For my money now Chorlton's best pub. They've extended their beer range - Timothy Taylor Landlord, Golden Best, Bass Bitter, Salamander and more guests. Great atmosphere, great people, great staff, dog friendly - it's a real proper local.

Black Swan Hotel, Ravenstonedale
Superb country pub with an emphasis on good food, with a cosy interior. On our visit over the bank holiday - it was bustling with a pleasant atmosphere. Really good efficient staff and dog friendly too. Didn't get chance to go in their beer garden, it looked really nice though. There's a little shop attached to the pub also. The beers were Black sheep bitter, black sheep ale, and a few guests, my favourite being Dent's golden fleece.
All the food was superior to what you usually get, with locally sourced meat & fish (the fish terrine was lovely, the lamb shank was superb.) One of my favourites for a while.

Great addition to the thriving Chorlton bar scene. Superb choice of 5 real ales (not the usual suspects) lots of decent quality lager, Staropramen, Krombacher and Warsteiner and even Franziskaner wheat beer. Great juke box, with unique selections from Manchester artists. They make fantastic cocktails as well. The team behind Manchester's greatest club after the Hacienda certainly know how to create a very good bar and they promote it well

I'd encourage anybody who used to enjoy the Beech in the past to give it another go, the new landlord is really trying to bring the pub back to its former glories, the older more unsavoury characters have left, and they have a decent selection of real ales, TT landlord, TT golden best and Copper Dragon.
Sat in the front room felt like the old days at the weekend.

Unfortunately 'hunt for beer' is wrong in what he says, concerning dogs in pubs.
It is the law that dogs are not permitted in 'food preparation areas' (ie kitchens) it is not illegal to have them in dining areas.
The best pubs let dogs in and this definitely isn't one of them.

Excellent pub.
Fine range of beers, on my visit there was Marble Manchester, Phoenix, Titanic (2 types including a rare mild) amongst many others. Unfortunately they didn't have Thornbridge beers on my visit, but otherwise spoilt for choice.
Food was fantastic, we had the sunday lunch. The interior is beautifully done and cosy. Staff lovely. Could not fault in any way - that's why they won best pub in Derbyshire.

Good luck to the new couple running this once great pub. They can't do any worse than the last jokers, and they seem to be trying hard to bring this pub back to its former glories. The TT landlord was on good form.

The Three Tuns, Bishops Castle
Probably one of the best brewery/gastro pubs in the country. They just about do everything right. Excellent and friendly staff, beautiful sensitive interior. Very good food (the steak is excellent) superb real ale brewed by themselves. Tried all the beers and they were all good, but prefered the weakest - the 1642

Nice convivial cosy atmosphere, good range of belgian beers on tap including 2 types of Maredsous as well as bottles (including the excellent Tripel Karmeliet)
A nice place to chill in the centre of London.
Staff could be a bit friendlier though.

Classic London Nicholsons pub - a listed building now.
We must have got lucky when we visited in the day, staff ok, beer TT landlord decent and not too expensive considering the area - food surprisingly decent - I had the steak and ale pie - a proper individual pie and not the puff pastry nonsense you get in so many places these days. We sat in the upstairs George Orwell bar with a view of soho below.

I really like this pub, in this pretty little village.
It's dog friendly, has got lots of little nooks and crannies, and has really good food. It was very busy at Sunday lunch because of this.
They have an extensive terrace by the river if the weather's fair.

This really is a very special pub. Beautifully decorated inside, with a gorgeous real fire, a large and sensitive cruck barn out back for large parties of diners. The ale selection is as good as you'll find round these parts. Look out for the 'Sue Ellen sat here' stool at the bar and photo of the actress who turned up some years back. Really nice and friendly locals and staff as well.
The food is not quite up to the higher prices demanded, but overall probably in my top 3 pubs of all time.

Excellent choice of Belgian and German beer in bottles, and a good selection of real ale. Friendly staff.
The interior is tired and shabby and in need of some updating though. There's tables outside the front and a terrace over the road. A very decent cyclists pub.

