very much a locals alehouse with a lived in feel to it. has a Joanna and a few other instruments and had four or five ales on. Had a dark brew which was very palatable. In proper working Shepperton as opposed to snotty Shepperton.

This is a real gem of a local pub, offering an ever-changing range of real ales and ciders (Hop Back Summer Lightning and Hogs Back TEA are the regulars) always served in great condition. A friendly atmosphere, traditional pub games (including bar billiards), and live music Friday and Saturday. And the food comes in packets. Best pub for miles!

At last. The 4th pub we've tried in Shepperton and I get a decent pint of ale. This is a fantastic place. They were doing so much right that the Kings Head and Anchor in Church Square were doing wrong. They weren't trying to compete with the Thames Court with its location and food. They niched themselves on real ale, community feel, traditional games and it just feels great. You want to stay there for hours. The details are a blackboard beer menu with 5 on, 4 coming soon and 2 trad ciders, all independents. The range on our visit went through from Golden to a stout. Marvellous. Oh and yes the place was heaving. Not rocket science is it?

Cracking local boozer, very friendly, had a great range of beers and my pint of Andwell IPA was just right.

We've been to this pub a few times now and although it has an excellent range of ales I'm afraid the ale is always served far too cold. The ale must be stored in the same part of the cellar as chilled lagers. So you can order a pint of Hopback Crop Circle (as we did last night) but you won't be able to taste it fully until it's reached room temperature. Sorry to be negative as this is otherwise an excellent establishment.

Still a nice friendly local with a good choice of locally-sourced beers. Last night, they had Hogsback Tea & England's Glory, Cottage Between the Posts, Binghams Brickworks Bitter & Hopback Summer Lightning. Brickworks was replaced with Space Hoppy, another Binghams ale, whilst we were there. Orchard Pig Dry & Medium were the 2 real ciders from the cellar. As usual, there are a fair few dogs. Watch out for flooding and overhanging trees in the car park.

North Surrey Camra Pub of the Year 2011. Great beer, great ambience, great music and a true community local.

Last night they had Summer Lightning and GFB, TEA, Cottage Jack And The Dragon and Andwell Resolute. Real cider and perry too. Lots of pump clips and old bottles around the bar. Worth seeking out.

Welcoming pub with the most impressive selection of ales in Shepperton, included a couple I'd never tried before. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Welcoming pub located up a side street in Shepperton. We paid a visit last Thursday afternoon and found 4 real ales on - Twickenham Winter Cheer, Hepworth Old Ale, Hop Back Summer Lightning & WJ King Jingle Juice. The ambience is nice and it was quite busy for the time of day. Dogs appear to be welcome. My only nagging complaint was the barmaid's lack of product awareness. When asked what ciders they served, we were only told about the standard fizzy keg and bottled varieties. Luckily, I'd been here before and knew that they usually had a Mr Whitehead's cider on. Sure enough, when the question was asked, she admitted they did have Mr Whitehead's Boxing Dog in the cellar. I'm always disappointed when bar staff fail to mention real ciders and perries, as unless they promote them, they will never catch on. Our visit had followed a Christmas party. So a few of us also fancied shots. When asked for sambuca, the barmaid said we don't sell sambuca, "we're a beer pub". I found this remark quite amusing. However she was surprised when we managed to point out the sambuca bottle behind the bar. The landlord himself seemed a bit more 'switched on'. Nevertheless, I'd still come back to this pub, as it's a comfortable place in which to while away a few hours.

A wonderful locals pub situated in a relatively quiet residential area that, despite being on few peoples road to anywhere, is well worth seeking out (my brother lives down the road which is the usual excuse for my occasional visit). 5 Ales, usually local (they are part of the LocAle scheme), with Summer Lightning and T.E.A. being the regulars supplemented by 3 guests (a Triple FFF brace of Moondance and Comfortably Numb as well as Hepworth Old Ale being last weekends selection). The landlord always gives me the impression he really cares for his beers and I have never had any reason to complain about the quality. The pub is usually busy even when you dont expect it which is always a good sign although one end of the pub is set out for diners during the day and if I have any complaints it is that I sometimes struggle to get a seat or table. There are plenty of displays, antiques, portraits, old style telephones, typewriters and collections of cigarette cards, bottles and pump clips. A small basic TV suggests that live Sport and the X Factor are not big priorities on the entertainment front however there is a bar billiards table that comes as a surprise. Music obviously plays a big part with a large music themed mural set across a couple of walls and a diet of piped 60s soul, blues and jazz that feels just right with the relaxed ambience during the day although there is a programme of live music ranging from jazz evenings to rock covers bands which may be a bit intrusive if you arent expecting it. The pub is very dog friendly with many slouched pooches evident every time I visit. For an off the beaten track locals pub, I would quite fancy it as mine!

