The Refreshers, Norwich

A mate used to work at the council offices opposite and every Tuesday afternoon they'd wait for the shouts and lean out of the window to watch the weekly ruck on the pavement outside Refreshers. Not sure why this place exists; given the location it could be one of the best pubs in town, what a waste.

Henry's Bar and Cafe, Norwich

Terrible, unless you like paying 4 to get your tasteless ice cold lager in a fancy frosted glass. I also disagree with the higher class of drinker comment. Bring back the Lamb!

Bell Hotel, Norwich

You get what you pay for so have no reason for complaint. Its dirty, often smells of sick, the food is rubbish and is generally too packed; but you can easily get change from a tenner when buying a round for five, you can get a filling meal for four quid and here is never any trouble.

Champion, Norwich

I once voted for the Champion for Norwich pub of the year. Declined slightly since the old landlord left and Bateman's took over, but still one of the better boozers in the city centre area. Mix of drinkers but always friendly. Well worth stopping off at, but for a lengthy session I'd move on to the Coachmakers, Trafford or KIngs Arms.

Trafford Arms, Norwich

An ale drinker's heaven and close to the city centre too, just brilliant.

The Coachmakers Arms, Norwich

A proper pub, which sadly is a rarity in Norwich city centre these days. Good selection of ales including many from Norfolk, nice garden and heated covered courtyard, dart board, well priced traditional food (healthy portion of bangers and mash for a fiver etc, no balsamic vinegar or garnishes of fresh dill to be seen) and a large screen which is pulled down for big matches only, no excessively loud music, and few tracksuit/baseball cap wearers present. More pubs should be like the Coachmakers.

The Alexandra Tavern, Norwich

Cracking boozer; good selection of well kept ale, usually busy with a nice crowd of customers (locals as well as students, unlike many of the other pubs round there), just a few years from Norwich's best chippy. Easily the second best pub in the Earlham Road / Dereham Road area, after the Fat Cat.

Mad Moose, Norwich

If you're a lager-loving student with too much money, too much hair gel and like staring at a video screen instead of talking to your mates then go to the Mad Moose. If you're not, then don't.

The shame is that this could be a brilliant pub given its building, garden and position; the only remotely plus point now is that when the name was changed in 1995 it was going to be called Beastie O'Shaggs, but they opted for the Mad Moose at the last minute. Bring back the Warwick Arms!

The Unthank Arms, Norwich

I've been in here many times over the last ten years or so and have been increasingly dissapointed every time. The ale is rubbish, the punters in the main (inaccurately) think they're trendy and/or hard and have a corresponding bad attitude, the ale is rubbish and well over-priced. The restaurant upstairs used to be ok but has become increasingly poncey, last time I went my meat (liver) was so bitter that I complained about food for possibly the first time ever; they refused to even try it and it took me a while to pursuade them that I wasn't paying for it, no apology. I haven't eaten there since. Its a shame; the location is great, the garden is huge and the interior is quite nice with big windows, like an old fashioned London pub. A poor 4/10, could do much better.

The Beehive, Norwich

Great little local boozer tucked away in one of the nicest corners of Norwich. Superb selection of ales at affordable prices (they usually have 4 or 5 on, which never dissapoint), dart board (all too rare in pubs these days, especially decent ones) and a beer garden. Even the dirty trough in the gents has a certain charm. The old landlord opened early on the day of my wedding for me and some mates to have a few drinks, that's the sort of pub it is, I'm pretty sure the new landlady would do the same; its a very friendly and accomodating place. Not sure why its unknown to most people from other parts of the city, but its probably best kept that way.

Eaton Cottage, Norwich

The Eaton Cottage is a brilliant pub, I'm glad that I live within a ten minute walk of it. The ale is excellent (especially the straw dog) and relatively affordable compared to some other pubs nearby, it has two nice outside seating areas and the clientele provide a good atmosphere (nice mix of locals and students, unlike many other pubs in NR2 which cater mainly for students and their tastes - i.e. loud video juke boxes, expensive ice cold designer drinks and tasteless food). Occasional good live bands and screens for football which don't make the place look like a ghastly 'sports bar'. They even do stones ginger wine for about 1.10, which is a nice warmer before heading home on winters nights.