The Swan With Two Nicks, Little Bollington
A pretend gastro pub with high prices to match, pity they just serve terrible frozen food.
Good range of beers though including the excellent and local Dunham Massey.

The Screes Inn, Nether Wasdale
Still an excellent pub, with lovely staff - but the food isn't quite as good as it used to be.
Jill Unsworth's pies great and real proper pies of old have been replaced with the dreaded puff pastry effort you get in most pubs these days.
Please bring them back!

The Fox and Hounds, Starbotton
This pub has received poor reviews for a reason - the landlord - not because we're all 'whingers'.
I suggest Huntforbeer goes and tries all the hundreds of country pubs which serve food in this country - but where dogs are more than welcome (often in another part of the pub.)
Many of these are far superior to The Fox & hounds in Starbotton - an are doing better business because of this.

Places like this are few and far between these days, but we too often in this country have a rosy view of the past. This place has terrible customer service, a bad mannered landlord and ancient and slow beer dispensing - I fear the past we so often want to recreate in a rosy clich�d box- is unrealistic out of date and out of step, and not actually any good.

A nice alternative in Chorlton, a haven of real ale - and this place has a nice convivial atmosphere (so much better than the previous Polarbar) a good beer selection (both bottled and cask) and fairly decent food. DJ's play chilled out tunes at the weekends, plus regular bands.

This is one of my very favourite country pubs to take a trip out to.
A group of us took a slow train from Manchester stopping on the way at various pubs, with this as the last stop - it's right opposite the station and it's also near Delamere Forest.
We'd booked a large table, and from the off, the service we encountered was really fantastic; they really have it down to a fine art here, they were extremely efficient and friendly.
If only food in other pubs was this good - it is probably the best food I've had in any pub in the UK (and I've been to loads of 'gastro' pubs on my travels.) I had the lamb and it really was beautifully cooked - think modern British with panache but without pretension.
This is why it gets so busy at the weekends, when other places are struggling. (you'll need to book.)
The beer is superb as well - with some nice local beers to choose from, I'm a big fan of the Weetwood ales from Chester, they have the Best and the Eastgate as regulars as well as Deuchars IPA.
Go and visit and you'll see how good it is.

My great disappointment with the Horse & Jockey:
Despite my earlier review, I feel this pub is going down the wrong path, by not living by it's own principals, and trying to be everything to everyone, and becoming like every other bland corporate pub. It might as well be in Didsbury village (this is not a good thing.)
The music is still often too loud, the sky sports screen too obtrusive and always on - now they've started showing sports which they said they'd never do (there's plenty of other places that do this)
They often do have 2 or 3 bitters on, but this can be a gamble as they're never the same ones - there's no standard you can fall back on if you don't like the guests.
The food is still not up there with the best in Cheshire (this is the sort of pub that they're clearly basing their template on.)
I would say to the proprietors, if you have a spare afternoon take a trip out to The Goshawk in Mouldsworth, Cheshire and see how a great dining pub is run - the food is about 100 times better and it's around the same price.

The sad news is that the brewery has taken it back due to falling receipts and trouble. (December 09)
Hopefully somebody decent will be able to take on this once great boozer.

The Horse and Jockey, Chorlton cum Hardy
Mixed reviews for the new Horse & jockey I see below.
Now it's had time to settle in, here's my new review.
The good:
- They seem to have got rid of Landlord and IPA as regulars now they are not tied in to a brewery, and they often have 3 or 4 different real ales every time I go in which I really like.
The woman buying the real ale is extremely knowledgeable and used to work in The Bar. Now they have a request book for real ale, which is a great idea.
- All the staff in my experience are all really friendly and helpful.
- The interior - obviously a massive improvement.
The Bad
- The piped music. This drives me mad.
In a group of at least 10 of us - none of us like it. The problem is it's often too loud (though they will turn it down if asked.)
It seems to be for the benefit of the staff.
A pub like this is where you go to chat to your mates, not listen to a 10 year old dire Robbie Williams record.
- The giant screen. Ok so it doesn't play sky sports, but it's intrusive and you end up blankly looking at it if you're in that room. It is also totally against what the management set out to try and achieve with this pub.
- The food is still not quite right. If you look around you of an evening, there are often few people eating.
Despite a new chef which was a massive improvement (the fish & chips is super) unfortunately the other dishes do not represent good value for money (and the reputation has quickly gone around.)
In terms of food, it falls short of the kind of gastro pubs found in Cheshire which it clearly has been influenced by (in price as well.) I'm not a fan of the chips either (more like wedges.)
To conclude, still a massive improvement (and it is my local) but could still do better!

