The Briar Rose, Birmingham

Went here last week- was told we HAD to have a meal each as we had a teenager with us? Cynical or what ! Food was the usual Spoons portioned-controlled rubbish but the beer wasn't bad. Why does it need bouncers on a Sunday afternoon ??? Interior Ok service fine but NOT family friendly. Better than the Square Peg but there are so many better pubs nearby.

The Mill Hotel, Chester

An absolutely superb hotel bar which is attended to by efficient, friendly staff. Always has several ales on tap , and as other reviewers have said, the prices are very reasonable for a hotel. The food is very good and the bar meals are well priced. Lots of screens for sport but the volume isnt loud so you can chat easily. My only niggle is that it is pretty difficult to get somewhere to sit at weekend evenings but this is obviously a good sign . Strangely enough, the smoking area is the most picturesque part ! Chester centre is a 5 min walk along the canal -or 25 mins on the way back !

Boathouse, Chester

This used to be a super pub- now,on my recent visits we were served short measured, flat lager in a plastic glass. Next, some old woman barked that we couldnt eat or have anything else to drink as we had children with us (outside)and it was nearly 7pm (shock horror !!).Pub was fairly empty by this time so it is surprising they can afford to turn down business . To cap it all, was asked if i wanted 'some gear' when i went to the gents. Needless to say, unless you want plastic glasses,'gear' and have no children then this place should now be avoided.

The Duke, Sutton Coldfield

Can't believe how this place has gone down- it used to be a friendly backstreet pub. Now its half full of loud blokes giving bull about how much they supposedly earn or spend. This ,along with stupidly high prices for average beer and their habit of serving afore mentioned loud-mouths before anyone else gives an impression of a masonic lodge rather than a welcoming pub.The front room also smells of smoke. There are now quite a few better pubs in Sutton, which are also chav free but far more welcoming and where people drink (with genuinely high incomes) but chose to keep quiet about it.

Station, Sutton Coldfield

Pub has a good reputation- much depends on your age of course and what you really want on a night out. Many people are pretentious in there and Ive not heard so much false bragging (about wealth) for quite a while.Beer is very well kept but they have a horrible habit of serving their favourites rather than in turn. You get the feeling walking in that youve gatecrashed a Masons meeting but most punters are OK.

The Green Man, Middleton

This used to be a great pub with an excellent reputation.Bar staff and waiting staff were really friendly. however, on our last visit there was only one person serving(who served acquintances first), the tills were playing up and hardly any of the tables had been cleared.Needs a kick up its whatever!c

The Duke, Sutton Coldfield

Any pub which serves Steve Buet has got to be worth a shout. Anything else is superfluous.

The Vine, West Bromwich

A decent but over-hyped pub. Food is usually good although after a few beers is tastes even better. One or two nasty little tricks such as short beer measures and putting tape over the tops of the fruit machine reels makes you wonder about their real attitude towards clients especially baggies fans. Its probably due to poor competition that makes the pub so popular.

The Beehive Inn, Curdworth

Nice pub-friendly staff and the food varies between good and excellent, although sometimes there can be a long wait. However, they do like their locals so dont expect to get piority service and what ever you do dont go in the bar- yer not from round ere are you ?!!

The Bishop Vesey, Boldmere

Used to be Ok for real ale and decently priced food. Now its filthy and a typical spoons atmosphere prevails.Nice to have my friends card cloned aswell- from Boldmere to the far east in minutes- that takes some beating!!!

The Tap and Spile, Birmingham

Handy location but they dont like people having a laugh or a few drinks.Prefer to serve under-age kids than raucous over-age ones. Cant anyone speak either English or in a polite manner ? Beer decent enough.

The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham

Another excellent pub -its like the Birmingham buses- you wait around for an hour and then 2 come together. The Stock and the Wellington (out the back) are superb. The price of beer is high but with Fullers you really do get what you pay for. Only one gripe stops me giving this place 10/10- watch out for short measures when busy.To be fair, they do top up but it shouldnt be necessary.Nice to be able to now breathe in oxygen in there aswell.

The Wellington, Birmingham

This pub seriously would take some beating!! Beer range is superb as is the quality.Everyone over 20 but no dirty mac brigade either. Can be hard to find for first timers but well worth a visit. The barmaid had 3 heads by the time I left.
