The Angel, Soho

I know that a lot of people who put opinions on here are really into real ale and choice of drinks available. But as someone who likes to drink cheaply, I love Sam Smith pubs, and this one has a nice mix of people in it: regulars, old men, art students and workers.

The Spice of Life, Cambridge Circus

And did you know this pub makes a cameo in the film Sid and Nancy?

The Alexandra, Clapham

Never been at a weekend but on a week night, in winter, with candle light and the gothic windows, the often fairly empty upstairs is a good place to meet a few friends if you want to chat rather than stand in an overcrowded, loud Clapham pub. I can't speak for the downstairs.

The Sun, Clapham

I used to go sometimes about 8 years ago when it was a bit less 'Claphamy'. I think it must have been less crowded then because when I went for a drink last summer I had an awful time - is was uncomfortably packed with boring, uninteresting, braying city types.

Bread and Roses, Clapham

Considering it's socialist stylings, the drinks are too expensive and the clientele are mostly young proffesional rahs. Some people have used the word 'trendy' or 'hip' but most of them looked very 2004.

Bar Music Hall, Shoreditch

Yes, it is annoying to be denied entry somewhere. But the thing with places like Bar Music Hall, which hosts Computer Blue on a Friday and art disco Anti Social on a saturday is that they are trying to create and maintain a particular atmosphere. It does get busy later on and I think it's absolutely fine to expect people to make the effort in terms of their look (they love boys in make-up and gay girls in hoodies), especially in an area which is increasingly being infiltrated by boring city boys and gangs of beered up blokes from out of town. A lot of the people inside would probably be turned away from certain places for looking too freakish so if you don't care about these particular nights and don't know what they're called then there's a whole load of other places to visit in Shoreditch.