The Three Tuns, Bishops Castle
What more can I add to the other great reviews?
Nice and clean, modern interior, great choice of beers made on the premises. The food is some of the best gastro food we've ever tasted, all 3 courses were excellent. The staff professional friendly and efficient. All this and dog friendly in all areas of the pub (which is rare.) It really does not get much better than this!
Bishops Castle really is underrated and this pub is a gem.

Excellent gastro pub, the emphasis is on the superb food and accommodation - it's not cheap - but it's well worth it.
Interior modern and clean but cosy by the real fires - dog friendly as well. The ale was excellent an it was the local
British Inn of the Year and Wales Dining Pub of the Year.
If only other Welsh pubs were this good.

An excellent gastro pub (the chips here are superb), with prices to match on a pretty river with a waterwheel. Very busy on a Friday lunch time - but the staff coped admirably.
A very decent range of beers as well about 4/5 real ales too.
If only all Welsh pubs were this good!

Seen as being the poorest pub in the village and always seems to be quieter than the Blue Bell opposite.
However whilst the interior is tired an really dated, the beer - Timothy Taylor Best, Landlord and Golden Best was on top form.
On a sunny day there can be a no better place than on the decking at the back looking at the river. The food was ok.

This is a poor pub for one reason - the landlord.
He'll serve men always before women, he comes out with racist and sexist language. And he has dead foxes on his wall.
He really is a 'character' in the worst meaning of the word.
The food is massively expensive and is poor.
The soup was packet.
For some reason this country pub doesn't let dogs in.
The beer is ok.
Go to Kettlewell instead.

Just spent another happy weekend in Kettlewell, and I have to change my mark slightly.
I now think the Kings Head is the best pub in the village.
The Blue Bell, whilst still having the best food (marginally) is less of a 'local' and the staff can be patchy.
The Kings head is such a typical local pub with stone floors and a real fire.
I enjoyed the butter tubs beer again.

Just spent another happy weekend in Kettlewell, and I have to change my mark slightly.
I now think the Kings Arms is the best pub in the village.
The Blue bell, whilst still having the best food (marginally) is less of a 'local' and the staff can be patchy - from the lovely older lady bringing the food, to the downright rude (at times) younger bar staff - especially the younger larger girl.
The copper dragon beers are pretty decent though.

Has now been turned into a gastro pub and has become the sort of place Chorlton has desperately needed for many years. A great pub, serving great British classics in a pretty setting on the village green. The interior is smart, clean and modern. The beer well kept Landlord, Deuchars IPA and a good selection of guests - (I tried Moorhouse's Blond Witch) A microbrewery is to come. The staff are efficient and friendly. Even dog friendly in the pub area. The crowd, a mixture of Chorlton 30 somethings.
A massive improvement.
This pub could be a place you have a quiet drink, or a meal with your parents or a big night out with your mates - it has the capacity to be the pub that this area has really needed for years.

I was expecting a quiet 'old mans' pub, what I got on a Friday night was a small, vibrant, though pleasingly scruffy city centre boozer. The client�le were a mix of trendy young things and locals. The beer was ok, a decent range of Robinsons and Cumbria way as a guest. Great to see the new owners rescue a good pub, that's not a chain and not too sanitized. The room with the piano is still there (smells of damp) the other back room is being worked on I believe.

