and decrepit?) Good, polite door staff as well. Apparently a good pint of real ale I'm told - which surprised me. I stuck to Becks Vier to avoid the risk.

12 Mar 2008 18:20

Wellingtons, Farnham

That isn't a photo of the pub either!

12 Mar 2008 18:12

The Six Bells, Farnham

Glad to see you're all right. Charming young couple running it and back to the standards it once had. Got to get down there for a sunday lunch now....!

12 Mar 2008 18:08

The Six Bells, Farnham

I'd be interested to know how this pub is faring now. Comments already posted sum it up. It was good and then it was run by totally incompetent buffoons. A-Boards proclaim "new owners"?

29 Oct 2007 11:04

The Fox and Goose, Greywell

The only thing missing from 852's review is that the pub does serve terrific food as well! Staff could smile a bit more and it would be a ten out of ten.
Go for a walk down the Basingstoke canal (lane just across from the pub) that gives you a thirst/appetite!

22 Oct 2007 21:13

The Waterwitch, Odiham

bbmatt has been misled. The pub was a toilet before it was bought and turned into a chef and Brewer. No queues to eat in those days! Some of the food can be a little bland (Roast Pork sunday lunch) but generally its good quality and good portions.

22 Oct 2007 21:11

The Salisbury, Leicester Square

Great pub and like topdog andy says whats wrong with a few Yank tourists? They realise a special place when they see one. This is superb. Brilliantly run by the way (check out how every mirror shines every session of every day - thats no accident)

22 Oct 2007 21:04

The North Bar, Leeds

A very special place for people who know that great beer does not have to come out of a handpull! Some great bottled and draught beers (many of which I can't pronounce - but they taste good)
Well done to the landlords for being so bold.

22 Oct 2007 21:00

The Alma, Heath End

Hotlegs is 100% right. Simon and Sue are doing a great job. Its both a great pub and a centre of the community. Only shame is its so small! Beer excellent, food superb. Jamaican BBQ a triumph and Bonfire night coming up!

22 Oct 2007 20:55

The Lobster Pot, Farnham

If you want to treat yourself you can do a LOT worse. Food is brilliant and fish is amazing (better than Loch Fyne!).
Nearly all the staff are from overseas, they are all unfailingly very cheerful and very efficient. Nice bar if you just fancy a quiet, classy drink as well

22 Oct 2007 20:52

Dog Inn, Whittington

Great pub with brilliant staff and very high standards. Beer, wine or food - any combination you can't go wrong. Seems to be an oasis of Adnams and Greene King, 100 miles from Suffolk (no complaints!)

22 Oct 2007 20:48

The Coach and Horses, Farnham

I completely disagree with the other reviewers! The Coach is smart and clean, The bar staff are always cheerful and chatty. The beer and tapas are good (admittedly not cheap)Weekend Door staff are a necessary evil. This is a bar rather than a pub.

22 Oct 2007 20:41

Queens Head, Farnham

If you are very, very, unlucky you can meet some nasty people in here. But generally a good boozer with "characters" (but not intimidating) still selling HSB despite now belonging to Fullers

22 Oct 2007 20:38

The Hop Blossom, Farnham

Its not complicated is it. Good beer, good atmosphere. Pleasant staff in a cosy building. Only down side is it can get TOO busy...