Current North Surrey CAMRA Pub Of The Year 2007. Friendly local with 5 guest ales in excellent condition. food served Lunchtimes Monday to Friday none on Saturday and Sunday Lunch between 12pm and 3pm. Jazz nights on Wednesday when food is also availble though this is more hot snack based I believe. Music is also now on Friday and Saturday evening and this is of the Rock n Roll or Blues variety. Governor enjoys his pint of TEA which is the regular bitter. Note it is a good 15 minute walk from the rail station over the motorway though the 218 bus stops at the end of the road.

great beer and music and the food isn't bad either

Can I just say what a brilliant evening we had at the Barley Mow tonight..! The live jazz was terrific, John Barnes on the sax was particularly good. The band were brilliant too. I cannot praise the music highly enough. If you're a fan of jazz, or even if you just like good music, get along to the Barley Mow on a Wednesday evening (8.30pm onwards) and have yourself a treat! Live jazz, you just can't beat it!! Even the dog seemed to enjoy the sound! Ruff-ruff!! Well done, the Barley Mow management. A great evening! TJ

Good beer selection, 4/5 pumps incl Summer Lightning and Hogsback TEA when I visited at lunch but, whilst the latter was not quite rejectable it certainly was not in peak condition. They were serving plenty of it but others, incl someone I presumed to be the guv, seemed happy with it. The place was quite busy around 13:00 and noticeably a locals place, I liked the bouyant atmosphere and maybe I was unlucky with the beer but that doesn't mean I wasn't disappointed, especially in light of glowing comments attached.

A fantastic pub for the real ale enthusiast or traditional drinkers.

Five handpulls on the go last night (Sharp's IPA, Hepworths Old Ale (superb), Hop Back Entire Stout, Hogsback TEA and Summer Lightning...I think!!). Great to see a couple of dark beers on the go for the colder months.

Also boasts a fully-operational bar billiards table (no I don't understand the rules either) which was a cause of much excitement among my companions.

Brilliant, joint best pub in North Surrey (along with the Happy Man) at this point in time. An absolute must-visit.

good to hear the place is still good as ever! used to be a regular visitor and was visited often by john and jake at the pub i worked at. fantastic pub, great atmosphere, might've been a little smokey when i've been there. definately will be visiting again hopefully in the near future

Well this place just gets better and better. Don't you ever leave John!

Beers on last night were Cottage Deltic Diesel; Cottage Brunel Great Eastern; Grand Union Honey Porter (yum yum); W J Kings Bullion One Hop (beautifully hoppy) and Hogs Back TEA.
bobinman - 5 Dec 2006 09:31
The perfect pub; a wide and constantly changing range of beers and guest ales, a fireplace, a truly barmy legend of a landlord in John, generally friendly staff, and of course, a big black dog that eats crisps! Forget themed pubs and trendy wannabe-nightclub pubs, when you really want to put the world to rights and have a coupla pints with your mates the Barley Mow's the place to be. Been my local since year dot, and I'm just about to head off down there now!