Our party of 16 (and 4 dogs) spent 3 happy days here over the recent sunny bank holiday. It's a nice friendly local in this pretty little Swaledale village, and only 10 mins walk from our campsite at Usher Gap. Popular with walkers and locals.
There is well kept Theakston's Best, Black sheep bitter, Black Sheep ale & Old Peculiar, but in the main we drank the superior local brews, first Muker silver, then when that ran out Lundsdale (?) bitter. The food is ok pub food, (the ploughmans is popular)

The pub is for locals and has character.
But why were we told on Friday - 'no dogs allowed' as soon as we entered? A country pub where you can't take your dog - (in at least one room) seemed very strange to me.
Especially as it's not exactly newly decorated and posh inside.
I would have thought they'd have welcomed the custom as I'm sure there are plenty of dog walkers who would go there as part of the walk on the canal
Very disappointed.

I am moved to comment again - after a bad case of the runs following a meal there on Friday. This pub has pretentions at being a gastro pub, but the menu is way too large for all the food to be fresh - and the food just isn't up to it.
It seems to be run by the cast of Hollyoaks, and it feels like a chain. They had no Dunham Massey beer when I went which was disappointing.
That said there are much worse places to be than with your dog next to the fire in the front room (much cosier than the back.)
Much room for improvement needed though

Have to disagree with the last review, went again last weekend, and it was as good as I remembered.
Excellent beer choice - I had the superb and local Eastgate ale from Weetwood - there was also a Thwaites Original and another guest (that wasn't one of usual suspects.)
The food is really excellent, we were spoilt for choice on the imaginative menu. Things like Rabbit pie and Steamed leek and Beeston cheshire cheese pudding put it way above average pub food.
The staff are all lovely and helpful - and the interior is cosy and well thought out. (nice real fires - though strangely was a bit chilly when we got there as it opened.)
There really is no pleasing some people, because despite being a chain (of sorts) for me this is how a country pub should be (and I've been to many disappointing ones.)
It is not cheap, but you pay for quality.

Nicest pub in Llandudno.
Warm in winter by the real fire and cosy lighting.
Attracts a crowd of older friendly locals.
Pretty good beer choice (Deuchars IPA, Abbott, Green King IPA) Dog friendly.
Now they're serving the full range of Pieminister Pies (and mash) which are delicious.

Despite positive recent reviews The Beech is very much a pub on it's downers - a shadow of its former self.
It still regularly runs out of beer (landlord & best), no guests and no gin - on my last visit - and this was not the only time
A pub without beer indeed!
Despite efforts at a much needed refurb - it's still sadly a poor and empty pub in every sense that needs a new landlord to get it back to it's former glories.

First impressions were great, lovely location next to a canal, and traditional interior. All the staff were friendly and helpful. (they even let our dog sneak in the entrance to the 'restaurant' carpeted area.)
I was a little disappointed with the beer choice - only 2 Robinsons ales were on and no guests. As they were not to my tastes, and there were no decent bottles, I had to drink Guinness.
The food was pretty good, above average for pub food, but my expectations were higher than was delivered. Not quite gastro pub or as good as the local Pheasant in Higher Burwardsley or the Dysart arms in Bunbury. All in all a decent boozer, but not necessarily one to make a special journey to (as we did.)

A very friendly local, full of friendly locals.
Our dogs were made welcome by the staff, and we enjoyed the food, a new basic and small menu but the chips were excellent, the pie was home made (none of this puff pastry nonsense.) The butter tubs real ale was fine too

A more miserable landlord you couldn't hope to find in Yorkshire (and that's saying something) As I entered he was moaning about the bank holiday trade, and saying (some what inappropriately) that if he had to employ foreigners he would shut completely. I should hope he takes his own advice. He could actually learn a thing or two from our Polish workers who work hard are always polite and helpful. He wouldn't do chips on their own, so we paid �4.95 for a tiny sandwich (chips are extra). The landlord beer was decent though.
It's awful that pubs are shutting down these days, but hopefully the good places will survive - this I fear is not one of them!

