please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Third and final pub of our crawl and my favourite. The place is small and was rammed on our visit, we managed to get stools at the bar. Wonderfully unspoilt and atmospheric place. We had the excellent Arabier here also.
If you visit one pub in Bruges, make it this one.

Ooh... my first international beerintheevening review. Having got the hang of looking through a menu to work out what beer to order from another pub, I put my new skills into action.

I thought I was being sophisticated by ordering a rare 10% fishing ale, adorned with spices for an extra kick. I didn't know that it was compulsory to pronounce it correctly though. The barman, who was also proud of his lack of Wi-Fi, wouldn't give it me until I got it right!

That's how serious they take their beer in this town and I am all for it. We were lucky to get the window table and try another couple from the menu - although Banana Beer is never going to cut it with me. Great place to listen to the international audience talking about how many steps there are in the Belfy and the locals to just ignore them and get on with practicing their vowels.

Superb.

Name that bar steppedup! (see below)

I've been in a fair few of the bars in Bruges and on my last visit I was inexorably drawn back here.

It hasn't got the biggest beer selection or the nicest toilets (if you're spending enough time in them to be able to form a strong opinion you are either suffering from a gastric complaint or a pervert) in town, but it just all works

I've not experienced a lack of atmosphere at all, just great beer and even better conversation. Look out for my new found chum, "Black Beauty" on his stool by the bar. One of the regulars; pony tail, facial hair and wicked sense of humour!

I could spend the all day in this place, so it's the only bar I've ever given a 10 on BITE.

As good as the previous reports say. Definately worth a visit when in Bruges
Rocky53 - 27 Mar 2013 17:35
Excellent selection of beers and a cosy place. Every table was occupied and all enjoying themselves thoroughly. Much better to drink in such as place, and many like it in Bruges, than in the nearby Markt.

Warning! CLOSED WEDNESDAYS!.
Paul_Rochdale - 9 Dec 2011 10:45
Daisy Claeys deserves a medal! Superb place, excellent beers, and the bread and cheese platter was just right. A gem of a place! An hour earlier I'd drank a Duvel at a bar in the Markt and was robbed of 5.50euros. The prices here were much more sensible.
Paul_Rochdale - 23 Sep 2011 19:27
My wife and I enjoyed a few in here just this last weekend 12.2.11 and it was great fun. With a bewildering 300 to choose from we took the advice of the waiter and he served up two fabulous ales. After dinner we returned and did the same and got two more , one 8% one 6%. The locals in here are really friendly and we can't wait to go back. However it can be very busy but don't be put off there is a back room. One word of caution, the loo's are apparently horrific!

Went here whilst in Bruges for my f*rtieth birthday celebrations. Cracking place. Excellent selection of beers on tap and in bottle and decked with in all manner of breweriana. Good service from the helpful staff. Recommend the De Dolle Export Stout (9%) - lovely!!
littledrummerboy - 10 Nov 2010 17:21
Spent an excellent afternoon here sampling as many of the 300 beers as we could - I would especially recommend the ? IPA - I can't remember the name, but it was 9% and it had a leprechaun on the front who looked like he was taking a dump. .

We only got there 20 minutes after it opened and it was already absolutely heaving and they only had two staff on for the first hour - so service was a bit slow but the atmosphere was great.

Was here last weekend, fabulous. Non smoking now, but that wasn't a problem - small , cosy and friendly. Daisy offered suggestions to my non beer drinking gf, and we stayed for 3 more. And came back the next day . Felt it was done for the love of beer rather than to make huge wads of cash. Best of the pubs I visited in Bruges.
UriGagarin - 13 Apr 2010 21:49
No smoking now. No atmosphere either.

Fortunately, there is a much better beer bar in Bruges.

This is one of our 3 favourite Bruges bars but can be difficult getting a seat. The bar area itself is usually crowded by locals chatting so if you want to see what is on the taps it can be difficult. It is such a cosy friendly place though, and has an excellent beer range. One of the few where you do get chatting with others, possibly due to tables being so close. Staff very friendly and helpful. One not to miss.
gillhalfpint - 11 Feb 2010 10:29
On a long weekend in Bruges, this was the second bar we made a beeline for after De Garre and this was no disappointment...nicely old-fashioned two rooms, VERY cosy with the people next to you or sharing your table, exceptionally friendly, courteous and knowledgeable staff, magnificent range of beers. Almost a throwback to inhale smoke in a bar again, although only a couple of people were indulging, so it wasn't at all a problem.
I have to laugh at all the sniffy "tourist" comments...if you're not a native of Bruges and you have made certain you visit this place, then you ARE a tourist in whatever light you choose to cast it...
Anyway, superb...

