The Boathouse Tavern and Grill, Dawlish Warren

Vinnie, Vinnie, Vinne, I see you've let the familiar beer in the evening paranoia get the better of you. No I am not the manager, I holiday in Dawlish two or three times a year.

If you'd been to the Boathouse you would know that the dog bowl is in the outdoor seating area!!
Please write a subjective review "based on merit" rather than just a retort so that we can discontinue this pointless excercise. I think my theory that you have never actually been there is gaining more credibilty by your every comment!!

To address Alex's point, i have been in the majority of pubs in the Dawlish locality and the Boathouse is by no means the best...... but there are far, far worse. but of course, people are entitled to their opinion.

Hi Vinnie, the only person missing the point here is you. Alex however, does make a good point regarding genuine reviews. Why would I bother to "check your other reviews". You have left two unspecific comments about the Boathouse, but are yet to write an actual review.

The Boathouse is what it is, I don't think anyone is expecting it to get a michelin star, but for a cheap meal and sit down after a day on the beach I have found it acceptable. I call that being realistic, not "easily pleased". If other people have not found this the case, fine, write a review reflecting that.

So why don't you take a step back and write a subjective review based on your one visit?

Alex Bradford, the reviews are not "generally" negative, it just so happens that the negative reviewers have gone into "chapter and verse". Fair enough, that's up to them. However, Vinnies comments are completely over the top and un-constructive. There are no details to his review, so can we assume he has even been in the Boathouse himself?

And for that matter have you? If not, you are being slightly hypocritical since you seem to be an advocate of, in your own words, "genuine reviews'.

The Lansdowne, Dawlish

Tried this place for the first time last wednesday night for the champions league final. There are screens everywhere!!!! Even a rooftop garden.......with a screen.... to cater for the smokers I guess.

First pint was a bombadier, only average to say the least so switched to lager for the (long) night. It was packed so it's hard to guess what it's like when there isn't a sporting event being screened.

Overall, not bad though, landlord very cheery and obliging, and a good night was had, us being neutrals...

Vinnie, if you read all the comments you will see a number of positive reviews about the boathouse.
Whilst it's not the best, it's certainly not as bad as some people are making out.

I ate in there last friday with my family with no problems. It's normal pub fayre, it was served hot, arrived in good time, the order was accurate, the service was friendly, and overall it was good value. Decent selection of beer, I had cider incidently, just the thing for the boiling hot day it was. And there was a water bowl for the pooch. How any of that make this place a "diabolical hole" I don't know.

So to sum up.... If you don't like it in there, don't use it....simple. Don't run it down for the sake of it, people are trying to make a living.

Reeds Arms, Burnham On Sea

Does the job, nothing special, but mega good value if you want a cheap decent meal out with the family. Saying that, the 99p IPA, which was not bad by the way, is the reason all the other pubs in Burnham are empty. However, I'm not sure you can blame them for trying to drum up business in a seaside town!!

The Dunstan House Inn, Burnham on Sea

In here for a wake about a month ago. Beer, food and service were first class. Never been in before, but would recommend it after one visit. My first pint of Tribute was particularly welcome. Locals were friendly too, which makes a change from some of the other pubs around here. Thanks for making us all welcome.

The Tottenham, Soho

Spent a very pleasant two and a half hours in here on Saturday afternoon before a gig at the Astoria. The interior at the Tottenham is visually stunning, tiled walls and a highly decorated ceiling with brass and glass chandeliers.

There appeared to be at least 5 ales on, including Hobgoblin and Timothy Talyors, quality seemed ok to me...... The locals appeared friendly, and the usual visitors having a pint before heading off to a show. Prices were reasonable considering this was Oxford Street, and the barstaff were friendly which seems to be a rarity at the moment.

All in all, a good place to head to if you are in the vicinity. Incidentally, why oh why are they knocking the Astoria down. It's a top venue, and a piece of history, shame indeed.

The Plough, Oldbury

Have tried the Plough again, and to be honest, i don't know what to make of it.
Good points, it's clean, and the food looks and smells awesome, even though I didn't try it..

But, there were only about ten people in there, round the telly watching the football, for some reason on a foreign language station. The place used to be packed every night after nine, but it was dead. And unfortunately, the beer was hopeless. Even the lager was flat!! Try again next week maybe, but perhaps the poor beer is the reason the place is empty.

Bar Essential, Aberystwyth

Has now been rebranded as "Salt", still a Brains house, but all up-market and trendy. Went in for lunch last friday, and basically it was hopeless.
Service was at a snails pace, food was grossly overpriced for what it was, I mean, nearly 12 for a cold and very average steak with chips and a couple of vine tomatos, atmosphere was morgue-like, and the air temperature was about -2 degrees. Brains bitter was the only redeeming factor...

Don't know what it's like on a night, but don't bother for food on a lunchtime, there are far better options eleswhere in Aber'.