I really wanted to give this place a good review. I went back after a few years, after a long walk in the hills turned up at 3.10 on bank holiday Sunday. We got an abrupt "We're shut!" Several people were rudely turned away - not for any licensing reasons, but because they always shut at that time on a Sunday!
I'm all for these places being kept just as they were, but some things have improved in our time, and that is customer service - which at this place is nil. It's as though they're doing you a by favour by opening at all!

Recently opened on the old site of the Beer House and just a stones throw from Manchester's best pub (the Marble) the real draw here is the chef - a certain Robert Owen Brown formerly of The Bridge,and Lounge 10 - and a legend in this city amongst foodies.
His cooking did not disappoint, generous helpings of rustic British food the way it should be done - deceptively simple yet delicious. Black pudding, rabbit and old school puddings are on the menu
The interior hasn't changed much since the old pub was shut down a few years ago and needs updating, and the service is settling in, so slow at times.
But the heart of a great pub is there.
We tried the local Dunham Massey Big Tree Bitter which was superb, and the wine list looked interesting and inexpensive. They also had a Belgian blonde beer on (that wasn't Leffe.)
We'll definitely return.

Nicely located on a pretty village green.
Superb food with all the meat from their own farm - so it's local and extremely good.
There's a deli within the pub.
Beer well kept, friendly helpful staff. (especially the ozzie fella)
Good atmosphere. Dog friendly as well

The new landlord was giving it a go, but unfortunately keeps running out of proper beer on my last few visits
This doesn't affect the football shirts that frequent this very average boozer (they drink carling or magners)

Favoured by walkers and the 'Cheshire set' (on my visit) ,don't let this put you off though as it's a great pub.
Nicely located at the top of a hill with superb views.
The real ale from Weetwood was very well kept - they had 3 types WA, Eastgate and Old Dog.
The food though not the cheapest was well worth it.
If only all country pubs were this good

To reply to the rant below from the owners:
Again I repeat it's extremely bad form for a proper pub to charge for tap water. I have never seen it in all my years visiting pubs
The vast majority of restaurants will not charge for it either - as long as you are buying their drinks as well (I wouldn't dream of just asking for water and not buying a round)
This is called good customer service. Often places that have a good reputation and service will flourish, whilst places like yours will be struggling.
There is of course a problem with pubs surviving, and the appearance of the chains everywhere. I for one always try and support freehouses - but not if they don't give good customer service.
I review on this site often, and most of my reviews are positive. I was researching pubs in this area as we are due to visit relatives soon.

Very nice bar area, modern but cosy (real fires)
Superb food. Their lamb shank and fish and chips are excellent.
There are 3 Brains cask beers on offer, the best being Reverend James.

This is one of my favourite pubs ever. In a nice little village opposite a church, a warm welcome was given on our arrival. (including our dog) There are real fires
and the food is absolutely superb.
The beer was the local and excellent Eastgate Ale from Weetwood Ales (also Thwaites)
Pubs do not get much better than this!

If you love pubs, you probably won't love the Metropolitan. It's a giant newly renovated expensive impersonal chain pub for groups of young singles. They seem to drive from miles around to stand around gawping at each other (and you when you go in). Prices are worthy of London.
If you love pubs you're better off with the Railway over the road

Sister pub to the excellent 'The Bar' in Chorlton.
Best place in the vicinity by a long way. It does attract the deansgate crowd though. Brilliant beer choice both in bottles and real ale. Nice roof terrace in summer

Not one of Chorlton's better bars. The beer choice is poor - there is no real ale. The bottle choice is inferior to many pubs in the area too. The interior is cold and loud. They do decent food though.