Only found this place around midnight on a Friday after a night in Cambrinus.
Still packed at midnight. Barman very helpful in recommending beer.

Very friendly, got talking to nice German couple at next table (it's pretty cosy) who were busy being very organised and taking notes on all the beers, we decided this was a brilliant idea (well it was midnight) but promptly forgot all about it the next day.

Smoking still allowed inside so you will reek of smoke.
Dan65 - 13 Nov 2009 11:13
After completing a touristy day we ended up here. This wasn't planned, it just happened to be the nearest of the 80 outlets featured in "Around B in 80 Beers".

Brilliant...OK it does get tourists, us, but the mix of locals and beer tourists was very friendly. Staff very knowledgable, fantsastic range of draught and bottles beers.

If you are in Brugge.....it is a must visit. Not too far from the Markt/Belltower.

Superb pub. Two rooms, waiter/waitress service, knowledgeable, helpful, courteous. Stunning beer list. Memorabilia adorning the walls. Quiet conversation, smbient classical music. Fascinating beer book. Try St. Bernadus, a worthy substitute for the Westvleteren. Also does a mean spaghetti bolognese! A brilliant place. One of the two essential pub visits in Bruges (with de Garre). Enjoy.
dableywolf - 25 Feb 2009 20:45
This is a great pub but best left until the evening as on several weekend afternoon visits it's had several elements of a children's playground and, even worse, I'm sure I saw people taking soft drinks. Nothing wrong with tourists but blimey, it's a pub! Anyway very friendly staff and I like the walls with the old style beer promo posters etc.
stevosgloriosus - 20 Jan 2009 09:29
This isn't that great a pub. I was in there at 19.30 on 29th December and it was full of non spending tourists with children. It felt nothing like a pub. Service was quite good though, from a bloke who calls himself Daisy!
chinakitty - 2 Jan 2009 13:52
WHY ISNT THIS IN THE TOP 40 NEY TOP 1

Welcoming pub definitely on the international "beer tourism" trail. Generates an eclectic mix of clientele on most nights, from locals to visitors from Europe and further afield. Recent visits of witnessed in-depth conversations of cigar smoking techniques, the American brewing industry and Welsh being spoken (between two Welsh nationals and a Belgian!). No two nights are ever totally the same.

A good range of beer is stocked, although if you're after the rare and obscure there are more specialist cafes in Belgium. Service is good, providing you allow for the fact that this place does get very busy - even out of the main tourist season. Fortunately the bar seems to be slightly outside of the main Bruges "tourist trail".

Food is minimal, being restricted to light snacks (cheese / meat / olives) only. However don't let this put you off one of the World's truly enchanting pub experiences.
aquadave - 21 Apr 2008 20:03
This is a bar that always lives up to its reputation. It copes brilliantly with everyone, from boorish boozers to beer virgins and never disappoints. Great place.
ericonabike - 16 Mar 2008 11:04
Fabulous bar, we always end up here every night on our trips to Bruges. Friendly helpful staff, brilliant range of beer. You will always end up talking to someone in here. Open until at least 2am normally although I don't think I've ever left because it's been closing. Normally have 5 0r 6 beers en vat, certainly had Zot, Hommelbier and t' Smisje Dubbel IPA on Saturday night.

Essential visit

GuideDogSaint - 3 Mar 2008 18:03
Great - very welcoming. Only marred by the boorish, foulmouthed euro-brit sat at the bar with the air-raid-siren gob. I hope someone shoved his ostentatiously large cigar where the son don't shine.
Albert_Campion - 27 Oct 2007 20:00
There is no better place to sample the many wonderful Belgium beers than this bar. The Landlady is very friendly and knowledgeable on the subject. Do not miss a visit if you are in Bruges. It opens at 4.00pm.
They still allow smoking although for me this was a disadvantage.
PeterTerry - 9 Oct 2007 22:50
brilliant gem of a pub
blackbob67 - 30 Sep 2007 20:06
A fabulous bar in an amazing city. It is a superb bar, if you only intend to visit one bar in the whole of Belgium, this must be it!
nigelrowe - 27 Sep 2007 10:16
The best pub in Brugges, but for a seat best to arrive at 4PM! Daisy looks after everyone and always
makes your visit a good one (A large selection of
Beers also helps!.
DougKing - 6 Sep 2007 11:36
great pub if there is a better one on the planet please let me know