Sampled the 'jazz night' on Wednesday, the pub was busy for a small place. The 'Tea' was nice, and the music was good, although I did not know any of the songs. Popular little place. The locals are lucky having this hostelry on their doorstep! TJ

Great pub, proper job!! Highly recommended.
wonderkind - 28 Aug 2006 15:13
No mistaking, this is the best boozer for miles! The long-haired guy behind the bar is the governor John - he came as a temporary relief from Kent about 5-6 years ago and stayed - top bloke. The jazz is usually excellent and of a modern jazz nature, though R'n'B (the real 50's and 60's type) can often be found here as well. The food is good (I'm led to believe) and the beer is always top-notch. Had two luvverly pints this afternoon - Hepworths Iron Horse and Archers Top Brass (very dark) and both 4.8%. His beers tend to be at the stronger end of the Richter scale.
bobinman - 25 Aug 2006 17:02
Nice little boozer! Hidden in the middle of a residential housing estate, I would never have known it was there if it wasn't for a well travelled friend.
Had a nice drink of TEA, went down well on a warm afternoon. Noticed they had 'Becks V'(4%) on tap, which is unusual. Also noticed an upright piano in the corner with jazz pictures & posters around it. Discovered the 'Barley Mow' has a jazz evening every Wednesday 8.30pm. This I must sample, now I know where it is! The bar itself was almost fully utilised and this was at 5.30pm suggesting most of the people were Sheppertonians, or they'd been there all day! Or both!! The guy managing behind the bar with long hair was good at his job (and I've seen a few bar staff!) and he wouldn't have looked out of place doing a concert with the Rolling Stones or Pink Floyd or somebody! The pub obviously has music connections. (No doubt somebody will enlighten me now..)! A good joint. I will revisit. TJ

Elysium by the reservoir in the early evening. Deceptively spacious, lots of atmosphere, friendly regulars, friendly dogs, gentle scratching of pens on crosswords, and, AND, Summer Lightning (gift of the Gods) in top form. Not a very scenic walk over the M3 from the shops (10-15 mins) but you can't have it all.
thirstybob - 30 Mar 2006 15:18
A gem! Excellent local pub with a wide range of beers, a varied clientle, friendly and efficient staff. When I visited at Sunday lunchtime the place was packed with people taking the Sunday lunch. Can't find a reason to vote for anything other than 10/10.

My only regret is that I've lived within 4 miles of this pub for over 25 years and have only just discovered it (due to BITE!). I will certainly be back.
slj - 20 Mar 2006 10:10
Good real ale pub with decent live music (no karaoke box + 1 guitar bands). Old fashioned landlord who treats his beer and his customers in a top class fashion. Only downside is poor ventilation.

Visited a couple of weeks ago. This is a truly splendid pub. Superb beer - Hogsback TEA, Hopback Summer Lightning and 3 others - it was all hazy at this point. Excellent live Jazz and music is on 3 nights a week. The pork scratchings were also of good quality. Cannot recommend highly enough. If only I didn't live 50 miles away.

One of the best pubs in this patr of Surrey - everyone is so friendly here. Do visit the pub. Food great. Live music.

I have just returned home from a thrilling session in this pub. I visited with a friend from London for the first time on Wed 15/06/05 and enjoyed a pint of Hogs Back TEA and a "Treacle Stout" both in very good condition.

Exquisite food accompanied the beer. You MUST try their Palm Oli fish stew - it is mouthwatering. The menu is full of exciting Caribbean dishes alongside a few English ones plus a good range of snacks and sandwiches. (Check first - food is only available 2 or 3 evenings a week).

All this was enjoyed all the more thanks to a fine, professional-sounding jazz band playing on Weds night. I must also add how friendly the staff AND the locals are in this pub. If I lived within 5 miles of Shepperton, I would make the Barley Mow my local without a doubt. I will certainly visit again - well worth the train ride from Waterloo in my opinion. Excellent - 10/10.

Know a band that played. No problems with booking. Landlord very friendly. Started doing good food.
cliveturner - 2 May 2005 19:17
A word of warning to bands who might be interested in playing this pub. They booked us twice for gigs which we confirmed by phone (and also the second time, in person). Each time when we called in to drop in some posters they had booked a "regular" band instead - and, to top it all, claimed that they had never heard of us and denied that they'd ever booked us. The cancellations were galling but barefaced lies on two occaisions... well...

We won't be taking any bookings from them again.

A very friendly local pub. Quiet, fantastic real ales you can't find anywhere and regular live music. Especially great for me as I live down the other end of the road!

If you like Real ale go to the Barley Mow, it must be good even the manager drinks it.