I hope not. It's like going back in time - no real beer choice (a poor Boddingtons) - but friendly atmosphere. It's in great contrast to all the trendy bars that surround it

Fairly nice country pub. Food ok. They let dogs in the front area. Seems to get very busy especially in summer, as they have lots of tables outside. Beer ok - they do their own bitter
It feels like a chain pub - staff seem to be young. If you want more of a 'local' pub try the local and cheaper Vine

A great local. The staff were brilliant, they ran the place like a well oiled machine. Locals friendly. Beer good. Food adequate - it's certainly no gastro pub, but does grub to an old school standard - nice puddings with custard

The Wasdale Head Inn, Wasdale Head
Despite its amazing location this is a poor pub. However because it's the only pub for miles, it's always busy with hikers.
It does have a decent range of real ale but it feels like a chain pub. The bar staff are unfriendly and unhelpful. The food is extremely poor(anything they can get away with apparently)
Run without love, but as a money making exercise. Go to the local Santon Bridge Inn instead to see how a pub should be run

The Screes Inn, Nether Wasdale
Great pub for walkers and dog owners. Lots of little rooms. Extremely nice staff. Well kept beer (2 or 3 choices for real ale)
The food is very good pub food. Try the 2 pies if you're hungry! Jill Unsworths pies are amongst the best I've tried (and I've tried a lot!)
The goats cheese lattice is popular amongst my veggie friends.
Unusually they let dogs go in all areas of the pub. Close to being the perfect pub

Excellent cosy country pub. Nice ales. The food is pretty good. The lamb (sourced very locally) is superb
You're lucky if you can get a booth in the cosy main room nest to the fire.
Restaurant area not as nice. Dog friendly
Helpful staff, and friendly locals. Decent little campsite right next door

The Hillary Step, Whalley Range
Simply the best beer range in the area. Always changing range of several guest ales kept well.
2 types of Konig Weissbeer (fantastic German wheat beer) Nice range of bar snacks
Clean simple interior, if a bit clinical. It doesn't have that cosy feeling a pub should as it's often too bright.
Nice seating area outside
Friendly helpful staff

One of Chorltons original bars and still one of the best
Great beer range - marble and some guests. Erdinger and Krombacher on tap. Big range of Belgian/German bottles
Excellent pub food (inexpensive for Chorlton)
Friendly staff. The only downside is it's hard to get a seat as it's always popular
Friendly crowd - a refreshing lack of football shirts

Excellent pub for real beer lovers. Massive range of ever changing beer on tap and a huge range of bottles. Real roaring fires
Fantastic food (the lamb was first rate) Staff friendly and helpful
Only marked down 1 under 10, as dog owners have to go in the snooker/TV room which is nowhere near as cosy as the other rooms

Not bad. New landlord is giving real ale a go. Miles better than the sadly going downhill Beech over the road
Always busy. They have massive screens for the footy (not a good thing in my view)

The Marble Beer House, Chorlton cum Hardy
Best Pub in Chorlton. It's always busy, even on a week night early doors. Interior nicely scruffy
Fantastic real ale (big range of Marble and a few guests)
Decent range of bottles - Belgian favourites Chimay, Duvel etc)
They're even dog friendly

The Horse and Jockey, Chorlton cum Hardy
Recently has a new landlady, so there maybe some hope.
There have been rumours of it being ok again
However it has recently been one of the worst pubs in Chorlton by a mile
Great location and setting (on Chorlton Green) can't save the tired interior and dreadful toilets (always an inch of 'water' in the mens)
Can get quite rough especially in summer when drunken youths drinking magner congregate on the green.
The old landlord was apparently stabbed
Approach with caution

The Beech Inn, Chorlton cum Hardy
Gone massively downhill since new owners have taken over. There is a regular motley crew of smokers outside - giving it an air of aggressiveness
Regularly runs out of proper beer. Interior (ripped seats etc) sad and dilapidated
Avoid at all costs

I would have liked to visit & stay at this pub this summer.
But after the negative comments of 'tap_water' below (presumably from the owners) I wouldn't give them my money.
It's extremely bad form to charge for tap water, I've never heard of a pub doing it. (Occasionally restaurants do)
I often get a pint of water with a round of beers, to keep hydrated and stave off that hangover.I urge everyone to boycott this pub and over turn this mean minded policy

The Parlour, Chorlton
I nominated this pub & restaurant because I'm a fan. They normally have several real ales on. Last time I went in I drank the superb Red Willow Wreckless. They also had another red willow beer, Moorhouse's Black Cat and a few others. Very good food also, the fish & chips is great, as is their sunday dinner