Yates's, Cardiff

Went in a couple of weeks ago whilst visiting an event at the millenium stadium.
Doesn't serve ale, but we went in and enquired about food! It was the only place we had been in where the wait was less than an hour. To be fair, the food was ok and the service was quick and the bar staff pleasant. Risked a couple of lagers and at least it was cold and wet.
Shame it's so average though considering it's location next to the stadium. Toilets were sort of clean, but there were no bins for paper towels which were consequently dropped all over the floor......

The Plough, Oldbury

oh well, thats what you get for listening to gossip whilst p****d!! haha
i've been in a couple of times since it's re-opened and at least it's clean now!!!!!

The George, Oldbury

currently being re-furbed into a harvester. But to be honest, anything is better than the dump it was before!!!!!!! will post a rating when it opens.....

The Plough, Oldbury

This pub has been sold and is currently under apparent renovation. for some reason rather than getting on with the interior and re-opening, the new owners have dug up a huge tract of land ajacent with a jcb, and cut down a load of beautiful trees. It does not look good for this pub which is in the heart of a local community and has real potential. don't you hate it when people p**s about with your local. Watch this space!!!!!

The Sun Burnt Arms, Dawlish Warren

Oh my God!!!! Don't bother, it's a dump but it could be brilliant. It's in a great spot next to access to the beach and funfair, but is just so run down and un-appealing. We had one pint and left. The beer was sh**e to. Legged it to Lee's Bar sharpish.

The Boathouse Tavern and Grill, Dawlish Warren

Whilst this place isn't brilliant, i didn't find it as bad as some of the reviews below. we had a few drinks in here whilst on holiday and it was ok, service was prompt and the beer was above average. We had a meal for 14 on Wednesday evening, including 6 kids, and the food was normal pub fayre, came in good time and the staff were friendly. The 10oz steak offer was good value, and most of the adults took advantage of this, and got what they ordered which always helps. So i can only speak as i find, and i would go back and try it again. Oh yes, and we got up there with a wheelchair no problem.

The Beech Tree, Blackheath

Went in here couple of weeks ago after a funeral. Lunchtime drinkers seemed alright to me but hey, it was lunchtime. Nothing special, but i didn't have any problems like the previous poster!!!

Scruffy Murphy's, Birmingham

It's alright in here isn't it! Went in after a gig finished early at the academy on Tuesday. Cheap and cheerful, we had a good laugh for an hour, especially after being ripped off in the academy with warm carling sold at 3.05 a pint. Good mix of people too.

The Cobham Arms, Halesowen

Went back to this pub on saturday to watch the england game. Drank in the bar which was packed, and had a brief word with the licensees. They seemed fine to me, and had even done chip butties for half time. Beer was ok, locals were friendly so my opinion has risen somewhat. Was still there till about eightish, and it did thin out a bit, lounge was pretty empty. Overall, not a bad afternoon tho'.

The Cobham Arms, Halesowen

Agree with previous review. This place used to have the reputation for the best pint of banks in the area, and the car-park on sundays was rammed. Hadn't been in for ages till a few saturdays ago, and blimey, it was dead!!!!! I mean there were 5 people, including me in there!!!!! Beer wasn't too bad, but only average by any standard. Where did it all go wrong? Can't comment on the landlord because i didn't know who it was......

The Lighthouse, Halesowen

Not a bad pub at all, even if the decor is a bit odd. Beer was good, locals seemed pretty friendly. Strange nautical theme though for the black-country, i'm sure there is a story behind it some where. Anyway, it's ok for a evenings drinking! Does food, and i'm told it's quite good though i haven't tried it myself.

The White Hart, Cheddar

Went in August this year during a day-trip to cheddar. Had a nice pint, a good meal, a bowl of water for the dog, and some toys for the kids to play with whilst waiting for lunch. Service was good, and the ploughmans was above average. Think the ale was waddy's six x, very drinkable. We had parked miles up the hill so didn't have to worry about the parking. All in all, not bad by any means.

27 Sep 2006 13:39

The Plough, Oldbury

This is a pretty good pub, even if it could do with refurb. The beer is well kept, especially the bass, and there are usually one or two guest ales. Gets busy about 2130 hrs and its mostly locals. There's no jukebox, but cd's are played most nights by the landlord who's into rock music, but it's all pretty laid-back. Don't know about food. Can't speak for the bar as I usually drink in the lounge. There are occassional barbeques, and I think a quiz night. All in all, not bad.

27 Sep 2006 13:20

The Lifeboat, Thornham

This is really a great pub, good food, good beer and a cracking walk to the sea. Yes it does get busy, but hey most good pubs do, because they are popular. It follows. Just a quick point to other users, my children are not unruly, my dog doesn't run amok, and I don't bray!! I have been visiting this pub on and off for twenty years. Holiday makers contribute to the local community, pubs included. I'll be back down there in October. Please don't generalise.