a shrine to good drinking and good taste despite being in a tourist area. this is the pub to go to thanks daisy
littlecon - 15 Feb 2007 07:41
Best pub I've encountered on the European mainland. Great atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, superb range of Belgian beers although you have to be lucky to find the Westvleteren. Once you leave you'll always want to come back.
WeirdAl - 1 Nov 2006 15:04
The Beer Academy did not disappoint. Excellent staff, great selection of beers. A very good bar indeed. Worth noting its opening hours, which are 16:00 - 01:00, closed Wednesdays.
joegreen - 20 Sep 2006 16:38
Was in here last Saturday, on my second visit to Brugge. Liked the place even more than last time (when I rated it 10/10 but didn't review) - Daisy and her staff are fantastic, and the beer selection fantastic. Discovered a few real gems. Attracts lots of locals and lots of tourists, but despite being packed to the gills most of the time it is comfortable and the atmosphere fantastic.
anonymous - 3 Sep 2006 17:27
Made a flying visit to the Beertje yesterday. It was opening time and busy immediately but Daisy and the staff still made time to have a chat. The second Brugge bar that is hard to fault.
delirium - 29 Apr 2006 10:56
This is my favourite pub anywhere ,brilliant selection of belgian beer, great atmosphere ,if only one pub allowed to survive this would be it for me
cantillonrose - 27 Apr 2006 14:34
Been making regular pilgrimages here for the last 11 years and it never fails (unless a large group of tourists have turned up) to impress.

It is, without doubt, one of the best drinking establishments in the known world.
DaveT - 25 Apr 2006 13:27
Very small bar with excellent staff. Until that damn American website told everyone that Westvleteren 12 was the best beer in the world it was an almost guaranteed outlet for the stuff!. Difficult to fault Gollem.
delirium - 15 Feb 2006 01:00
200+ Belgian Beers, Vivaldi playing in the background, polite attentive barstaff, Daisy in attendance...and to quote, 'a buzz of conversation'. Sheer heaven. Add to that we left at 0430hrs one morning, shortly after the staff taxi and were asked to 'put the latch on'.Well we had a flight to catch! I cannot think of a better bar, anywhere.
delirium - 15 Feb 2006 00:16

10 vaniut 10 - uitstekend!

Probeer "De Hobbit" for en goede maltijd voor een redelijke preis - Specialiteiten, "Ribbetjes a volonte".

5thearlofwimbourne - 14 Feb 2006 15:46
Oh and by the way it is surprisingly cheap - we were in here for ages and had about five different bottled beers each - bill came to less than 25 euros. Very good value, particularly when you are used to paying through the nose at Belgian bars like the Dovetail in London.
anonymous - 17 Jan 2006 14:44
Had a great time when I went to Brugge. Make sure you arrive on the dot at 4 (when it opens) if you want a good sesh as it gets packed almost immediately. Serves the best range of beers in Bruges I am told - certainly enough to satisfy anyone's curiosity. Quite basic but because it is such a magnet for beer tourists you get lots of characters in there. Good service as you'd expect.

Not to be missed.

I've fallen out of this place more times than I care to remember - Great atmosphere, friendly, helpful staff who mug your wallet with the utmost cilvility - Must go back there soon...
Phantom_Raspberry - 23 Oct 2005 16:53
I have to agree with the previous comments posted. I've been over to Bruges with friends on a number of occasions now (going again in a few weeks time) and we always make a bee line for t' beertje. It's one of the things I like about Belgian bars - the beer menu is so much bigger than the food menu.
jabe - 10 May 2005 22:20
Probably the best pub in the world - that I've been to anyway :) Mind boggling selection of beers, I honestly didn't know where to start, however the staff were very freindly and able to recommend something to suit your taste and mood. Great atmosphere definately want to visit again.
Sal - 15 Jun 2004 11:03
Fantastic pub in the middle of Bruges. A staggering 140+ bottled conditioned beers plus about 6 or 7 on draught.

This place is run by the inestimable Daisy who remembers you even if you are in dishguise (sic)!!

Make an effort and take a trip cross channel to get there!!
