The Marsham Arms, Chelmsford

Another pub gone for good and with it all its history. - Its criminal that yet another Tesco is allowed to bulldoze its way in, Chelmsford now has 4 Tesco's the Marsham Arms makes way for the 5th. Ridiculous.

Duke of Edinburgh, Shepherds Bush

This pub has just recently closed within the last month. Will upload a photo. Another London pub gone, and with that all its history. Lets hope that its re-opened again with some refurbishment that might keep it alive. But I suspect that it will be a Tesco Metro or something more hideous instead.

The Bay Horse, Chelmsford

Re-Opened.

Been a couple of times .Refurshed to a very high standard. If you expecting it to be anything close to the old Bay Horse then you will be very surprised. Its clearly now a gastro pub and less a drinking establishment (like it was well known for before) obviously a lot of money has been spent renovating and updating and it works well. Food was great too, there were 16 of us and everyone enjoyed their dishes. Staff were professional and friendly. Food was very reasonable priced (15 for 2 courses) great selection of wines too. There is also a very nice outdoor decking area now too. The strangest thing about this pub is the Fruit Machine that is still there next to the bar area, which look and feels out of place!

The Chequers Inn, Bressingham

We have now been twice since the Chequers has re-opened and would highly recommend you make a visit. Considering the pub has only been reopened for a relatively short time, it felt well established with friendly, professional staff who were tentative and knowledgeable at all times, its clearly a well-managed pub.

The refurbishment has been completed to a very high specification, clearly with the goal for long term custom. Even though its been completely re-built it still contains many of the original features which keep the original and traditional style with all the benefits of being modernised throughout.

The food on the menu was varied and interesting, with many of the dishes having their own personal twist on some favourites you might expect from a gastro pub. We thought the meal was very much value for money, especially as the quality of the food was of a high standard, everyone in our group enjoyed their meals. The sticky toffee pudding and the dessert sampler are two you must try.

We'll definitely be back again soon.

The Sun and 13 Cantons, Soho

simple Advice: Come out of here turn left and go to the Old Coffehouse. - Much much better pub.

The Old Coffee House, Soho

Great Pub, very friendly and efficient staff. Bar runs along 3/4 of the side of the pub. The difference is this pub understands that people dont want to have to wait at the bar for 20 minutes to get served so they have adequate number of staff to ensure that doesnt happen. it would be too hard to fit anymore behind the bar if they tried! Its small, but friendly and with a good atmosphere and decent beers served by people who know what they are doing. - Its a simple philosophy - Just like a London pub should be. Its a shame that other pubs in the area do not take note, but to be honest I dont care as long as the Coffeehouse stays the way it is. They also have screens up and always play sports, with the sound up for the big games. - Highly Reccommended.

The Freemasons Arms, Covent Garden

Great Pub - Was such a treat to know there are still London pubs that have decent service with English staff (Or very good English Staff). Fast efficient service, good atmosphere, good beer. I REALLY hope management of this pubs stays around as this is one of the best examples of how managing a pub should be.

The Anchor, Southwark

From the outside this pub looks very inviting...the image of a traditional London Pub, such a shame then that this establishment lacks any values of what a London pub should offer.

The layout and decor of The Anchor is its best asset, there are several bars split across various levels of the building, but thats where the interest stops. The staff are so badly trained and have absolutely no grasp of the English language. On one occasion it took me about 10 minutes to get the female bar staff member to understand that I wanted a "CIDER" not a "SIDE ORDER" as she kept pointing on the menu to me. It was truly laughable. Then I was told that if my mate wanted a Guinness then we would need to get up and go to the bar downstairs if thats what he wanted. The incompetence of staff is only occasionally hidden because of the fact that its full of tourists who are just as confused as any when knowing what they want.

Even when the pub was only a 1/3 full the bar staff do not understand the etiquette of service in order of when you arrived. This is done as we know by moving down the bar in sequential order and being observant of those who have waited longest (one of the traditions that makes British Pubs best known) but...not here.

Both male and female toilets are disgusting and absolutely reek, my girlfriend refused to use them it was that bad. This pub needs a complete shake up as the finger of all of these points squarely at the management, who are obviously incompetent.

Maybe its trying to do too much, with a fish and chip shop, 3 bars, a function room and separate restaurant also included in the mix which should be avoided too.

Such a shame as this pub could have potential to be such a winner, its in a fabulous location.

My only recommendation would be to visit this place in the summer so you can sit outside in the great terraced area overlooking the Thames, but dont expect fast, efficient service, decent beer and quality food all of which is what London pubs, including The Anchor on the Southbank are supposed to offer.
