The Gladstone Arms, Borough

I was there last night for the music, and in contrast to many of the London music pubs I've been to this one not only had bitter on tap, but it was decent beer (I had the Tribute), well kept and reasonably priced for London at 3.20 per pint (in a mug as well, which is a novelty these days) - about the same price as a smaller bottle of inferior lager at the University of East London bar!

The pies looked rather appetising, but not having been there before I'd eaten a big meal beforehand. I'll be partaking next time I'm in the area!

The place was packed, and one of the bar staff was a little too eager to clear up empties, but other than the staff were good.

Music wise the acoustics are good, but they could do with turning up the lights on the bands a bit more - the candles on the windowsill were brighter during the support act's set!

The only real downside was that I got a powerful whiff of disinfectant every time the door to the gents was opened, which would be quite off-putting if I were eating.

The Globe Inn, Lostwithiel

I cannot rate this pub highly enough.
I went there with my grandmother on Friday night and had a fabulous meal in the restaurant followed by a nice drink in the bar. The range of beers looked good (although I was drinking wine and didn't sample any), and the price of both food and drink was very good. The staff and regulars were all very friendly and welcoming.

On Sunday evening we returned and had another, equally good meal in the restaurant, and were remembered and greeted warmly by the waiter - which is always a good sign. Following the meal we again went to the bar, but as Sunday night is quiz night it was standing room only. Despite this my grandmother was offered a seat and we were invited to join a team if we wished (alas we couldn't stay long enough).

If you are in the area then this pub is definitely worth a visit. I'd recommend booking if you want to guarantee a table in the restaurant - by 8:30 on the Sunday evening it was full.

The Dunstan House Inn, Burnham on Sea

Had a nice meal in here this lunchtime, although the service was slow and perhaps a touch unwelcoming.

The daily specials were varied, but the main menu was limited, particularly with only two options marked as being available in children's portions (fish and chips and sausage and mash I think), and only about three pudding options.
When it arrived the steak and ale pie was very tasty and quite filling, but the presentation made it look very small.

My pint of Tribute was well kept, but my grandfather's Courage Best Smooth was not in such good condition.

The dcor made the pub quite dark, despite large windows.

Overall, not the best pub in the area but not the worse either (there is a Hungry Horse just down the road for example).

The Queens Arms, Bleadon

A fabulous establishment this - gorgeous food, well kept ales, welcoming friendly staff and a very interesting old building (16th Century in parts I think).
The desert selection was limited - on my visit there were just three choices, although the wide variety of main courses couldn't be faltered.

There isn't much of a garden as far as I could tell, this being given over to a small, tight car park, but there is an outside patio area at the back and picnic tables out at the front (my visit coincided with a rainstorm so I didn't spend any time exploring these!). The ladies is right next to the bar, but the gents is located in an outbuilding, so I wouldn't recommend it for a boozeup on a cold, wet winters night.

Overall though this scores an excellent 8/10.

The White Hart, Cheddar

I'm going to completely disagree with onlyrealbeer as my experiences of this pub are the exact opposite!

This is a pub that's full of atmosphere with welcoming local, good, friendly staff and decent beers that are well kept. The food is pub grub, so don't come here expecting an imaginative meal (the Riverside is the place for that), but for pub food it is well done and not bad value at that.

The car park is small, but this is a function of it's location at the bottom of the gorge among a cluster of old buildings all of which have been there since before the invention of the motor car.

Riverside Inn and Restaurant, Cheddar

The Riverside keeps going from strength to strength and is now by far the best food pub in Cheddar (sadly the nearby Gardners Arms, that used to give it a run for its money, is going down hill).

The local ales served here are yet another reason to visit, if the food, location (large beer garden next to the river) and friendly service aren't enough for you.

The Windsor Castle, Weston Super Mare

Nice staff, nice food, nice beers and all at nice prices. That they continue to serve until 2:30 is another plus point as the extra half hour (compared to many places) means a late lunch needn't be hurried.

On a nice day the views across the Mendips from the dining area and beer garden are fabulous.

I'd recommend booking if you are coming to eat at a weekend, but during the week I've not had a problem getting a table.

City Arms, Wells

This pub has just about everything going for it -
* a nice atmosphere
* a building with a lot of history and character.
* very nice food in decent portion sizes
* decent ales
* decent prices

Quite possibly the best pub in the city of Wells.

The Hobbs Boat Inn, Bleadon

I agree with the review by fat_beer_badger.
Primarily an eating establishment, but with very friendly staff and usually at least two beers on tap (Butcombe and Wadworth are frequent) plus very good quality and value meals you can't really go wrong if this is what you are after.

The Fox and Goose Inn, Brent Knoll

I've had the pleasure of dining here on a few occasions and I've not been disappointed once by either the food or the beer.

It's not gourmet dining, but it doesn't try to be, but it's a much better place to eat than many pubs. Something that is only helped by the friendly staff.

The only thing to be wary of is the portion sizes - they range from big to enormous! On my most recent visit my grandfather was served the largest ham egg and chips I've ever seen!

It's location on the A38 less than 2 minutes from junction 22 of the M5 means that it is an ideal stopping point on a long journey, although it's capacity doesn't rival that of the service station just up the motorway the quality of the food and environment is several orders of magnitude greater.

The Two Brewers, Street

My grandparents and I had a very nice meal there yesterday, accompanied by (in my case) a nice pint of Tribute.

The pub has a very nice atmosphere and a wide selection of food and drink, so it comes highly recommended. The only thing is that there wasn't a huge choice of vegetarian dishes on the menu, although the specials made up for this I couldn't say whether this is normally the case or not (it was my first visit).

The Stag and Hounds, Churchill

Very nice building, obviously with a lot of history and a very wide selection of meals but unfortunately the service and quality of the food didn't live up to this first impression.
Firsty we went to the bar to order some drinks and were brusquely informed that food could only be purchased at the servery. Fair enough, but it does say this as you come in and so we already knew that and a "hello" or "how can I help" would have been nicer. Perhaps if they get a lot of people trying to order food at the bar they should make the servery more obvious (it's hidden away in a back corner) or put a note to this effect on the menus and on the bar as well as where you come in?
Two of our party of three had pints of Pedigree which were inexpertly poured and tasted a little flat. The white wine spritzer was reportedly very nice.
Then we went to the servery, where again the service was brusque = "table number?" was the greeting here.
The food arrived quickly, and in contrast to the review of the 4th of Jan it was hot (although not exceptionally so).
The main gripe I have was with the portion sizes - my grandfather received a moderately large fish and chips, my grandmother got a very large lasagne but my butternut squash curry was only about half the size of the other two meals. Also, the curry was disappointingly bland - the mango chutney had a much stronger flavour. The fish and chips was apparently "good, but nothing special" and the lasagne rated only a bit better.
The pudding I had, a toffee sponge with butterscotch sauce, was very nice - but I think you'd have to be going some to cock that up.
Overall 5/10.

Lantokay, Street

Not the best Wetherspoons but reasonably good for a lunchtime meal while shopping in Clarks Village.

The Old Inn, Hutton

The pub is a really nice building with friendly staff and good beer.

Up until a couple of weeks ago I would have strongly recommended it for food as well. However since then there has been a new menu introduced with significantly less choice. The quality of the meals today was very disappointing as well - smaller and of poorer quality than before.
