The Horse and Groom, Brighton

Now closed!

The Bevendean Hotel, Brighton

This has been reopened as a community pub, but unfortunately it seems that the same locals are still using it.
On entering I wondered if I was in a pub, with two comfortable settees at one end, or an Olde English Tea Rooms with that style of tables and chairs, all it needed, I thought, was table cloths, but then I looked to the right, and there they were, they are trying to be a pub, cafe, meeting room, library and goodnes knows what else, depending the time of the day,
Decent lighting, but the inevitable candle on each table, and that dreadful overloud musak, why do landlords think that customers like it?
Three real ales, two overhopped, and Harveys Best.
The staff are pleasant, and the Harveys was good.

The London Unity, Brighton

Now closed and boarded up, going to be changed into two flats.
That's what comes of employing rubish bar staff, no customers.

The Prince Albert, Brighton

Our first visit for a few years, only came as the monthly music session has moved here from the Lord Nelson.
Not very impressed, dark, dreary, run down back street pub, with over loud head banging music, tried to get in upstairs, where we could still hear the music from downstairs, went back down, and out the front, where we were regailed by a busker who only knew three notes.
We left after quickly finishing our drinks, which yet again were overhopped and undernourished, with a distinct lack of malt, and cost way over £4 a pint.
As I said in the beginning, our first visit for a few years, most certainly our last.

The Lord Nelson, Brighton

Looked in on the way past, going up to the Albert, where the monthly music session has moved.
Two people in the TV bar, only one the other side, very unlike normal, even the game players have gone.

The Walmer Castle, Kemptown

Popped in as I was supposed to be meeting a friend in there.
3 out of 4 pumps working, all with very pale yellowish liquid, very overhopped "Hophead" clones, all tasting exactly the same, no malt, just hops, one of the regulars said that they must all come out of the same barrel.
Struggled through most of a pint, then left as my friend had not turned up.

The Lord Nelson, Brighton

I gather from the net, that Graham is leaving.
Here's hoping that the next landlord/tenant keeps the beer as well, but drops those outrageous prices back down to those that are recommended by Harvey's.

The London Unity, Brighton

Well, that was very quick, yet another change of hands, no better than the last one, still "Up for Sale" notice outside, I wonder how much longer it can last.

The Druids Arms, Brighton

Seems to have gone downhill recently.
Most nights all you see is the two or three bar staff, and two bouncers, not one punter in sight.

The Bevendean Hotel, Brighton

Because of the behavour of the locals, this place has been closed for a long time now.
But now, the same locals are trying to raise money to turn it into a community pub, not much hope of that happening I would have thought, would not last long if it did open.

The Stag Inn, Brighton

This has now been closed and boarded up for quite a while, I do not think it will be reopened.

The Stanley Arms, Portslade

I use this pub occasionally, but I've found that the beer quality has gone down over the past few months.
Also, stay away on a Tueday, absolute dreadful open mike, over loud, out of tune pensioners, that can't even read their song sheets properly.

The Hanover, Brighton

When, oh when, are barstaff going to get over the idea that deafening music will make people drink more.
Four of us visited the pub, it was empty, and the music so loud that we had to point at the beers that we wanted, when we yelled at him to try to get it down, he replied that the customers liked it like that, the fact that we pointed at an empty pub was lost on him.,

The Pub With No Name, Brighton

Three very nice and friendly male barstaff, but one very rude female, treats the customers as if she is doing them a favour in taking your money, not very clever at pulling a full pint either, and out of the four, she seems to insist on having the "musak" far too loud.
I'll walk on by if I see that she is serving in the future.

The London Unity, Brighton

Changed hands yet again, beer quality even worse, I had the worst pint of Doombar I have ever tasted, two pumps already been taken out.
The new tenant, who does not seem to have a clue, and against everybodies advice apparently, insists that he is going to turn it into a wine bar, just what they need in that area, after all, the one in The Reservoir worked very well, for at least two weeks.

Mitre Tavern, Brighton

You can always get a good pint of Harvey's beer here, five pump working most of the time, all well kept.
All barstaff and customers very friendly and talkative.
Perhaps "Brainfluff" should remember how she behaved to cause the problem.

The Rose Hill Tavern, Brighton

No ale, I could only see two handpumps in the upper bar, both empty, unlike the last time I was there, I'm sure there was four in each bar back then, was told something about not much call for it, but I was offered a bottle of typical Asda or Coop ale which I refused of course.
Needless to say, wont be back.

The Reservoir, Brighton

I have now stopped using this place, they have a new barman that is so rude he makes the place unbearable, shame really as I used to like the place, never mind, there are plenty of others in this twin town of Brighton & Hove.

16 Jun 2013 12:35

Red Lion, Badlesmere

First time of visiting. not very impressed, only 3 out of 6 handpumps working, all with Hophead lookalikes on (very light, weak and grossly overhopped).
Advertised band did not turn up, no apology or explanation, just "Oh, they're not here"
Barmaid seemed to have problems understanding our orders, and both of them, plus the man at the bar I assumed to be the boss, totally ignored us when we said goodnight, be a long time before any of us return.

The Reservoir, Brighton

I visited this place after reading a good review in a newspaper article about the closing of The London Unity.
I was very pleasantly surprised, the last time I tried to use the place, it was a dying wine bar, but now has 5 different changing beers, out of a list of about 60, all served in their season sometime during the year, all under 3 pound a pint, and all in excellent condition, the barstaff very friendly and helpful, with competition like this, it's no wonder the Unity is closing.

The Greys, Brighton

I visited after reading a good review in an article about The London Unity, very disappointed, the place may have changed hands, but still just Harveys Best and Timothy Taylor Landlord, I had a very average Harveys Best, nowhere near the value of £3.40 I was charged.
And as for doing music again, with the mass of speakers stuck to the ceiling, I imagine that you will be able to hear it down on the level.
And how on earth does it get into The Good Beer Guide, with only the same two beers on?
Another pub off of my list.

The Geese Have Gone Over The Water, Brighton

I visited after reading a good review in an article about The London Unity, very disappointed, obviously just a foody pub now, if you can call a 6 inch pile of lettuce in a roll, with 6 or 7 chips food, the beer I had was a very strange tasting lager look alike at £3.60 for an O.G. of 3.8, I would think that the quality of the beer came second to the profit on the food.
Another pub off my list.

1 Feb 2013 13:15

The Duke Of Beaufort, Brighton

Perhaps the new landlord, below, can explain why there are no longer any real ales in the pub, as before he took it over, they sold well, with Camra visiting it on their Hanover pub crawls.

The Horse and Groom, Brighton

I popped in during the week, and I can only agree with bigglesworth's second posting, didn't even bother to wait for the only bloke in there to finish playing on his laptop, I reckon that he is pat popov, nobody else would put on a good review.
