The Square Bottle, Chester

This pub has improved a lot over the last few weeks, thanks to the new manager(s). Customer service is noticably better with quicker bar service. Excellent beer quality and choice (usually 6 or 7 guest ales) and customers are encouraged to request their favourite beers. There is currently a 50p per pint discount for card-carrying Camra members. I shall continue to spend my beer allowance at this pub!

Sir Henry Segrave, Southport

Excellent selection of guest beers (although served a little too cold). Good service. I don't very often make positive comments about Wetherspoons pubs but this is one I'll definitely visit again.

The Guest House, Southport

One of the best pubs I've been in, and a superb selection of real ales.

Baron's Bar, Southport

Nice selection of real ales in good condition. I visited on Friday evening, and this was a good pub ruined by a noisy jukebox (on freeplay controlled by the bar manager).

The Plough Inn, Christleton

This pub is now listed in the 2007 Camra Good Beer Guide. As I've never been there I thought I'd give it a try. 6 or 7 real ales were on offer so I decided to try the local brews. I was not impressed with the Spitting Feathers Farmhouse Ale which had a nasty 'earthy' aftertaste, which I would associate with a dispense system which needed cleaning. Next I tried a Spitting Feathers Basket Case, which I've supped at other Chester pubs recently. I thought it tasted a bit 'green', maybe too fresh from the brewery, and distinctly average, which was disappointing for a 4.8% brew. When I drunk this elsewhere it was superb, one of my 'pints of the year'. Finally I tried the Spitting Feathers Old Wavertonian (stout), which was the best ale of the session and in top form.
This pub is a gem, very clean and the staff are A1.
Easily reached in ten minutes by the ChesterBus No.4 or No.41 service from Chester city centre. Try it!

The Mill Hotel, Chester

I agree with Chesterman - I've had enough of wall-to-wall Sky rubbish. Just switch on for the big events or when the customers request the TV, but to have 3 screens on all thje time, in one room - there's no escape!!!!!!!!!
Argghh!!
Pity because the beer range is the best for miles around. I still go in there but not as much as I used to.

The Ship and Mitre, Liverpool

As an occasional visitor to Liverpool I always make a bee-line for this pub as the beer choice and quality has always been top-notch. This week, however, it was mediocre. I had a pint of Station House 1st Lite (one of my favourite local brews) and it was warm and below average. Tried the other Station House beer, and it was also too warm. I noticed the other customers (all 4 of them) were drinking lager. Perhaps the cellar can't cope with the unusually hot weather. I usually stay in this pub 'till my wallet's empty, but not this time.

The previous review criticised the lack of food. The kitchen area is sheeted off and undergoing some redecoration.

The Albion Inn, Chester

Well worth a visit. I've lived in Chester for over 50 years and this is the best pub in the city - just read the reviews of this place in the national press. The meals are the best pub meals I've had, anywhere in the UK. The landlord knows his stuff and the beers are always in top condition. Highly recommended.

The Greyhound Inn, Saughall

Super village pub (one of three pubs in Saughall, John), great food, and the landlord cares about the beers (usually four ales, some from local breweries). Should be in the Good Beer Guide.

I've visited many Wetherspoons and many of them are very good ....... but this one is the pits. Even when there are only a handful of customers in there you have to wait for ages to be served, only to find the guest beer you selected is 'not on', even though the pumpclip is displayed. Always the poorest guest ale choice of any Wetherspoon pub. They know they don't need to try because it's located in a tourist spot, but most locals avoid this place like the plague. Fortunately, for discerning drinker, there are a few Good Beer Guide recommended pubs nearby. For the less discerning drinker there is a cheaper pub nearby.

Shropshire Arms, Chester

Currently serving the excellent local beers from Spitting Feathers, in superb condition!

The Grosvenor Arms Aldford, Aldford

Beer choice and quality = excellent
Bar ran out of ice at 9pm.
Bought three rounds of drinks (same drinks each time) and was charged 3 different prices.
Long wait between courses.
My rare roast beef was inedible, it was like trying to cut up and eat rubber bands.
I'll return for the beer, but not for food.
